A landmark in the history of the integration of the Jews in Dutch society: In Middelburg (Zealand) in 1832 for the first time a sermon in the synagogue was delivered in the Dutch language. Carillon was denied permission to preach in the Dutch in his own Amsterdam community where traditionally sermons were delivered in the Portuguese language. But in Middelburg he was given the chance to preach a sermon, earlier delivered in Amsterdam, now translated into Dutch. It was a highly pattriotic speech, published shortly afterwards.
