William Twopeny
Specimens of Ancient Wood-Work
London, Bradbury and Evans, 1859. First edition. Paperback. The first edition of this collection of etchings regarding ancient woodwork, by William Twopeny. Signed by him with a dedication to the front endpaper. An uncommon work. This work was published for private distribution among Twopeny's friends, and therefore all copies are signed. 'For The Earl of Ashburnham from Wm Twopeny' to the recto of front endpaper. With the bookplate of Michaelis Tomkinson, Franche Hall Worcestershire. Bertram Ashburnham was a British peer and a keen bibliophile. He amassed an important collection of books and manuscripts and is widely considered to be one of the great collectors of the nineteenth century. William Twopeny was an amateur antiquarian draughtsman and printmaker. He specialised in architectural subjects, and many of his drawings were given to the BM in 1874 by his son. To his introduction Twopeny notes that when he began attending to ancient architecture it was generally supposed 'that buy little wood-work prior to the fifteenth century existed&apos. This work demonstrates details of woodwork from earlier than this. He starts at the twelfth century for this particular work. Collated, complete with thirteen plates. Each plate has an accompanying leaf explaining the item, when it was created and more. A bright example of this work created to inform its readership of the history of woodwork. In a quarter cloth binding with contemporary boards. Repaired to the spine with tape. Externally, rubbed to the board edges and to the spine. Several marks to boards. Bookplate to the front pastedown for Michaelis Tomkinson of Franche Hall, Worcestershire. Author's inscription to the recto of front endpaper. Small split to the front hinge, which remains firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with occasional scattered spots to pages. Good . Ill.: William Twopeny. Good .

Presentation of Honorary Fellowship to Axel Leonard Wennergren by Meyer W Weisgal, Chairman of the Executive Council of the Weizmann Institute of Science.  This chapter has accompanying photographs of the event tipped in.II. Remarks by the Minister of Education and Culture, Mr Abba Eban, President of the Weizmann Institute of Science.III. Sponsor's Address by Professor Chaim Leib Pekeris, Head of the Department of Applied Mathematics at the Weizmann Institute of Science.IV. Lecture by Axel L Wenner-Gren - "A Layman's View of Scientific Research" V. A View of the Future by Axel L Wenner-Gren.This work discusses how science can help to change the world for the better and how technology has paved the way for people to deal with difficulties in an efficient and definite way. A major contributor to this work is Axel Wenner-Gren, who was one of the wealthiest men in the world during the 1930s. Loosely inserted is a letter from Wenner-Gren's wife addressed to Jeremy James, the adopted son of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie. Marguerite Wenner-Gren trained as a young opera singer in Berlin. News of her talents spread to Harald Andre at the Stockholm Opera who invited her to perform in Stockholm. She found great success and it was whilst performing here that she met Axel Wenner-Gren. Following her marriage she was known to be the host of elaborate parties and gatherings. The letter is addressed 'To the Long & Late Mr Jeremy James' to the envelope. The letter is written on paper from Laboratoriegatan 10, Stockholm. This is the address of the Tillbergska Villan, a property designed by the architect Ivar Tengbom for the district chief Knut Tillberg. The building was sold to Swedish financier Axel Wenner-Gren in 1925. Since 1993 the property has housed the South Korean Embassy. The letter reads 'To one of the nicest boys I've ever met! When the old 'knuckle head' knuckles down to work - and his frail body needs a little warm up - mind your P's & Q's and your penmanship & give a thought to your great great aunt&apos. From the library at Julians Park, the former home of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie (Audrey Evelyn James Coats, and Audrey Evelyn James Field). Pleydell-Bouverie was the youngest daughter of an Anglo-American lumber and steel millionaire. Audrey was also alleged to be the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII, although she was also rumoured to be his daugher, or the lover of King Edward VIII.  She bought Julians Park in 1940 following her third marriage to the Hon Peter Pleydell-Bouverie. Audrey was a patron of the arts and it is believed that she bound several books herself, as many books from her library were stamped with her name and she owned a group of bookbinding tools. Her circle of friends included Winston Churchill, Coco Chanel and Nancy Mitford. She was featured in Cecil Beaton's 'Book of Beauty' and was regarded as one of the Bright Young Things. In a full crushed morocco binding. With a slipcase. Externally, fine. Slipcase is also fine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Fine . Ill.: Not Stated. Fine .

 Various, Progressive Architecture
Various
Progressive Architecture
New York , Reinhold Publishing Co. 1950-73. Leather. A continuous 23 year run of selected sections from one of the 20th century's most significant architectural magazines, uniformly bound by Bayntun Riviere of Bath. The sections included from the magazine are those concerning the design of either real, planned, or hypothetical buildings. Sections such as the 'newsletter' or 'manufacturers' literature' are not included. Thus there is a streamlined focus on design content. The relevant sections from each month's magazine are bound together by year, with each volume running from January to December as one would expect. The pagination is truncated as a result: for most months the pagination will run from roughly 50-120. Thus there are twelve separately paginated sections in each volume, corresponding loosely to those figures. Replete with illustrations, both photographic and draughted. Colour photos become more frequent from the 1957 volume onwards. There is a general American focus, but the wider world is not neglected. Every imaginable sort of building is covered, from schools to hotels to offices and houses. Contemporary design is rigorously and intelligently discussed in the accompanying articles, which situate the featured buildings within their wider social and practical context. New materials and technology are explored, and ambitious theoretical designs are analysed. The architectural discussions, by their very nature, provide a fascinating angle on the wider cultural, economic, and political world of their particular year. For example, one will find the design and utility of bomb shelters discussed at the height of the cold war, and then 'omnibuildings' eagerly anticipated in the late 60s. In 1969 there is a feature titled 'Machine Art Past and Technology Art Present', while in 1970 the influence of modern technology on the design of movie theatres is explored. A beautifully bound unparallelled primary source for the history of architecture, as well as for socio-economic history, in the mid to late twentieth century. In half morocco by Bayntun Riviere. Externally excellent with just the occasional light mark to the boards. The 1955 volume has a small bookseller's stamp to the front pastedown. Internally, generally clean and bright, and firmly bound Fine . Ill.: Various. Fine .
