[COSTUMES FOR "WALZER AUS WIEN" / THEATERKUNST HERMANN J. KAUFMANN].
[A collection of 26 water colour drawings depicting costumes for the pasticcio "Walzer aud Wien"]. About 1930-6.
. Comprises 26 plates (26 x 22 cm) with 31 costume drawings painted in water colours with notes and numbers in pencil. The notes refer to the operetta characters and possibly Swedish artists who were famous at that time. A label "Theaterkunst Hermann J. Kaufmann" pasted on the reverse of the plates. Housed in a specially-made box.The pasticcio "Walzer aus Wien" arranged by Erich Wolfgang Korngold and with music by Johann Strauss (father and son) was first performed at the Vienna Stadttheater in 1930. The following year it was restaged in London as "Waltzes from Vienna" and a French version entitled "Valses de Vienne" was produced in Paris. The successful operetta was based on the rivalry between Strauss the elder and Strauss the younger. We have not been able to find any Swedish performance but this set of drawings listing Swedish artists indicates that such a plan existed, even if it was never implemented. We don't know who made the drawings but the Kaufmann labels suggest that they used to belong to them. Theaterkunst Hermann Kaufmann, founded in Berlin 1907, became the world's biggest costume house for theatre, opera, and later also film productions. In the 1930s the company expanded internationally but in 1936 Hermann Kaufmann had to sell it due to political pressure.

[SWEDISH RYA CARPET DESIGNS]., A pupil's work comprising 73 designs for rugs and furniture fabrics. No date or place, but Sweden, ca 1941.
[SWEDISH RYA CARPET DESIGNS].
A pupil's work comprising 73 designs for rugs and furniture fabrics. No date or place, but Sweden, ca 1941.
. A collection containing 73 beautiful designs, most of which are painted with water colours on paper, a few b/w printed, pasted on strong paper. The size of the designs varies but most are about 12-17 cm x 20-25 cm. The weaving designs are meant for carpets such as Rya, Rollakan (Röllakan) and Flossa. In addition, there are twenty designs for furniture fabrics including printed patterns of Damast (Damask) and Finnväv (double weave). Housed in a specially made decorated box (21.4 x 34.6 cm). Already in the fourteenth century Scandinavians had developed the art of Rya (or Ryijy). They were specially designed to help the Scandinavian people cope with their notoriously harsh winters. Ryas were made thick with shaggy long piles and mainly used as mantles or bedding rather than floor covering. By the 1880s traditional Scandinavian rugs, especially the thick-piled Ryas, were popular throughout northern Europe. Another type of flat-woven rug was also developed in Sweden, called Rollakan (Röllakan). It's a very distinct style of rug, which is thinner than the Ryas. Rya had been made with abstract, geometric designs for centuries and became hugely popular among modern designers by mid 20th century in Europe and North America. Sweden had several well-known rug designers during this period. Märtha Måås-Fjetterström, probably the most famous, was active between 1919 and 1941. We believe this set belonged to a student at a weaving school. She has copied patterns but also created her own designs, all made in a very delightful and artistic way. Two plates include "1941" in print which means we assume the designs were made around this time. In very good condition.

BOURNAZEL, DIANE DE / GUÉGANT, AMELIE (Bookbinder):, Le Chant des Possibles. Marliac (Limousin) France 2018.
BOURNAZEL, DIANE DE / GUÉGANT, AMELIE (Bookbinder):
Le Chant des Possibles. Marliac (Limousin) France 2018.
. An exquisite artist's book, a magical work without words, completely handmade. The beautiful binding is by Amelie Guégant. Narrow folio. (13.8 x 33.2 cm) Lvs. (8). Seven double-page illustrations, fully illuminated by hand, using water colour, ink and collage. The images have a window cut in centre and are surrounded by a zigzag border. One leaf with small crease at lower corner. Original sprinkled paper boards, blue on gold coloured paper, handwritten title labels, housed in matching slipcase. Diane Bournazel (born 1956) is a French painter, printmaker and book illustrator represented in both private and public collections in France and elsewhere. Her works contain mystical stories or wordless poetry with themes that include nature, human relations, life and death. She uses drawing, painting, paper cutting and collage. This work features imaginary animals, people, flowers, etc all floating in a dreamlike setting. The book can be read from front or back and the reader is encouraged to create their own imaginative story. As a book artist, Diane de Bournazel is among the very best in seeing the livre dÕartiste as a total artistic creation, embracing all the special qualities of the codex form. She creates distinct and mysterious narratives, spurring us on to turn the pages, with her trademark papercutting opening windows between them, encouraging us to look forwards, backwards and beneath the surface. Subtle collage effects and gauffered edges invite us to touch the pages and to reanimate the books each time we return to them. Her themes are those of life and death itself, of childhood, love, loss and longing. Recognising that everyone experiences these universals as part of their own unique story, De BournazelÕs visual meditations are always open to interpretation and reinterpretation. Every encounter, even with the same book, yields new insights as new details appear and new connections are noticed between the pages. This is a rich symbolic world, full of unexpected resonances and symmetries.

[CHILDREN BOOK / MODERN ART]. HEERUP, HENRY:
Legedage (Playdays). K¿benhavn 1969.
. Royal folio. Size: 62.5 x 57.4 cm. Album including preface (one page) and eight brightly coloured lithographs mounted in passe-partout. Signed and numbered by Heerup. Publisher's half cloth portfolio with colour decorated boards, original ties. First edition, number 75 of 100 copies on vélin d'Arches. (Another twenty-five copies were issued for collaborators). Printed by J. Chr. S¿rensen and published by Centre Graphique in Copenhagen. An outstanding work by the great Danish artist Heerup illustrating his childhood. Henry Heerup (1907-99) worked all through his life with painting, sculpture, etching and drawing. He was not concerned with the need for originality in art, preferring instead to reach a wide public rather than creating superior art for museums. Heerup was a member of the Cobra movement and participated in its exhibitions at Amsterdam in 1949 and at Liège in 1952. Heerup first became famous for his junk sculptures. He created eccentric and strange figures made out of old bedposts, broken toys and old trash which he found on his daily bicycle rides. It was as a painter and graphic artist that Heerup gained his popular breakthrough. He developed his own unique and imaginative style where the fundamental source of his narrative is ordinary life; everyday settings including love, family, children, sex, etc. This work is devoted to Heerups' own childhood, illustrating: The young Henry playing with a huge dog, riding a bike when he lost a gramophone, beaten by the schoolmaster, dressed up as a knight battling bedbugs, dancing to a street organ, sharing the Christmas porridge with a cat, climbing up onto the roof of a tram, a policeman chasing naughty boys, etc. Rare. Collectors often frame the lithographs and very few complete copies of this book have thus survived. Ref. Holstebro Kunstmuseum and Arken Museum of Modern Art ("Henry Heerup: Faith, Hope and Charity" 2003).

Hermant's novel "Phili, ou par-delà le bien et le mal" is about a prince Philippe-Egon and the beautiful young girl Sophie. The story unfolds in a flamboyant setting of luxury, dance and seduction. The novel is complemented by the exquisite images of Brunelleschi, which exemplify the emerging Art Deco style of the 1920s. Occasionally some offsetting from plates as normal and some leaves with light browning to outer edge. Two plates with small light crease at margin but it's a great fresh copy of Brunelleschi's chef-d'oeuvre. Ercoli G. Il Pochoir Art Déco' pp. 32.
