First volume in First State dustwrapper. Bright set of one of the most elegaic and best-loved accounts of the English countryside of the twentieth century. Based loosely on Tewkesbury and Bredon (Gloucestershire and Wiltshire respectively), the three novels together paint an unforgettable image of a rural England long passed away. Writing only twenty years or so after Hardy's death, Moore rekindles the spirit: 'the finest countryside writer of his generation' (Compton Mackenzie).
