ALEXANDER, LUCY M. AND FANNY WALKER YEATMAN (U.S. DEPT. OF AGRICULTURE), Pork in Preferred Ways
ALEXANDER, LUCY M. AND FANNY WALKER YEATMAN (U.S. DEPT. OF AGRICULTURE)
Pork in Preferred Ways
Washington, DC: U.S. Department of Agriculture, 1929. 1st Edition; 1st Printing. Pamphlet. B&W Photographs; This is a four page pamphlet issued by the Dept of Agriculture featuring the uses of pork and includes 13 recipes. The pamphlet is in Good condition overall. Both top and bottom spine ends have separated and torn (the top spine is torn about an inch in depth, the bottom spine, somewhat more than an inch). There are several small edge nicks to the covers and the pamphlet has been folded in half at some point in time, leaving a crease. There is one tear to the spine of the pamphlet which travels inward about half an inch. A previous owner has penciled in a few notation (underlined the titles of the recipes and notated that there are 13 recipes, otherwise, the text is clean and bright). The pamphlet itself is on off white / possibly cream colored paper which has darkened somewhat. Recipes include Panned Pork Chops, Stuffed Rib Chops with Apples, Pork Chop Suey, and others. The lettering on the front cover and for the decorations on the interior are Art Deco in style. This is an interesting ephemeral piece and rather difficult to find in any condition. "Pork makes up nearly half of the meat eaten in the United States. Although most of the pork reaches the consumer as cured ham, shoulder, bacon, and other preserved products, modern refrigerating methods make possible an abundant supply of the fresh meat at all seasons." (from Wikipedia). Good .

It is the only existing work of colonial academic architecture that was principally designed from a plate in Andrea Palladio's I Quattro Libri dell'Architettura (The Four Books of Architecture) (1570). The house was designed by the architect William Buckland in 1773–1774 for wealthy farmer Matthias Hammond of Anne Arundel County, Maryland. It was modeled on the design of the Villa Pisani in Montagnana, Italy, as depicted in Book II, Chapter XIV of Palladio's work. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1960, and is now managed by a non-profit organization as a museum. " (from Wikipedia). Very Good+ in Very Good dust jacket .

The Art of Preserving All Kinds of Animal and Vegetable Substances for Several Years.
St. Louis, MO: TAC Food Classics, 1965. Facsimile. Hardcover. Trade PB. B&W Illustrations; Facsimile edition. This is a trade paperback book. The book is in Very Good+ condition and was issued without a dust jacket. The book covers have some beginning bumping and wear to the spine ends and corners. There are several spots of ground-in dirt to the covers as well. The text pages are clean and bright (the yellowed spots on the pages are deliberate to make the book look old). "In 1804, La Maison Appert (English: The House of Appert) , in the town of Massy, near Paris, became the first food bottling factory in the world, years before Louis Pasteur proved that heat killed bacteria. Appert then established a business to preserve a variety of food in sealed bottles. At first he used champagne bottles, imperfectly sealed by a mixture of cheese and mineral lime. Appert's method transitioned to filling thick, large-mouthed glass bottles with produce of every description, ranging from beef, fowl, eggs, milk, and prepared dishes. Appert avoided using tinplate in his early manufacture because the quality of French tinplate was poor. He left air space at the top of the bottle, and the cork would then be sealed firmly in the jar by using a vise. The bottle was then wrapped in canvas to protect it, dunked into boiling water, and boiled for as much time as Appert deemed appropriate for cooking the contents thoroughly. In honor of Appert, canning is sometimes called "appertization", which is distinct from pasteurization. " (from Wikipedia). Very Good+ .

2000 Useful Facts About Food Labor, Time and Money-Saving Hints, Advice and Suggestions. . .
Chicago, IL: Consolidated Book Company, 1941. Stapled wraps. B&W Illustrations; This is a trade sized paperback booklet with thin, slick cardstock covers and a stapled spine. The booklet is in Very Good condition and was issued without a dust jacket. There is some edge wear and nicking to the spine ends and corners of the book covers. The text pages are clean and bright. "In 1938 Davidow moved to Chicago, where he became president of a company called Consolidated Book Publishers, which continued to publish cookbooks under the CAI imprint, most notably The American Woman’s Cookbook, which drew heavily on the Delineator material. Edited by Berolzheimer, the Institute’s new director, it was published in 1939, one year before James Beard’s first cookbook. Over 800 pages long and one of the first—if not the first—cookbooks to use four-color photography, by 1943 it had sold a million copies, and by the early 70s eight million, according to Daniels. Early chapters on technique, temperature, meal planning, and table setting give way to recipe categories as varied as toast (ten recipes) , vegetarian (peanut and carrot loaf) , food for invalids (flaxseed lemonade) , and French (including, dubiously, gnocchi). There’s chicken a la king, there’s chop suey, there’s sweetbread-and-oyster pie. There’s also a glossary of foreign—mostly French—cooking terms and a chapter on cooking with wine that includes a chart grading various French wines." (Mike Sula September 11, 2008, Reader magazine, Chicago, IL). Very Good .

SUN-MAID RAISIN GROWERS OF CALIFORNIA, Downright Delicious Sun-Maid Raisin Recipes
SUN-MAID RAISIN GROWERS OF CALIFORNIA
Downright Delicious Sun-Maid Raisin Recipes
Fresno, CA: Sun-Maid Raisin Growers of California, 0. Stapled wraps. B&W Illustrations; This is a small format booklet with illustrated cardstock covers and a stapled spine. The booklet is in Near Fine condition and was issued without a dust jacket. There is some beginning rubbing to the foredges of the book covers. The text pages are clean and bright. "In 1873, Francis T. Eisen planted an experimental vineyard of Muscat grapes on 25 acres (10 hectares) along Fancher Creek, just east of Fresno. By 1878, packaged raisins were being shipped out of the state, and by 1903, California was producing 120 million pounds of raisins a year. Packing houses quickly became a vital link between the grower and the consumer, and dozens sprouted up across the San Joaquin Valley. Employing hundreds of immigrant people, these facilities received the sun-dried raisins from growers, which they stored, processed, packaged, and shipped throughout the United States and to countries around the world. When the transcontinental railroad was completed in 1869, farmers and immigrants from the East settled the area for the first time, and growers were able to quickly transport products from the West to new markets. In 1872, Leland Stanford brought the Central Pacific Railroad to the San Joaquin Valley, choosing a location in present-day downtown Fresno as the rail stop, Fresno Station. Depots in surrounding communities soon followed. As the railroads expanded, so too did the area surrounding Fresno Station, attracting farmers to grow agricultural products to satisfy the increasing demand from faraway markets. Many of the families suffered due to harmful chemicals that they were faced with while working on the farms. " (from Wikipedia). Near Fine .
