B&W Photographs; This is a four page pamphlet issued by the Dept of Agriculture featuring the uses of pork and includes 13 recipes. The pamphlet is in Good condition overall. Both top and bottom spine ends have separated and torn (the top spine is torn about an inch in depth, the bottom spine, somewhat more than an inch). There are several small edge nicks to the covers and the pamphlet has been folded in half at some point in time, leaving a crease. There is one tear to the spine of the pamphlet which travels inward about half an inch. A previous owner has penciled in a few notation (underlined the titles of the recipes and notated that there are 13 recipes, otherwise, the text is clean and bright). The pamphlet itself is on off white / possibly cream colored paper which has darkened somewhat. Recipes include Panned Pork Chops, Stuffed Rib Chops with Apples, Pork Chop Suey, and others. The lettering on the front cover and for the decorations on the interior are Art Deco in style. This is an interesting ephemeral piece and rather difficult to find in any condition. "Pork makes up nearly half of the meat eaten in the United States. Although most of the pork reaches the consumer as cured ham, shoulder, bacon, and other preserved products, modern refrigerating methods make possible an abundant supply of the fresh meat at all seasons." "Wesson was originally a trademark of the Southern Cotton Oil Company, named after David Wesson (1861–1934) , a food chemist at the firm who, in 1899 developed a novel process for deodorizing cottonseed oil, producing the first commercial all-vegetable shortenings from cottonseeds. This new product was marketed as Snowdrift. The Savannah, Georgia, factory was erected in 1911 and torn down in 2004. In the 1920s, the vegetable oil division was spun off as the Wesson Oil & Snowdrift Company. In 1960, this firm merged with Hunt's Foods, Inc. "In 1804, La Maison Appert (English: The House of Appert) , in the town of Massy, near Paris, became the first food bottling factory in the world, years before Louis Pasteur proved that heat killed bacteria. Appert then established a business to preserve a variety of food in sealed bottles. At first he used champagne bottles, imperfectly sealed by a mixture of cheese and mineral lime. Appert's method transitioned to filling thick, large-mouthed glass bottles with produce of every description, ranging from beef, fowl, eggs, milk, and prepared dishes. Appert avoided using tinplate in his early manufacture because the quality of French tinplate was poor. He left air space at the top of the bottle, and the cork would then be sealed firmly in the jar by using a vise. The bottle was then wrapped in canvas to protect it, dunked into boiling water, and boiled for as much time as Appert deemed appropriate for cooking the contents thoroughly. On January 19, 1985, she appeared on the nationally televised broadcast of the 50th Presidential Inaugural Gala, the night before the second inauguration of Ronald Reagan. "In 1873, Francis T. Eisen planted an experimental vineyard of Muscat grapes on 25 acres (10 hectares) along Fancher Creek, just east of Fresno. By 1878, packaged raisins were being shipped out of the state, and by 1903, California was producing 120 million pounds of raisins a year. Packing houses quickly became a vital link between the grower and the consumer, and dozens sprouted up across the San Joaquin Valley. Employing hundreds of immigrant people, these facilities received the sun-dried raisins from growers, which they stored, processed, packaged, and shipped throughout the United States and to countries around the world. When the transcontinental railroad was completed in 1869, farmers and immigrants from the East settled the area for the first time, and growers were able to quickly transport products from the West to new markets. In 1872, Leland Stanford brought the Central Pacific Railroad to the San Joaquin Valley, choosing a location in present-day downtown Fresno as the rail stop, Fresno Station. Depots in surrounding communities soon followed. As the railroads expanded, so too did the area surrounding Fresno Station, attracting farmers to grow agricultural products to satisfy the increasing demand from faraway markets.
