TREGEAR, MARY
Song Ceramics
Thames & Hudson, Ltd, London. 1982, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0500233462). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (cloth with dust jacket); 29 x 32.8 cm; 2,564 kg; 262 pages. Includes 317 illustrations, 42 in colour, and 35 maps and line drawings.; Used book with signs of wear namely on the dust jacket that has small tears and scuffs. Interior in very good condition. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover.; The three centuries spanned by the Song (Sung) dynasty, 960-1278, saw a brilliant flowering of the art of the potter in China. Two major factors behind this development were aesthetic appreciation of fine design and workmanship shown by the Song court and the rise of China as a maritime power in the eleventh century, providing the opportunity for the expansion of foreign trade. Thanks to the widespread demand for high-quality wares, output was greatly increased in this period. Today surviving specimens are still greatly appreciated by collectors and connoisseurs for their outstanding elegance and sophistication, as well as being a source of inspirations for leading studio-potters. In this important study the author describes in detail the historical background and development of Song-dynasty ceramic styles, executed largely in stoneware. There are illustrations of numerous outstanding pieces from collections throughout the world. Characteristic examples have been chosen to represent the wide variety of forms and styles of decoration, whether painted, incised or impressed, produced at leading kiln sites in both north and South China, as well as Korean celadon and other wares inspired by Chinese originals. Although many kilns had existed for a century or more before the beginning of the Song dynasty, specialization was a new phenomenon and wares began to be specifically named for the first time, e.g. Ding ware, Yaozhou ware, Ru ware - names which have remained in use ever since. Characteristic shapes identified with certain kilns are shown in the line drawings, and all the forms potted - from meiping vases to cup-stands and incense burners - are discussed in the context of the individual wares. Glazes, generally thick and sometimes featuring internal bubbles or enhanced by crackle, are at this period still generally restrained in color but often enliven the otherwise sombre character of the major wares, and the distinctive characteristics of the various styles are clearly seen in the individual illustrations. With this detailed maps of kiln sites, glossary of technical terms, bibliography, chronological table and detailed notes on the illustrations, this book is an essential guide to all aspects of the enormous ceramic output of those anonymous Song potters whose work is still held in such high reward seven centuries later. Good/Dust Jacket Included.

WATSON, WILLIAM
Pre-Tang Ceramics of China: Chinese Pottery from 4000 Bc to 600 Ad
Faber and Faber Limited, London. 1991, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0571154336). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 20 x 25.5 cm; 1.062 Kg; 237 pages with black-and-white and colour illustrations; Used book with minor signs of wear, namely on the dust jacket.; China has the richest and most continuous tradition of ceramic production in the world. At their best, the early Chinese wares rival those of the Tang and Song periods for boldness and imagination, and for mastery of the technique in decoration, the shaping of forms and the use of materials, especially the wares of the powerful Han dynasty (206BC-221AD). Remarkable pieces from the two Zhou dynasties (1027-256BC) and from the Yangshao and Longshan neolithic periods (6th - 2nd millennium BC) also survive. Professor Watson's book, which makes extensive use of recent excavations and research in China, where many discoveries are being made, is the first comprehensive and authoritative book to have been written on this wide-ranging and important subject. In the six main chapters, attention is focused on the local evolution of the shapes and ornament of vessels in the main regions of China, that is, the north-central, north-east, north-west, central, south-east, south-west and southern regions. At the same time each chapter is divided into similar chronological sub-sections so that, for instance, the wares of the Eastern Zhou in the different regions can be compared. A strikingly unified historical development emerges, revealing how distinct early Chinese ceramics are from ceramics in other parts of Asia and in Europe. The book, which is illustrated with over 170 photographs and 260 line drawings, concludes with chapters on kilns and on shapes, models and figures. William Watson was Professor of Chinese art and archaeology at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, from 1966 to 1983, and also head of the Percival David Foundation, and he is a scholar of international standing with many important books to his credit. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

WATSON, WILLIAM
Tang and Liao Ceramics
Rizolli International Publications, Inc. New York. 1984. (ISBN: 0847805263). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (cloth with dust jacket); 29 x 32.8 cm; 2,690 kg; 283 pages. Includes 319 illustrations, of which 40 are in colour; Used book with minor signs of wear namely some small bumps on the hardcover cloth. The spine of the dust jacket is slightly faded. The interior is in very good condition.; Chinese ceramics of the Tang and Liao periods receive the most comprehensive examination in Western literature in this new study by one of the world's foremost scholars on Far Eastern art. William Watson describes and analyses all aspects of these extraordinary wares wholly from the evidence of the most recent excavations and Chinese archaeological studies appearing since 1949. No other history of the ceramics of this era has attempted so detailed a survey based on the latest findings. The ceramics of the Tang dynasty (618-907), through its lead-glazed pottery and its figurines, dramatically reflect the exchange of ideas that accompanied the expansion of Chinese influence into Central Asia. The mid-Tang period marked the beginning of a huge increase in trade - tea, salt and pottery were the main goods traded within China, and gradually the exchange of pottery came to assume an importance comparable to that of silk in the external trade with India and the Near East. There is nothing in earlier ceramics that compares with the fortuitous beauty of the splashed decoration on the Tang lead-glazed pieces or with the unpredictable ornament afforded by the suffused glazes on stoneware. At no other time in their history have Chinese potters played more boldly on their themes than during the Tang dynasty, and none of their heirs since has treated extravagance so lightly or has so well delivered the freshness that is expressed through such technical perfection. Against a background of native Chinese tradition, William Watson treats the exotic influences that give Tang art its distinctive character. The historical and technical aspects of Tang ceramics are thoroughly discussed with special attention to the types of wares and figurines with additional observation of works from the Sui and Five Dynasties periods. The author also devotes a special chapter to the ceramics of the Liao dynasty (947-1125), a Qidan empire bounded on the south by the Great Wall in northern Shanxi, on the east by northern Hebei and including the province of Liaoning and, broadly speaking, the whole of Inner Mongolia. Although the period of Liao rule overlaps with the Song government in China, Liao pottery is not a provincial manifestation of Song methods and styles, but in essential aspects shows the survival through the Liao period of types and techniques that prolong Tang-dynasty standards. William Watson was formerly head of the Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art in London and is the author of many standard works on Chinese Art. Very Good/Dust Jacket Included.

JORGE WELSH (ED.); AND KERR, ROSE (INTRODUCTION)
Porcelain People: Figures from the Qing Dynasty
Jorge Welsh Research and Publishing. 2021, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9781838216320). Hardcover. Book, English text.; Hardcover.; 23.5 x 29.7 cm.; 1.6 Kg.; 204 pages with 160 colour illustrations.; Limited edition of 400 copies.; Exibition catalogue which explores the range and virtuosity of the representation of the human figure in Chinese porcelain. Showcasing objects made in the three successive reigns of Kangxi (1662-1722), Yongzheng (1723-1735) and Qianlong (1736-1795), the catalogue highlights the extraordinary ability of the Chinese potter to transform clay into intricate figures, bestowing on them the strong expressive characteristics and symbolic powers that have long been a tradition in Chinese ceramics. Included are figures representing both Asian and Western people, which helped set the stage for a growing fashion in Europe throughout the 18th century for decorative porcelain figurines made in China. Some of the 53 individual figures discussed and illustrated in the 35 catalogue entries are purely Chinese in subject matter, while others are copied from European models; some were created as religious icons for private use, and others fed the European appetite for 'chinoiserie' displays. Moulded in Dehua and Jingdezhen, all of these figures helped facilitate an understanding and awareness among Chinese and Europeans of their respective cultures, while also inspiring some compelling interpretations, and encouraged European artisans, such as those working at Meissen, to produce sculptural objects synonymous with rococo art. The catalogue includes an article by Rose Kerr on the history and evolution of the representation of the human form in Chinese ceramic art. New/No Jacket.

A. A. Balkema, Cape Town, Rotterdam. 1974. (ISBN: 0869610562). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 20.5 x 28 cm; 1.1 Kg; 228 pages with black and white and a few colour illustrations.; Used with signs of wear, namely on the dust jacket that has scuffs and a a minor tear and chip on the top of the spine. Interior in very good condition. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover.; This is the first book on its field, and fills a gap which all collectors of Africana, as well as those interested in ceramics for their own sake, have long been aware. The book contains a summary of the ceramic trade of the Dutch East India Company with particular reference to the Cape; a description of the kinds of ceramic trade of the Dutch East India Company with particular reference to the Cape; a description of the kinds of ceramics sent there from Batavia in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries; and, through a study of the inventories of deceased estates in the Cape Archives, an account of their surprisingly early importance in the social life of the Colony. A thought-provoking chapter surveys the strengths and weaknesses of South African collections and discusses the role of museum, auctioneers and dealer in the life of the collector. In addition there is a major section on all the various ceramics with the V.O.C. monogram, which includes material from museums in other countries, particularly Holland, and takes account of the continued use of the monogram in the nineteenth century on the well-known Delft tobacco (more correctly snuff) jars. Oriental martavans, and Chinese porcelain enamelled at Canton with subjects of special interest to South Africans - the arms of Cape families and the Dutch fleet in Table Bay - are also examined in detail. This book is fully illustrated with photographs from South African public and private collections and, in the case of the V.O.C. section, overseas museums as well; there are a number of line-drawings and text figures done by the author. Good/Dust Jacket Included.
