HOWARD, DAVID SANCTUARY
Chinese Armorial Porcelain: Volume II
Heirloom & Howard Limited, England. 2003, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0954438906). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover dark blue buckram with dust jacket in slipcase; 22.9 x 29.3 cm; 4.313 Kg; 904 pages with 1,880 colour illustrations, 1,500 armorial services described; STILL WRAPPED IN PLASTIC.; Foreword by Peter Ll. Gwynn-Jones, CVO, Garter Principal King of Arms.; In 1974 Faber & Faber published Chinese Armorial Porcelain which has remained the most comprehensive book on the subject. At that time David Howard did not anticipate the need for a second volume; however, continued research has resulted in this book which illustrates 1,380 services not illustrated in Volume I, in addition to the 160 services which formed the addendum to that volume. The material in Chinese Armorial Porcelain Volume II is almost entirely additional to the first volume, containing a new introduction and four new chapters on aspects of the China Trade. All the appendices are revised and extended and the index of mottoes and index of services cover both volumes (the later containing an alphabetical list of over 4,000 services - more than 3,320 illustrated and 680 unillustrated - all made for the British or American market). This is an essential companion for those who own the first volume but this book certainly stands on its own and, as Garter King of Arms writes in the foreword, 'is an astounding work - destined to be a major reference source in the future'. While the book relies heavily on the evidence of armorials and their ability to date, sometimes to the exact year, when a service was made, it also throws extra light on to the whole China Trade which was an integral part of the commercial success of the 18th Century Britain. The details of captains and supercargoes and the record of the sheer volume of trade which attended the growth of the largest company the world has ever known - the Honourable East India Company - provide a reliable and accurate backdrop to many other events in the 18th Century. This also enables researchers to use the evidence of heraldry and the 1,980 illustrations (all but 100 in colour) to date many stylistic changes of porcelain in a way which, because of the lack Chinese records of the export trade, would not otherwise be possible. Publication of the first volume led to a reassessment of the scale of this specialist porcelain trade which was handled, almost exclusively, by private traders working with framework of the East India Company. Details of what these merchants purchased are not recorded in the India Office Library and it is only possible to gauge their influence on trade and decorative etiquette in Europe by studying what they brought home - some 12,000 miles by sea - at a time when travel was far less certain than it is today. The chapters in this book explain not only the natural but also the political risks of trading in the 18th Century. To many, this volume will provide the moment when the identity of a piece of porcelain is revealed. While the book, with its considerable index of mottoes and cross-references to both volumes, will fulfill that need, in his foreword Garter King of Arms concludes, 'Unlike so many works on an esoteric subject, this had the aesthetic combined with the heraldic and genealogical to ensure a wider base of popular support - from the connoisseur to the armorist and from the collector of works of art to the social historian.'.;Containing: Introduction and four illustrated chapters on aspects of the China Trade: 1.Reflections, Replacements, Reproductions and Revival, 2.Of Counters, Carriages and Bookplates, 3.Armorial Porcelain for Scotland and the role of the Swedish East India Company, 4.Chinese Armorial Porcelain: The Market during the last Century and in the Future and The Laws of Blazon, a chapter on understanding heraldry. Together with a comprehensive analysis and classification of styles and dates of armorial porcelain.General Index and 50-page comprehensive Index of Services. New/Dust Jacket Included.

Later Chinese Porcelain: The Ch'Ing Dynasty (1644-1912)
Faber and Faber Limited, London. 1965, 3rd Edition. (ISBN: 0571047610). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 16.5 x 25.5 cm; 0.763 kg; 111 pages plus appendix with plates. Includes 120 pages of monochrome half-tone illustrations and 6 colour plates.; Used book in good condition with signs of wear, namely some wear marks, scuffs and tears on the dust jacket. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover.; This book is devoted less to the familiar famille verte and famille rose which were largely export wares made specially for the European market than to the wares of the same period in the true Chinese taste. When it was first published in 1951 interest in the latter wares, which were not on the whole well represented in western collections, was limited, but it was stimulated first by the great Burlington House exhibition in 1935 and since then by the display of the imperial collections in the National Palace Museum in Taiwan, which have become well known to western connoisseurs. Ch'ing porcelain in the Chinese taste is now better know and appreciated than ever before. Mr. Jenyn's pioneer work must have played no small part in bringing to the study of Chinese porcelain a greater appreciation in the west of the finest porcelain of the Ch'ing dynasty. His book still remains the only major work dealing with this subject. For this third edition the text had been revised and brought up to date, and there are two new colour plates. JENYNS, SOAME
Ming Pottery and Porcelain
Faber and Faber Limited, London. 1953, 1st Edition. Hardcover. Book, English text.; Hardcover (without dust jacket); 16 x 26 cm; 0.8 Kg; 160 pages followed by an addendum with black-and-white illustrations ; Used with signs of wear on the exterior and interior. Overall in good condition. Yellowing on front and rear free endpaper. Good readable copy.; "The study of Chinese porcelain has always been a difficult one in Europe, chiefly on account of the customary use of commemorative marks. With the growing western familiarity with Chinese script it seemed possible about 1900 to start the business of classification seriously. This was in the west chiefly a study of the apparently capricious forging of export porcelains which commonly bore not the reign-names but the names of earlier famous Emperors in whose reigns they might have been made but in fact were not. This fact was not appreciated by the western purchaser and eventually a wave of optimism began to rise and wares with Ming marks began to be accepted as of the Dynasty or reign. But so great a quantity of Chinese porcelain was being imported, most of it still bearing a Ming reign-mark, that it has taken nearly a century to discredit its marking. What was 'Ming' is still Ming; the name has become a 'household word' for old Chinese porcelain in general. Lastly came the present phase of reaction when it has become a fashionable pursuit to 'spot' the Ming pieces in cabinets mainly devoted to the wares of K'ang Hsi (1662 . 1722). For it was obvious that much Ming porcelain must exist in western collections and it has been Mr. Jenyns's task to help us to recognise it. With his wide knowledge of literary and classical Chinese, his familiarity with the old Chinese books on porcelain, as well as his gifts as poet-translator, he is well equipped to distinguish the true Ming wares." foreword by W.B.H. KERR, ROSE
Yaozhou Wares from Museums and Art Institutes Around the World: Including Yaozhou Tribute Wares
2021, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9781788841771). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket) in slipcase.; 33 x 27.5cm; 2.8 Kg; 287 pages with colour illustrations throughout.; New. May show signs of handling and shelf wear.; Yaozhou ware is one of the finest Chinese celadons, made in north China over a period of seven hundred years, from the 7th to the 14th centuries. Their style developed and changed over time. In the Tang dynasty (618-906) black, brown, lead glazed and black-on-white painted ceramics were made. During the Five Dynasties period (907-960) a technical peak was achieved, and white-bodied wares with beautiful blue-green glazes appeared. During the Northern Song and Jin dynasties (906-1279) more olive-toned celadon glazes became the norm, their intricate decoration and lustrous surfaces supplying a unique aesthetic. At the end of the Jin dynasty the kilns declined, and started to manufacture folk ware. Yaozhou Wares from Museums and Art Institutes Around the World gathers illustrations and descriptions of some of the finest Yaozhou wares in private and public collections around the globe. The account considers ceramics in sections, according to their form and decoration, and includes the finest-quality "official wares" requisitioned for imperial use. Copious illustrations are augmented by a scholarly essay. Highlighting over 400 pieces of Yaozhou ware, the book contains 711 colour and 3 black-and-white illustrations from 56 major museums and art institutes, and will inspire collectors, students and anyone with a love for Chinese ceramics. Rose Kerr is an English art historian specialising in Chinese art, especially Chinese ceramics. She graduated in Chinese studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies in London, and was one of a handful of British students to live and study in China during the last year of the Cultural Revolution, 1975-1976. She has often travelled round China, visiting museums and ancient kiln sites. After working for 25 years at the Victoria & Albert Museum, she now concentrates on teaching, research and writing. This is her 28th book on Chinese art. New/Dust Jacket Included.

KRAHE, CINTA
Chinese Porcelain in Habsburg Spain
Centro de Estudios Europa Hispánica. 2016, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9788415245513). Hardcover. Book, English text; Hardcover; 18.5 x 29 cm; 2.068 Kg; 600 pages with 345 colour illustrations; STILL WRAPPED IN PLASTIC; Although Spain was one of the main commercial and colonial powers of the Modern Age, its role in the circulation of Chinese export porcelain was far from being very clear. The present work, which examines the reception of pieces of this kind during the reign of the Habsburgs, is therefore intended to fill an important gap. Together with lacquered objects and exotica, porcelain circulated throughout the Spanish Empire, passing through the Americas, but until now there had been no record of the pieces that reached the Spanish market. However, Krahe reconstructs the journey of this porcelain ware from southern China, analyzing what it was like, how it was displayed and stored, to what uses it was put and how it was valued in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Spain. Based on thorough archival research, a systematic survey of archaeological discoveries, a rich documentary corpus and a great deal of illustrations, the author provides an insight into a hitherto unknown aspect, opening up new perspectives for historians, art historians, and historians of material culture and taste. Cinta Krahe, who holds a Master's degree in Chinese Art and Archaeology from the School of African and Oriental Studies (SOAS), University of London, earned a doctorate from Leiden University and has been teaching for many years as an expert on decorative arts of East Asia. She was in charge of cataloging the porcelain of the galleon San Diego for the Museo Naval in Madrid and one of the organisers of the exhibition Orientando la mirada: arte asiático en las colecciones públicas madrileñas (Madrid, 2009). She is a member of the research group Arts of Asia (Complutense University of Madrid), and has participated in numerous university seminars, lectures and courses accross europe. New/No Jacket.

However on volume 2: the top of the first pages have minor untrimmed edges, and one page a tiny tear and also two of the pages have signs of have been glued to each other.; CURRENTLY OUT OF PRINT. VERY HARD TO FIND.; "The first volume of this catalogue contains mainly earthenwares and stonewares from the Neolithic period to the Song dynasty (AD 960-1279), the second porcelains from the Yuan (AD1279-1368) to the Qing dynasty. Although the two volumes belong together, they are conceived as individual books, each with its own working bibliography. Volume One contains small maps of China, highlighting the most important, if not the only, regions of ceramic manufacture in different periods; these were not necessary in Volume Two, where most pieces come from kiln centre, Jingdezhen in Jiangxi province. In Volume One attributions to the places of manufacture are given as precisely as possible, distinctions being made between a definitely identified kiln, a province, and a more general area of manufacture. The reference illustrations in Volume One show objects in other materials, also from the Meiyintang collection. In Volume Two all reign marks not illustrated in colour are included in an appendix; only those distinct enough for clear reproduction are repeated under the catalogue entry itself." excerpt from the introduction by Regina Krahl. Early Chinese Blue-and-White Porcelain: The Mingzhitang Collection of Sir Joseph Hotung
CA Book Publishing. 2022, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 9789887608943). Hardcover. Book, English text; Hardcover (cloth without dust jacket - as issued); 26 cm x 33 cm; 1.6 Kg; 172 pages with 134 colour plates.; The Mingzhitang Collection of Sir Joseph Hotung is one of the finest collections in the world to capture the essence of early Chinese blue-and-white porcelain. With twenty outstanding examples, it concentrates on the first hundred years of China's blue-and-white production, in the late Yuan (1271-1368) and early Ming (1368-1644) dynasties - a period that was never surpassed in artistic ingenuity and material quality. The charisma and the energy of the masterly paintings on porcelain created in the Yuan dynasty at the kilns of Jingdezhen in Jiangxi province, which made this genre so influential and universally admired, are represented with twelve exceptional examples, most of them unique. They demonstrate the powerful blue-and-white style developed under Mongol rule, when the artisans appear to have been working with few restraints. The collection equally documents the much more refined and sophisticated early Ming style of the Yongle (1403-24) and Xuande (1426-35) reigns, when production was closely controlled by an imperial court with exceptionally high standards. Here, the collection illustrates two stylistic strands that existed side by side: porcelains decorated completely in Chinese taste and vessels in the shapes and patterns of Islamic metalwork from countries in close diplomatic contact with the Chinese court. The wares of this period defined imperial porcelain styles until the end of China's last dynasty. The book is lavishly illustrated and contains a general introduction on early Chinese blue-and-white porcelain, an extensive description, documentation and discussion of each piece, and a bibliography. Regina Krahl is an independent researcher of Chinese works of art, whose many publications include the three-volume catalogue raisonné Chinese Ceramics in the Topkapi Saray Museum, Istanbul, edited by John Ayers (1986), and the four-volume catalogue Chinese Ceramics from the Meiyintang Collection (1994-2010). KWAN, SIMON S.M
The Imperial Porcelain Wares of the Late Qing Dynasty (2 Volumes)
University of Hong Kong. 1989, 1st Edition. Hardcover. Book, English text; Hardcover (without dust jacket); 22 x 29.8 cm; 4.6 Kg; Volume 1 with 407 pages; Volume 2, pages 408 to 487 followed by a list of 276 plates (each with caption) from the author collection comprising Wares from Daoguang, Xiaofeng, Tongzhi, Guangxu and Xuantong. Black and white illustrations throughout.; Used with signs of wear on the exterior and interior. The hardcover front covers is turning inwards at the top right side. Both volumes include a sticker with the author name on spine, which is slightly ungluing on volume 1.; Abstract of thesis entitled: "The Imperial Porcelain Wares of the Late Qing Dynasty" submitted by Simon S. M. Kwan for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong, July, 1989. This thesis is devoted to the study of Qing ceramics from the reign of Daoguang (1821.1850) to the reign of Xuantong (1909-1911), covering a period of approximately ninety years. During this period, the ceramic art of China was dominated by the work of the Imperial Porcelain Factory. This Factory was responsible for the production of practically all the ceramic wares required by the imperial court. The Imperial Porcelain Factory of the late Qing period, or the "Imperial Kilns" as it was commonly called, was located in Jingdezhen, near Zhushan. Two versions of the annual production catalogues of the Factory are available today. One belongs to the reign of Tongzhi (1862-1874) and the other one belongs to the reign of Guangxu (1875-1908). Items mentioned in these two catalogues have been almost completely identified and are illustrated in this thesis. Ceramic wares produced by the Imperial Factory, that is, the imperial wares, may be classified into these main categories, ritual vessels, domestic wares and special items. Designs for all these wares were prepared at the imperial palace under the direct control of the Emperor and the Department of Works. Drawings and wooden models were made in Beijing and sent to Jingdezhen from time to time. Sample pieces were made by the Factory and returned to the palace for approval and ordering. The Imperial Porcelain Factory of the late Qing period was a fully equipped establishment of producing ceramic wares from the raw clay stage to the fully decorated city bodies ready for firing. However, the actual work of the firing on a consignment basis. Firing kilns for these wares were the egg-shaped kilns of Jingdezhen and the firing material was the wood of pine trees. Decoration and design of the Imperial wares of late Qing were substantially based on the designs of the Ming and early Qing period. However, there were other innovative designs and decorative techniques developed during this period. Finally, almost every one of the imperial wares of this period carries an imperial mark. As these marks are identifiable as being written by a very limited number of mark-writers at the Factory, they serve as an important guide for the authentication of the Imperial porcelain wares of the late Qing dynasty. Margaret Medley, formerly Curator of the Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art, University of London and John Ayers, lately Keeper of the Far Eastern Section at the Victoria and Albert Museum were invited to examine the collection in detail; the enthusiasm and appreciation of the importance of this unknown collection by these two internationally respected authorities has contributed considerably to maintain the impetus of the project. In the past year Sonja Howlett, the Research Assistant in Fine Arts, has completely re-designed the displays in Gallery 8 to include Chinese Imperial and Chinese taste porcelains, blanc de Chine wares and snuffbottles, whilst the Chinese Export wares have been moved to Gallery 4 with complementary collections from Japan and neighbouring countries, also now in re-designed displays." excerpt from the foreword by Christopher Powell-Cottom, Chairman of the Governors, 1988. When it first appeared in the fourteenth century Chinese connoisseurs ahd regarded it as vulgar and garish, and a hundred years later, after receiving immense Imperial patronage during the Xuande reign, was the victim of an austere puritanical reaction. Since the Chenghua reign later in the fifteenth century, however, "blue and white" has gone from strengh, and in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries had an immense effect on porcelain production in the West. In this new history, the author traces the history of "blue and white" from its uncertain beginnings to the end of the Qing Dynasty. Considerable attention is also paid throughout to social and political events so that the reader can see something of the purely "human" conditions that were contemporary with the production of the porcelain. "This book will be of value not only to the expert, but also to the beginner who will find, in a handy form, much of value when evaluating the authenticity, provenance and dating of Chinese 'blue and white'." - from the Oriental Art review of the First Edition.
