At that time David Howard did not anticipate the need for a second volume; however, continued research has resulted in this book which illustrates 1,380 services not illustrated in Volume I, in addition to the 160 services which formed the addendum to that volume. The material in Chinese Armorial Porcelain Volume II is almost entirely additional to the first volume, containing a new introduction and four new chapters on aspects of the China Trade. All the appendices are revised and extended and the index of mottoes and index of services cover both volumes (the later containing an alphabetical list of over 4,000 services - more than 3,320 illustrated and 680 unillustrated - all made for the British or American market). This is an essential companion for those who own the first volume but this book certainly stands on its own and, as Garter King of Arms writes in the foreword, 'is an astounding work - destined to be a major reference source in the future'. While the book relies heavily on the evidence of armorials and their ability to date, sometimes to the exact year, when a service was made, it also throws extra light on to the whole China Trade which was an integral part of the commercial success of the 18th Century Britain. The details of captains and supercargoes and the record of the sheer volume of trade which attended the growth of the largest company the world has ever known - the Honourable East India Company - provide a reliable and accurate backdrop to many other events in the 18th Century. This also enables researchers to use the evidence of heraldry and the 1,980 illustrations (all but 100 in colour) to date many stylistic changes of porcelain in a way which, because of the lack Chinese records of the export trade, would not otherwise be possible. Publication of the first volume led to a reassessment of the scale of this specialist porcelain trade which was handled, almost exclusively, by private traders working with framework of the East India Company. Details of what these merchants purchased are not recorded in the India Office Library and it is only possible to gauge their influence on trade and decorative etiquette in Europe by studying what they brought home - some 12,000 miles by sea - at a time when travel was far less certain than it is today. The chapters in this book explain not only the natural but also the political risks of trading in the 18th Century. To many, this volume will provide the moment when the identity of a piece of porcelain is revealed. With the growing western familiarity with Chinese script it seemed possible about 1900 to start the business of classification seriously. This was in the west chiefly a study of the apparently capricious forging of export porcelains which commonly bore not the reign-names but the names of earlier famous Emperors in whose reigns they might have been made but in fact were not. This fact was not appreciated by the western purchaser and eventually a wave of optimism began to rise and wares with Ming marks began to be accepted as of the Dynasty or reign. But so great a quantity of Chinese porcelain was being imported, most of it still bearing a Ming reign-mark, that it has taken nearly a century to discredit its marking. What was 'Ming' is still Ming; the name has become a 'household word' for old Chinese porcelain in general. This thesis is devoted to the study of Qing ceramics from the reign of Daoguang (1821.1850) to the reign of Xuantong (1909-1911), covering a period of approximately ninety years. During this period, the ceramic art of China was dominated by the work of the Imperial Porcelain Factory. This Factory was responsible for the production of practically all the ceramic wares required by the imperial court. The Imperial Porcelain Factory of the late Qing period, or the "Imperial Kilns" as it was commonly called, was located in Jingdezhen, near Zhushan. Two versions of the annual production catalogues of the Factory are available today. One belongs to the reign of Tongzhi (1862-1874) and the other one belongs to the reign of Guangxu (1875-1908). Items mentioned in these two catalogues have been almost completely identified and are illustrated in this thesis. Ceramic wares produced by the Imperial Factory, that is, the imperial wares, may be classified into these main categories, ritual vessels, domestic wares and special items. Designs for all these wares were prepared at the imperial palace under the direct control of the Emperor and the Department of Works. Drawings and wooden models were made in Beijing and sent to Jingdezhen from time to time. Sample pieces were made by the Factory and returned to the palace for approval and ordering. The Imperial Porcelain Factory of the late Qing period was a fully equipped establishment of producing ceramic wares from the raw clay stage to the fully decorated city bodies ready for firing. However, the actual work of the firing on a consignment basis. Firing kilns for these wares were the egg-shaped kilns of Jingdezhen and the firing material was the wood of pine trees. Decoration and design of the Imperial wares of late Qing were substantially based on the designs of the Ming and early Qing period. However, there were other innovative designs and decorative techniques developed during this period. Finally, almost every one of the imperial wares of this period carries an imperial mark. As these marks are identifiable as being written by a very limited number of mark-writers at the Factory, they serve as an important guide for the authentication of the Imperial porcelain wares of the late Qing dynasty. When it first appeared in the fourteenth century Chinese connoisseurs ahd regarded it as vulgar and garish, and a hundred years later, after receiving immense Imperial patronage during the Xuande reign, was the victim of an austere puritanical reaction. Since the Chenghua reign later in the fifteenth century, however, "blue and white" has gone from strengh, and in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries had an immense effect on porcelain production in the West. In this new history, the author traces the history of "blue and white" from its uncertain beginnings to the end of the Qing Dynasty. Considerable attention is also paid throughout to social and political events so that the reader can see something of the purely "human" conditions that were contemporary with the production of the porcelain.
