DONNELLY, P.J.
Blanc de Chine: The Porcelain of Têhua in Fukien
Faber and Faber Limited, London. 1969, 1st Edition. Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 407 pages plus appendix with 160 black and white plates; 17 x 25.7 cm; 1.229 Kg; SBN 571 08078 2; Used book with signs of wear on the dust jacket. Minor signs of wear on the interior, which looks as new. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover.; REFERENCE BOOK ON BLANC DE CHINE; Blanc de chine, the white porcelain of Têhua in fukien, has waited long for its chronicler. This most beautiful of porcelains, satisfying entirely by form and glaze, so elusive to date, enjoys wide appeal. But collectors and others interested have up to now had to rest content with a page or so of general praise and description in the standard works on Chinese ceramics, for there has been no complete book on this subject. This deficiency is now made good. The author, with the advantage of an unrivalled collection of the ware itself, has devoted years of research into sources, Chinese and Western, the fruits of which are now available. The evidence for dating-textual, from marks and inscriptions and, above all, from recorded acquisitions - is given in detail. More than 500 pieces are illustrated, indicative of the unparalleled variety of form which blanc de Chine can assume. Marks hitherto thought undecipherable are studied, and nearly a hundred reproduced in facsimile. Potters and potter families have been discovered, and their work is discussed. There is a chapter also on the coloured ware of these kilns, including the little-know blue and white. Some original Chinese sources are appended, together with an account of recent archaeological investigation of the kiln sites and an abstract of the original inventory of Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony, now at Dresden, contained innumerable pieces of blanc de Chine. Good/Dust Jacket Included.

The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover.; This third edition contains a new preface which summarizes the advances in knowledge that have taken place since the first and second editions were printed. Reviews from previous editions: "The book is written carefully and readably, with ample references for statements and quotations, and the hundred plates show examples of all periods, including productions from Japanese, Korean and Chinese provincial factories. Whoever has a collection of Oriental blue-and-white porcelain, or contemplates the formation of one, can have no better guide than this volume". from Apollo.; "Packed with information. The treatment is historical but special sections deal with the provincial or export types, and with the evidence for dating to be obtained on one hand from inscriptions and on the other hand from technical characteristics. Indeed, the work is to be specially commended for the clarity and precision of the remarks on the materials and processes used in the manufacture of the porcelains discussed, and of the effects visible in the different wares." from Connoisseur.; From a review of the third edition: "No student of the applied arts of China can afford to let this edition pass by; it stands in as important a position now as did the first edition 17 years ago. Would that all specialists in this controversial field could view their work so dispassionately and comment with such profit." GODDEN, GEOFFREY A.
Oriental Export Market Porcelain and Its Influence on European Wares
Granada Publishing Limited, London. 1979, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0246110570). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 22.2 x 24.2 cm, 1.462 Kg; 384 pages with colour and black and white illustrations; Dust jacket wrapped in a permanent adhesive cover, showing signs of wear. The dust jacket is price clipped. Signed by the author on front free endpaper. The interior of the book is in good condition.; Geoffrey Godden is widely celebrated for his knowledge of English ceramics but in the course of his distinguished career he has handled as much Chinese porcelain as English. He is therefore ideally qualified to present this definitive account of the wares made by eighteen-century Chinese potters for the European market, particularly as he stresses the close interplay between Oriental and European ceramics. His research on the subject has been exceptionally wide-ranging, and the majority of resources quoted in this volume are published here for the first time. They include extracts from the English East India Company records, ship's logs of the "East Indiamen" who carried on the trade and the results of the many china-wares sales held in London. There is a chapter on Japanese wares, for in the early eighteen century, nearly as much Japanese as Chinese porcelain was imported. There is also a section on the American trade in Oriental export porcelain. The extensive and carefully chosen illustrations combined with the authoritative and sometimes challenging text make this an invaluable book for collectors and students of porcelain. Good/Dust Jacket Included. Signed by Author(s).

Ming Porcelain
Rizolli International Publications, Inc. New York. 1978. (ISBN: 0847801810). Hardcover. Book, English text; Hardcover (cloth with dust jacket in slipcase); 29 x 33.5 cm; 2.9 Kg; 292 pages with 324 black and white and colour illustrations.; Used book in very good condition with minor signs of wear. The interior is in very good condition. The dust jacket is now protected with a clearcover.; Translated from the French by Katherine Watson.; A magnificent book by the chargée de mission at the Guimet Museum in Paris on the most exquisite form of pottery: Ming porcelain. Highlighted by hundreds of first-rate reproductions, drawings of emblems, symbols and potter's marks, it traces the origins of this art from 1368, the year the Ming Dynasty was founded, and the great Imperial porcelain factory of Ching-tê Chên was built. For almost three centuries Ching-tê Chên remained the prestigious pottery center in China, causing the decline of the celadon green ceramics of the Sung Dynasty. The new master potters developed a distinct style that was once colorful and severe, meticulous and extraordinarily inventive. They excelled in both under-glazed and over-glaze patterns and designs that became legendary in their own time. But perhaps the most precious of all Ming porcelain art was the 'eggshell" wares which the Chinese called "bodiless" because of their almost ethereal thinness. A chronological table, a bibliography, a glossary of Chinese terms and an index complete this brilliant survey of a major Chinese art form, and a triumph of modern bookmaking. Very Good/No Jacket.

GOMPERTZ, G.ST.G.M.
Chinese Celadon Wares
Faber and Faber Limited, London. 1980, 2nd Edition. (ISBN: 0571180035). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dustjacket); 216 pages with black and white and also some colour illustrations; 16.4 x 25.6 cm; 0.592 Kg; Used book in good condition. The dust jacket is price clipped and protected with a clearcover. The rear of the dust jacket front cover has some pen marks.; Celadon is the name given to ceramic wares of a distinctive green or blue-green colour. Such wares have been made in China for about two thousand years and include some of the most admired and famous types. They have been described as the "backbone" of Oriental ceramics and were exported from China in vast quantities from the twelfth century onwards, relics of this trade being found in many Eastern countries, especially India, Persia, Turkey, and Egypt. Godfrey Gompertz's widely acclaimed book broke much fresh ground when it originally appeared, in particular in its use of contemporary Chinese and Japanese studies. He has now brought it completely up to date for this new edition, and has incorporated the results of many years' researches and of recent archaeological excavations in China. Several chapters have been rewritten, forty-six new black and white illustrations and six new colour plates have been added, and the bibliography has been expanded.; "..A much needed survey of the subject as a whole - scholarly yet readable, and the first of its kind in the West, which will be welcomed by collectors and students alike..an uncommonly valuable synthesis of up-to-date opinion and research. No less to be recommended are its excellent illustrations among which are pieces drawn from collections in every part of the world.." John Ayers in Apollo (review of the first edition). HETHERINGTON, A.L.; HOBSON, R.L. (INTRODUCTION)
The Early Ceramic Wares of China
London: Benn Brothers, Limited. 1922, 1st Edition. Hardcover. Book, English text; Hardcover (brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine and gold motifs on the front cover); 23.5 x 29.5 cm; 1.8 Kg; 26 pages with preface, introduction, contents and list of plates plus 160 pages with 100 illustrations of which 12 are in colour with original tissue guards.; Edgeworn. Signs of wear on the front cover, spine and back cover. The interior is in good condition with minor signs of wear.; "The object of this book is to put before those interested in the early Chinese wares, information which will be of service to them at different stages of their collecting. I have given expression to a feeling that has always possessed me during my studies of the subject, and that is the necessity of a general understanding of the history of the country if a proper conception of its art is to be obtained. For this reason I have occupied some space in setting out, in the early section of the book, the main features which mark the various dynastic epochs: I fancy that, if the historical facts there described are kept in mind, the collector will find much less difficulty in unravelling the ceramic problems which confront him. In selecting the illustrations I have followed a somewhat unusual course. The specimens chosen, with one or two exceptions, are not the rarest and most costly examples, nor are they taken from the great National Museums. I have illustrated typical pieces of good quality in the possession of private collectors. The ordinary person, in my opinion, wants to see the kind of thing he may hope to acquire for himself. For convenience the half-tone plates have been grouped at the end of the chapters to which they relate. In each case the name of the collector to whom the specimen belongs is named. " excerpt from the preface by A.L. Hetherington, February, 1922. Good/No Jacket.

NEAVE-HILL, W.B.R.; GARNER, HARRY SIR (FOREWORD)
Chinese Ceramics
John Bartholomew & Son Limited, Edinburgh&London. 1975, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0702810215). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (cloth with dust jacket); 21.8 x 30.6 cm; 0.876 Kg; 176 pages with black and white and colour illustrations.; Used book in good condition with signs of wear in the dust jacket, minor signs of wear in text and the author signature glued to the copyright page. Dust jacket now protected with a clearcover. INCLUDES LOOSE LETTER HANDWRITTEN BY THE AUTHOR DATED FROM 1975; In Chinese Ceramics the author has summarised the main features of Chinese Ceramic development from the Neolithic pottery of 2000 B.C. to the enamelled porcelain of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. If there is any special emphasis, it lies in the very full treatment of the beautiful monochrome wares of the Sung Dynasty, a subject which the author has specially studied. The Sung dynasty is rightly regarded as the classical age of Chinese ceramics, and the Sung Wares, often undecorated and relying entirely on form, colour, and texture for their appeal, are supreme achievements of the potter's art. But the earlier less sophisticated and the later highly decorative wares all have their masterpieces, many of which are described and illustrated in this book. Throughout Chinese history foreign influence has had a decisive effect on the arts. Sometimes this influence has been a by-product of Chinese imperialism, sometimes a result of foreign incursion; but in neither case have the influences engulfed the native Chinese Art. To understand these influences some knowledge of Chinese is desirable. The author, as a professional historian, is well able to deal with this problem and a valuable feature of the book is the setting of the ceramics of each period against their historical background. Good/Good.

The first twelve chapters are occupied almost exclusively by the porcelain of Ching-tê Chên; the next four by the porcelain and pottery made at other centres. HONEY, WILLIAM BOWYER
The Ceramic Art of China and Other Countries of the Far East
Faber and Faber Limited, London. 1954, 4th Edition. Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover (with dust jacket); 20.5 x 26 cm; 1.365 Kg; 238 pages plus appendix with 192 plates from China, Indo-China, Corea and Japan (monochrome reproductions and 3 plates in colour). Fourth impression.; Ex-library with signs of wear. Library stamp on the rear of the front cover. Tears and wear marks on the dust jacket, that is now protected with a clearcover. The interior is in good condition, with minor signs of wear.; This finely illustrated book is the first full general survey of the whole field of Chinese ceramics since R.L. Hobson's two-volume work published in 1915. It is primarily concerned with the art of the potter, and historical and archaeological matters are touched upon only so far as they concern the special interests of the connoisseur. The Chinese have always shown a particular regard for pottery, and this book is an anthology of some of their most beautiful productions, explaining their historical sequence and the varying ideals shown in this characteristic branch of Chinese art. It covers, moreover, the important related wares of Corea, Japan and Indo-China, reviewing their special artistic achievements in a broad way hardly attempted before. It is a general account, written in a lucid style and intelligible to the ordinary reader, but it also includes a discussion of controversial questions, such as the origin of glazed stoneware and porcelain, and the identification of the classical Sung and early Ming wares, with references to all the existing and most recent literature. Chapters on marks, forgeries, shapes, and the subjects of the decoration are added in appendices. "An authoritative work that will find a place in all ceramic libraries for many years to come, and an exhilarating one for collectors as well as an inspiration for all directly concerned with pottery making. The book is a work of art that will be appreciated by all creative artists." excerpt from the review by Studio. Good/Dust Jacket Included.

HOWARD, DAVID SANCTUARY
Chinese Armorial Porcelain: Volume II
Heirloom & Howard Limited, England. 2003, 1st Edition. (ISBN: 0954438914). Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, English text; Hardcover leather bound in red morocco with dust jacket in slipcase (LIMITED EDITION of 200 COPIES); 23.5 x 30.3 cm; 4.316 Kg; 904 pages with 1,880 colour illustrations, 1,500 armorial services described; STILL WRAPPED IN PLASTIC.; Foreword by Peter Ll. Gwynn-Jones, CVO, Garter Principal King of Arms.; In 1974 Faber & Faber published Chinese Armorial Porcelain which has remained the most comprehensive book on the subject. At that time David Howard did not anticipate the need for a second volume; however, continued research has resulted in this book which illustrates 1,380 services not illustrated in Volume I, in addition to the 160 services which formed the addendum to that volume. The material in Chinese Armorial Porcelain Volume II is almost entirely additional to the first volume, containing a new introduction and four new chapters on aspects of the China Trade. All the appendices are revised and extended and the index of mottoes and index of services cover both volumes (the later containing an alphabetical list of over 4,000 services - more than 3,320 illustrated and 680 unillustrated - all made for the British or American market). This is an essential companion for those who own the first volume but this book certainly stands on its own and, as Garter King of Arms writes in the foreword, 'is an astounding work - destined to be a major reference source in the future'. While the book relies heavily on the evidence of armorials and their ability to date, sometimes to the exact year, when a service was made, it also throws extra light on to the whole China Trade which was an integral part of the commercial success of the 18th Century Britain. The details of captains and supercargoes and the record of the sheer volume of trade which attended the growth of the largest company the world has ever known - the Honourable East India Company - provide a reliable and accurate backdrop to many other events in the 18th Century. This also enables researchers to use the evidence of heraldry and the 1,980 illustrations (all but 100 in colour) to date many stylistic changes of porcelain in a way which, because of the lack Chinese records of the export trade, would not otherwise be possible. Publication of the first volume led to a reassessment of the scale of this specialist porcelain trade which was handled, almost exclusively, by private traders working with framework of the East India Company. Details of what these merchants purchased are not recorded in the India Office Library and it is only possible to gauge their influence on trade and decorative etiquette in Europe by studying what they brought home - some 12,000 miles by sea - at a time when travel was far less certain than it is today. The chapters in this book explain not only the natural but also the political risks of trading in the 18th Century. To many, this volume will provide the moment when the identity of a piece of porcelain is revealed. While the book, with its considerable index of mottoes and cross-references to both volumes, will fulfill that need, in his foreword Garter King of Arms concludes, 'Unlike so many works on an esoteric subject, this had the aesthetic combined with the heraldic and genealogical to ensure a wider base of popular support - from the connoisseur to the armorist and from the collector of works of art to the social historian.'.;Containing: Introduction and four illustrated chapters on aspects of the China Trade: 1.Reflections, Replacements, Reproductions and Revival, 2.Of Counters, Carriages and Bookplates, 3.Armorial Porcelain for Scotland and the role of the Swedish East India Company, 4.Chinese Armorial Porcelain: The Market during the last Century and in the Future and The Laws of Blazon, a chapter on understanding heraldry. Together with a comprehensive analysis and classification of styles and dates of armorial porcelain.General Index and 50-page comprehensive Index of Services. New/Dust Jacket Included.
