Laurent de Brunhoff
Babar's Picnic
New York, Random House, Inc, 1949. First American Edition, 1st Printing. Hardcover. 40p. Oversize. A hardcover book with a blue cloth spine and pictorial boards. Good condition overall. Edges of boards rubbed, most heavily at the corners. Bottom of spine is quite worn; a few small slits and nicks in the cloth further up the spine. Dampstaining at top and bottom edges, seeping into the gutter and causing a few pages to start tearing. However, the pages remain securely enough attached for reading purposes and, apart from some age-toning, are clean. The first American edition of this Babar the Elephant book, now regarded as controversial due to its depiction of African natives. This is the true first American printing; this title is not listed on the copyright page under "Other Babar Books." Measures approx. 14.5" x 10.25. Good .

Eric Carle, Aesop's Fables for Modern Readers
Eric Carle
Aesop's Fables for Modern Readers
Mount Vernon NY, Peter Pauper Press, 1965. 1st Edition. Hardcover. FIRST PRINTING OF THIS EDITION WITH ILLUSTRATIONS BY ERIC CARLE. THE FIRST BOOK IN WHICH CARLE USED HIS DISTINCTIVE COLLAGE STYLE OF ILLUSTRATION. Hardcover book and dustjacket in good to very good condition. The book is clean, tuight, and unmarked save for a mark on pp. 16-19 where an old paper clip left an indentation. The jacket has mild shelfwear plus a one-inch closed tear along the right edge of the front cover. The jacket is safely enclosed in a removable protective mylar cover. An early work by Carle which was published before he became famous for his children's books BROWN BEAR and THE VERY HUNGRY CATERPILLAR. Carle began illustrating books in the late 1950s including dustjacket art for several science fiction novels. His first children's books are beginning books about science and math and are illustrated in a classic style with straight lines. With this edition of Aesop, we see the first example of his use of animal motifs and the collage artistic style for which he became famous. Various online sources claim Carle's 1967 book BROWN BEAR as his first illutrsated book, a claim which is simply wrong. In fact, this edition of Aesop is the first example of Carle's animal illustrations. This is an uncommon edition whiuch is seldom found in collectible condition. .
