Bandurak, Volodymyr; [Illustrated by] Butovych, Mykola
Kozatska Dytyna. Opovidannia Z Kozatskoi Buvalshchyny (the Child of the Kozaks. Historical Sketch for Children... )
Dzherzi Syti / Niu Iork (Jersey City / New York), Vydannia Ukrainskoho Narodnoho Soiuzu, 1955. First Edition. First edition; 8 1/4 x 5 3/4; pp. [2], 5-31, [1]; beige, pictorial wraps, decorated in black and blue; title in Ukrainian and English on facing pages; illustrated with numerous black and white drawings; a small manuscript number to back wrap; light wear to tips of spine and corners; in very good to near fine condition. Volodymyr Bandurak (1915 - 1982) was a Ukrainian author, educator, and public activist - well known for his essays, short stories, and tales for children, although he arguably gained his biggest fame for his work on Lenin's visit to the Tatras. Initially, enthusiastically greeted by the Party, the story would later be ridiculed and dismissed for "containing too many fictional moments." The illustrator of the current book, Mykola Butovych (1895 - 1961), was a renowned Ukrainian graphic designer, artist, memoirist, and author. After serving in the Cossack Division of the Ukrainian People's Republic (UNR) and teaching in Nazi-occupied Lviv, he emigrated to the US in 1948, where he was a member of the Association of Ukrainian Artists in America, wrote memoirs and collections of epigrams, and participated in numerous art exhibitions. Very good .

Barnes, J. V.
A Collection of Lucite, Nursery-Rhymes Tiles
S. l. J. V. Barnes, 1948. Forty-three square, lucite tiles in pink, several shades of blue, yellow, orange, several shades of green, white, and beige, for a total of 11 designs and variations of each other; 4 1/4 x 4 1/4; illustrations and text stamped in contrasting ink; many with manufacturer's name and date to lower right corner; a few with small holes to upper margin (for hanging); most with minor scratches and wear, a few with smudges to edges and to a few of the letters; in very good or better condition. Produced by an elusive manufacturer, the tiles were most probably designed to be displayed in classrooms or children's playrooms, to teach kids the words of popular nursery rhymes. Most featured an open-ended part of a verse, e.g. "Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall, Humpty Dumpty had a great.." and a few just contained an entertaining illustration and a title with historiated letters, for example: "The Goose Book," with anthropomorphic eggs for the letter "O." Not in the trade (as of August 2020). Very good .
