BERINGTON (Joseph):
Reflections addressed to The Rev. John Hawkins. To which is added, An Exposition of Roman Catholic Principles, in reference to God and the Country.
Birmingham: Printed by M. Swinney; for T. Booker..., London, 1785. Bernard" on the front paste-down end-paper; ex-library, with library stamp on verso of title-page. The Roman Catholic priest Joseph Berington (1743–1827) is best-known for his The State and Behaviour of English Catholics from the Reformation to the Year 1780, in which he wrote that if "certain obstacles [were] removed, such as the views of interest, the animosity of party, the blindness of prejudice, and those thick clouds which controversy has raised, it would then appear, that the Protestant Church of England and Catholics are divided by very thin partitions." In that work, as well as the present one, he set out a programme of reform and toleration for Roman Catholics. ESTC T149882 locates 13 copies in these islands and three in North America: NYPL, Newbery, University of Texas.

JACKSON (Thomas):
A Treatise of the Holy Catholike Faith and Church. Divided into three Bookes. The first Booke.
London, Printed by M. F. for John Clarke..., 1627. FIRST EDITION. Small 4to, 177 x 127 mms., pp. [xxiv], 206, contemporary vellum, with title in ink on spine; stab-holes visible at inner margin, text slightly cracked at F4, vellum soiled. With the pencil inscription "G. Woodfield/ Newton/ Near Rugley/ March 29th 1931" on the front paste-down end-paper, ink inscription "Josias Docakray 18 April/ 1669" on top margin of title-page and on verso of title-page, "Will. Ross Book/Anno: dom 1684." Jackson (1579 - 1640) published this as Book 12 of his commentaries on the Apostles Creed; parts two and three were published posthumously in his collected works. He began the commentaries in 1613. In the address to the reader he records that the book was written for students in Pembroke College, Oxford, at the request of the master. Jackson was a neo-Platonist, notable both for his opposition to the doctrine of transubstantiation and to the views of John Calvin. The recent work of scholars such as Sarah Hutton, David William Dockrill, and James Bryson shows a resurgence of interest in Jackson's philosophical Platonism. See, for instance, Bryson's full-length study, The Christian Platonism of Thomas Jackson (2016), about which this has been said: "Although Thomas Jackson (1579-1640) is recognized by scholars as the most important theologian of the Laudian church, hitherto there has been no comprehensive study of his philosophical theology. The reason for Jackson's neglect is that scholars have been puzzled by the sources, character and influence of his Christian Platonism. From a close and comprehensive reading of his magnum opus … this book shows how Jackson regards the Platonic tradition as an essential and perennial resource for the Christian theologian, anticipating and informing central aspects of Christian theological speculation and belief" (). STC (2nd ed.), 14319.

LA PAILLONNE (Marie Odiot de):
Le Lys. par la Révérende Mère M. D. L. C. de l'Ordre de Prémonté.
Lille, Société de SaintAugustin, Desclée, De Brouwer et Cie. 1888. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. Small 8vo, 142 x 87 mms., pp. [vi], 152 [153 Errata, 154 blank], steel-engraved frontispiece and 6 other full-page engraved plates, including half-title, attractively bound in full embossed silk, with fleur-de-lys decorations in gold thread, floral end-papers; slight wear to corners and very slight soiling of binding, but generally a very good to fine copy of a very uncommon book, with a contemporary but slightly illegible inscription on the recto of the front free end-paper: "Milles de remerciement je vous ecrire & je suis [two words?] chargé le besoigne/ Me. B de Geises." Marie Odiot de la Paillonne, later known , sometimes by her religious name Marie de la Croix (1840 - 1905) was a writer, an abbess, and a founder of the community of female practitioners of the radical Norbertine order of Catholics in Bonlieu, France. Goovaerts presumably saw a copy of the book, although he could have transcribed the entry from a library record. There is a full-length study of La Pallionne: Dominque-Mariet Dauzet Marie Odiot de la Pallionne, Fondatrice des Norbertines de Bonlieu (Drome), 1804 - 1905 (2001). One copy located in OCLC, at the Abdijbibliotheek Tongerlo.
