Hardcover. pp. IV, 178.4to,,,This is an original copy of the brief submitted to the Canadian Royal Commission established to inquire 'into the disabilities under which the Maritime Provinces are labouring within Confederation'. There is a preliminary typed letter of transmittal, inserted before the text begins, which reminds readers that 'Confederation was not sought by the Maritime Provinces, but that an appeal had been made to them to join the movement, primarily for the benefit of Quebec and Ontario, then united as the Province of Canada..' The Royal Commission was established in 1926 by Prime Minister MacKenzie King and was chaired by British businessman Sir Andrew Rae Duncan. Its mandate was to 'examine 'from a national standpoint..all the factors which peculiarly affect the economic position' of the Maritime Provinces and to make 'recommendations to alleviate such grievances' as might exist.' This copy has stamped on the title page 'Booksale Discard' and 'Victoria Public Library'. There is also a 'warning' label affixed to the front free endpaper cautioning against defacing the book. This submission was, quite some years in the past (probably in the 1920s) bound in hard covers with the original printed cover laid on top and with a hand-titled spine. The contents are unmarked and the binding remains tight. .
