Statement of the Hudson's Bay Company, 1857
[London], Printed by Henry Kenty Casuton, Nag's Head Court, Gracechurch Street, 1857. Paperback. pp. 13. Folio. Original sewn blue covers. Light edgewear, occasional chips and short closed tears along edges. The covers are detached from the string binding, however, they remain intact and in very good condition. Overall, very good. A scarce document relating to the origins of the Hudson's Bay Company. A chronological account examining the history of the Hudson's Bay Company in short statements originating with it's charter as issued by King Charles the Second in 1670 up to 1853. The statements are accompanied with large bold dates along the margins. The initial statement reads as follows: 'By a charter of King Charles the Second, dated May 3, A.D. 1670, the Hudson's Bay Company was incorporated by the name of "The Governor and Company of Adventurers of England Trading Into Hudson's Bay". Many rights and privileges were granted by this Charter, the two most important rights being those given in the following words: "We have given, granted, and confirmed, for Us, our Heirs and Successors, do give, grant and confirm unto said Governor and Company and their Successors, the sole Trade and Commerce of all those Seas, Straits, Bays, Rivers, Lakes, Creeks and Sounds, in whatsoever latitude they shall be, the lie within the entrance to the Straits called Hudson's Straits, together with all the lands and territories upon the countries, coasts and confines of the Seas, Bays, Lakes, Rivers, Creeks and Sounds aforesaid, that are not already actually possessed by or granted to any of our Subjects, or possessed by the Subjects of any other Christian Prince or State". No indication of the title in PEEL, Sabin, or any copies currently housed at Library and Archives Canada. .
