"The Revolution of 1934, also known as the Revolution of October 1934 or the Revolutionary General Strike of 1934, was a revolutionary strike movement that took place between 5 and 19 October 1934, during the black biennium of the Second Spanish Republic. The revolts were triggered by the entry of the conservative Spanish Confederation of the Autonomous Right (CEDA) into the Spanish government. Most of the events occurred in Catalonia and Asturias and were supported by many Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) and General Union of Workers (UGT) members, notably Largo Caballero, as well as members of the Confederación Nacional del Trabajo (CNT). Historians have argued that the incident sharpened antagonism between the political Right and Left in Spain and was part of the reason for the later Spanish Civil War. Around 2,000 people were killed during the uprising, which was repressed by Spanish government forces." (from Wikipedia) ; Signed by Author. Very Good+ in Very Good+ dust jacket .

SOUDER, MRS. EDMUND A.

B&W Illustrations; This book is in Very Good- condition and was likely issued without a dust jacket. The book and its contents are in generally clean, bright condition. The spine ends, corners and edges of the book covers have noticeable rubbing, bumping and fraying. The top front spine joint has cracked and been repaired (approx. 3" in length) . There's also a small hole chipped from the bottom spine of the book cover. The text pages are clean and bright. There is a previous owner's inked gift notation on the front endpaper. The rear pastedown page includes a tipped-in newspaper that mentions this book. "Within days of the battle of Gettysburg, Mrs. Edmund Souder made her way to the site to do what she could to assist the wounded and dying in a field hospital. What she found was profoundly disturbing to her and she afterwards gathered this series of letters she wrote from Gettysburg. It is impossible from this place in time to understand how terribly anxious the country about the outcome of the battle while it was still raging. Mrs. Souder shares her feelings with us about those awful days. She recounts extraordinary courage she witnessed among the shattered and dying men during her time in the field. She helped to care for Union and Confederate soldiers, for whom they cared "as suffering men and not as rebels." " (from Barnes & Noble book review). Very Good- .

"Virginia Clay-Clopton (1825–1915) was a political hostess and activist in Alabama and Washington, D. C. She was also known as Virginia Tunstall, Virginia Clay, and Mrs. Clement Claiborne Clay. She took on different responsibilities after the Civil War. As the wife of US Senator Clement Claiborne Clay from Alabama, she was part of a group of young southerners who boarded together in the capital in particular hotels. In the immediate postwar period, she worked to gain her husband's freedom from imprisonment at Fort Monroe, where Jefferson Davis, former president of the Confederacy, was also held. In the late 19th century, Clay-Copton (who remarried after her first husband died) became an activist in the United Daughters of the Confederacy, a group established after the Civil War that was instrumental in shaping public discussions about the war and role of the South. She worked to raise funds for Confederate cemeteries and memorials. She also worked for women's suffrage. Clay-Copton was one of a number of Southern women to publish her memoir at the turn of the 20th century; these women's accounts became part of the public discourse about the war. "(from Wikipedia).
