The Portrait of a Man As Governor
New York, The Macmillan Company, 1928. First edition. Hardcover. pp. 38. 12mo. Boards show some soiling and corners are a bit bumped. binding tight, contents unmarked. A good plus, to very good, copy. This is a unique copy of this book, as it is inscribed by George Foster Peabody (1852-1930, who wrote the forword). The award recognizes distinguished and meritorious public service by American radio and television stations, networks, online media, producing organizations, and individuals. The book is inscribed to Edward Bemis and is dated June, 1928, Saratoga Springs (probably Edward Webster Bemis [1860-1930] the American economist and a public utility expert. Dies, Edward Jerome, The Wheat Pit
Dies, Edward Jerome
The Wheat Pit
Chicago, IL, Argyle Press, 1925. Hardcover. pp. 63. Slim 8vo. Our copy of 'The Wheat Pit' is bound in the original green paper over boards, lettered and ruled in black. With a black-and-white photo frontispiece showing 'the pit' in action. The binding is slightly cracked at the title page, otherwise the book is in very good condition. The dust jacket is present, showing the original printed price. It is slightly creased along the top edge, very slightly chipped and rubbed, faint rubber-stamped name to the front panel; very good condition. Dies was born in Springfield, Oregon, in 1891. His first book was 'The Wheat Pit', published in November, 1925, and reprinted later the same month (our copy is one of the latter). Dies specialized in the writing of non-fiction and fiction books dealing mainly with 'big business', and the buying and selling of commodities. His 1935 title, 'Street of Adventure' is one of the scarcest, and most sought-after, business books of the 20th century. Dies wrote 'The Wheat Pit' in 1925, and followed it up in 1929 with a novel entitled 'The Plunger - A Tale of the Wheat Pit'. .
