Trees of Life
Head of Zeus 2019 256, 100 col illus. 296x228mm. HB. NEW. . A captivatingly informative and visually beautiful survey of the tree species - from all over the world - that human cultures have found most useful. Each tree species is the subject of a concise text centred on a story - or stories - about the tree in question, and is depicted by means of a photograph, painting or other aesthetic artefact. The species will be organized thematically according to the virtues they impart, be that in the form of timber, nuts, fruit or medicine. The bloodwood tree, a native of central America, is a tree that made a nation. Its wood produces a brilliant and lucrative bright red dye and was imported to Europe for use in dyeing fabrics. The 17th and 18th-century logging camps established by the British later became the modern nation of Belize, and the bloodwood tree appears on its national flag. From the bloodwood to the breadfruit and from the cinchona to the peach, these are trees that offer not merely shelter, timber and fuel but also medicines, dyes, foods and fibres. They are very special trees, and Max Adams, author of The Wisdom of Trees, has a plethora of such fascinating stories to tell about them.. [9781789541427]

Wood Anatomy of Eastern Mediterranean Species
Verlag Kessel 2012 310, 180 col + b/w photos, distribution maps. . PB. NEW. . The eastern Mediterranean Basin has a rich woody flora including Mediterranean-type vegetation and locally mesomorphic woody taxa. The wood anatomy of these taxa is crucially important to understand their nature and formation. Wood anatomy is also important in the Old World because of having wooden parts in archaeological sites.A few wood anatomy books including the species of the eastern Mediterranean basin have been published. Wood Anatomy of Eastern Mediterranean Species aims to make a contribution to the wood anatomy world by presenting the wood anatomical characteristics of some species of the eastern Mediterranean basin, mainly of Turkey. Anatomical features are given together with some main results of the relating studies here. 106 species from 67 genera from mainly the Mediterranean region of Turkey are included in this book. Also includes IAWA (International Associate of Wood Anatomists) Index for each species, and an identification key for the 67 genera to help in the identification of the woods from this region.. WCA Survey pack (Woodland Condition Assessment): (Identification Charts)
Field Studies Council 2024 , col illus, col photos. A4. Chart. NEW. . How valuable is your woodland for wildlife? The Woodland Condition Assessment (WCA) will help you assess your woodland’s condition in a standardised way. Carrying out the assessment is straightforward, and anyone can do it. You do not need any special equipment. The WCA Survey pack contains everything you need to complete the Woodland Condition Assessment:Woodland trees and shrubs guide (WCA1)Use the guide’s straightforward flow chart for speedy tree identification. Almost 100 different trees and shrubs are named in the WCA record sheets. Want to tell apart beech and hornbeam? Maple and sycamore? Spruces and firs? Simple yes/no questions will quickly guide you to the colour illustrations for each tree. In addition there is a photo guide to the buds and bark of the commoner trees in winter.Woodland ground vegetation guide (WCA2)Recognising woodland ground vegetation is an important part of the WCA. This guide will help you work out how natural the ground vegetation is in your area of woodland. Also includes a reference guide to the indicator plants of ancient woodland.Tree pests and diseases guide (WCA3)Illustrating the symptoms of ill health in trees. Unlike many similar guides, we assume no previous knowledge of pests and diseases. Instead it lists the three major parts of the tree to check: canopy, trunk and roots. From crown dieback and cankers to epicormic growth and resin bleeds, each symptom includes photographs and concise descriptions.Woodland indicators guide (WCA4)Take this guide outside with you to help you to collect information on the 15 different woodland indicators.Woodland Condition Assesssment booklet (WCA5)An A4 booklet containing detailed instructions on the survey, photocopiable paper recording forms, and a full list of condition indicators. In autumn 2023 we asked WCA surveyors what they needed to help them carry out the survey themselves. Many owners and managers of woodland asked for help with identifying trees and wild flowers. Others were keen to spot the signs of tree pests and diseases. As one of the UK’s leading publishers of nature guides, Field Studies Council was only too glad to help! The guides in this pack have been specially developed to support the WCA survey, and are all enclosed in a handy folder. The WCA pack has been co-created with Forestry Commission, Natural England and Sylva Foundation..

Barnes, G.; Williamson, T.
English Orchards: A Landscape History
Oxbow Books 2022 224, b/w + col illus. 246x185mm. PB. NEW. . Old orchards have an irresistible appeal. Their ancient trees and obscure fruit varieties seem to provide a direct link with the lost rural world of our ancestors, a time when the pace of life was slower and people had a strong and intimate connection with their local environment. They are also of critical importance for sustaining biodiversity, providing habitats, in particular, for a range of rare invertebrates. Not surprisingly, orchards and the fruit they contain have attracted an increasing amount of attention over the last few decades, from both enthusiastic bands of amateurs and official conservation bodies. But much of what has been written about them is historically vague, romanticised and nostalgic. Orchards have become a symbol of unspoilt, picturesque rural England. This book attempts, for the first time, to provide a comprehensive review of the development of orchards in England from the Middle Ages to the present day. It describes the various different kinds of orchard and explains how, and when, they appeared in the landscape – and why they have disappeared, at a catastrophic rate, over the last six decades. Chapters discuss the contrasting histories of fruit growing in different regions of England, the complex story of 'traditional' fruit varieties and the role of orchards in wildlife conservation. In addition, a chapter on researching orchards provides a practical guide for those wishing to investigate the history and archaeology of particular examples.. [9781914427190]

The Oak Papers
Canongate Books Ltd 2020 256, . 220x144mm. HB. NEW. . A BBC Radio 4 Book of the Week described by Peter Wohlleben as 'a profound meditation on the human need for connection with nature'.The author spent two years sitting with and studying the Honywood Oak. A colossus of a tree, it would have been a sapling when Magna Carta was signed. Inevitably he needs to slow down in order to appreciate it fully, to tune in to its slower time frame, to connect with the ecosystem that lives around it, inside it and beneath it. He examines our long-standing dependency on oak trees, and how that has developed and morphed into myth and legend. We no longer build our houses and boats from them or grind their acorns into flour in times of famine; physically we don't need them in the same way now. Or do we? The Oak Papers is a stunning, meditative and healing book about the lessons we can learn from the natural world, if only we slow down enough to listen.. [9781838851507]

Atlantic Hazel: Scotland's Special Woodlands
Atlantic Hazel Action Group 2012 108, col photos, b/w illus, col distribution maps, col tables. A4. PB. NEW. . The Atlantic hazelwoods are one of Scotland's most ancient woodlands. They are older by far than the Atlantic oakwoods of Scotland, and older than some of the Caledonian pinewoods. Together with birch, hazel was one of the earliest woody species to establish along the western edge of Scotland, as far back as 10,000 years Before Present. Pollen evidence points to vast areas of western Scotland being dominated by hazel for hundreds of years. In that time, other plants and animals established amongst the hazel, forming what is today a unique habitat of great antiquity. Hazel can occur as wind-clipped coastal woodland, as small to large stands amongst (or adjacent to) other woodland, or as an 'understorey' with emergent trees such as ash and oak. This book aims to change the way people think about hazel and in particular the hazel woods along the Atlantic seaboard. Until recently, most ecologists perceived hazel as just a coppiced shrub, the commonest component of the underwood in our widespread and enduring coppice-with-standards silvicultural system, and dismissed the hazel-dominated woods of the north and west as scrub - if they recognised them at all. Here, however, we are presented in a lavishly illustrated form with a more discriminating view, which sees the Atlantic hazel woods as a distinctive and highly signi?cant type of woodland, the rain forest - no less - of the British Isles..
