The endpapers are marbled and several pages of ruled paper intended for additional notes are bound in at the front and rear of each volume. The top edges are gilt. The covers are slightly rubbed & scuffed with some light spotting. The hinges of many of the large paper volumes have been reinforced with brown cloth tape. However, the hinges of volume 4, part 2 were not reinforced and the front hinge is cracked with the spine separated from the text block. A substantial set with deckle-edged pages.Very good. Setting out to mark the hundredth anniversary of Scribner's, the publishers concluded that "The story of bookmaking is most accurately recorded in the interchange of letters between author and publisher, and fortunately the letters of this house are practically complete since its earliest days." Roger Burlingame, whose father was the editor of Scribner's Magazine and who had himself served on the company's editorial board, was called upon to sift and interpret this mass of correspondence.
