Pollard, A.W. and G.R. Redgrave; W.A. Jackson and F.S. Ferguson, revised and enlarged by, and then completed by Katharine F. Pantzer
A Short-Title Catalogue of Books Printed in England, Scotland, & Ireland and of English Books Printed Abroad 1475-1640, Second Edition, Complete in Two Volumes
London, Bibliographical Society, . Second Edition. Hardcover. Size: Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. Two massively heavy, oversized volumes, complete, bound in publisher's cloth over boards, being a very dark blue, and with gilt lettering to spines. Bruising to a couple of tips, slight smudging to bottom tips, bowing to front board of Volume I, else clean, tightly bound, unmarked and bright of interiors. Bright and shiny dust jackets, illustrated, little worn, protected by plastic coats. Katherine F. Pantzer finished the revisions and enlargements of W.A. Jackson and F.S. Ferguson in 1946 upon the original edition as compiled by A.W. Pollard and G.R. Redgrave in 1927. There are now roughly 36,000 entries, thus an incomparable reference tool for booksellers, librarians, rare book collectors and archivists. This revised and enlarged edition also corrected earlier mistakes. One then contemporary reviewer remarked that this was "the most meticulous and definitive extended work of bibliography, in any language and on any subject, ever achieved." Volume I comprises entries for A-H and was published in 1986. Volume II covers I-Z and was published in 1976. There was eventually published a third volume devoted to A Printers' & Publishers' Index, Other Indexes & Appendices, Cumulative Addenda & Corrigenda. This S.T.C. is an "imprint catalogue" (five words, max) of every book or broadside printed in England from the beginning of printing in 1476 to 31 December 1640. Covered also are any publications in languages other than British English (e.g., Gaelic, Scottish, etc.). Entries are about, among many other topics, 16th-century bibles and prayerbooks, and then "classic" works by Chapman, Holinshed, Shakespeare, Sidney and Spenser, and then also Greek texts printed at Eton, Italian-language erotica with false imprints produced in London, Irish texts printed in Holland, and so on. Volume I: liii, 620 pp.; Volume II: xi, 494 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . . Very Good/Very Good,
