Darwin, Charles
Journal of Researches Into the Natural History and Geology of the Countries Visited During the Voyage of H.M. S. Beagle Round the World, Under the Command of Capt. Fitz Roy, R. A
New York, D. Appleton and Company, 1891. . Hardcover. Size: 8vo 8" - 9" tall. Sturdy, attractive, tightly bound, internally clean hardcover copy, with unbruised tips, neat and tidy paste-downs; not ex-library, with neither highlighting nor underlining. A stated oeNew Edition,” a probable Third Edition (see below). Probable original publisher’s red cloth binding with gilt lettering on the spine, rubbed but distinct, joints worn a bit, but with lovely black-stamped decorations to front cover. Measures 5 3/4” x 8.” 519 pp. A few black and white illustrations. Six additional pages of advertisements in the back for other books published by D. Appleton and Company. Pages and covers of the book are clean and intact overall. Several signatures have pulled but are still strongly bound. Front cover has slight rubbing, spine is also rubbed and has cracking along the front joint, barely perceptible. Head and tail of the spine are scuffed, paste-downs lightly cracked. A solidly Good copy, now protected by Mylar. Rough-cut page edges all around. Charles Darwin's oeJournal of Researches,” which eventually came to be known as Voyage of the Beagle, became his first published book and bespeaks perhaps the most important period of his life. "On its first appearance in its own right,” he notes in his autobiography, oealso in 1839, it was called Journal of researches into the geology and natural history etc.” The Second Edition, which was first published in 1845, transposes oegeology” and oenatural history” to read Journal of researches into the natural history and geology etc., and the spine title here also reads Naturalist's Voyage. The final definitive text of 1860 has the same wording on the title page, but the spine reads Naturalist's voyage round the world, and the fourteenth thousand of 1879 places A naturalist's voyage on the title page, which is not present here. The oePost-script” here is dated also to 1860.A nice copy of an important book.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. . . . Very Good
