DALY, AUGUSTIN, Woffington: A Tribute to the Actress and the Woman
DALY, AUGUSTIN
Woffington: A Tribute to the Actress and the Woman
Troy, NY: Nims and Knight, 1891. Second Edition. First Printing. Hard Cover. Publisher's full brown cloth, gilt lettering and decoration on spine and cover. Illustrated with 19 tissue-protected photogravure illustrations. Margaret "Peg" Woffington (1720-1760) was a well-known Irish actress in Georgian London. She danced and acted at various Dublin theaters until her success as Sir Harry Wildair in "The Constant Couple" led to her being given her London debut at Covent Garden; she became well known as an actress thereafter. She lived openly with David Garrick, the foremost actor of the day, and her other love affairs (including liaisons with Edward Bligh, 2nd Earl of Darnley and MP Charles Hanbury Williams) were numerous and notorious. John Augustin Daly (1838-1899) was one of the most influential men in American theatre. Drama critic, theatre manager, playwright, and adapter, he became the first recognized stage director in America. He exercised a fierce and tyrannical control over all aspects of his productions. His rules of conduct for actors and actresses imposed heavy fines for late appearances and forgotten lines and earned him the title "the autocrat of the stage." He formed a permanent company in New York and opened Daly's Theatre in New York in 1879 and a second one in London in 1893. Daly was a great book-lover, and his valuable library was dispersed by auction after his death, which occurred in Paris. Besides plays, original and adapted, he wrote "Woffington: a Tribute to the Actress and the Woman" (1888).. Boards almost detached, spine cracked with loss, first signature loose, all text and plates present and clean. READING COPY ONLY. POOR. Photogravures. 4to 11" - 13" tall. 181 pp. Poor with No dust jacket as issued .
