A beautifully produced set, in a binding designed by the prolific book designer. Talwin Morris was influential in Victorian book design with his Art Nouveau approach using line, curve, and decoration to entice the reader. London, J Johnson, 1809. First edition. Cloth. An excellent, wide margined copy of the first edition of this essay collection by Richard Lovell Edgeworth, a pioneer in the education field. Gift inscription from the original binding to the front pastedown, 'A W English Esqu From his Affectionate Brother E W English.' Richard Edgeworth made a lot of effort to developing educational methods. He and his wife kept a register of their own children's progress to use for studies. They were fascinated in the process of education. 'A Rational Primer' was published in 1799. 'Practical Education' which became Edgeworth's best known work was a collaboration with his daughter Maria. This work, 'Professional Education' was published after 'Practical Education&apos. Despite having Richard's name on the title page, this work was mostly written by Maria although she had fears that it may attract criticism if the public knew it was written by a woman. Essays to this work include 'On the Choice of a Profession', 'On The Clerical Profession', 'On the Military and Naval Profession', 'On the Medical Profession', 'On the Education of Country Gentlemen', 'On the Profession of the Law' and 'On the Education of a Prince&apos. In a quarter cloth binding with paper covered boards. Rebound. Externally, very smart. with slight rubbing to the joints and to the extremities. A prior owner's inscription from the original binding to the front pastedown 'A W English Esqu From his Affectionate Brother E W English.' Internally, firmly bound. The notes from the Warden's Account book for the Worshipful Company of Carpenters, a livery company in the City of London, that opened an evening institute in 1886 offering classes in carpentry, joinery, plumbing, geometry, mechanical drawing and cookery. This work contains notes from 1546 to 1571 with specific reference to payments and accounts. Transcribed and edited by Bower Marsh. In the original quarter vellum binding with blue cloth boards. Externally, sound with light rubbing and bumping to the extremities. Marks to the boards and spine. Light discolouration to the vellum as is typical with ageing. Internally, firmly bound.
