Hedges was a key figure in promoting electrical lighting at the end of the 19th century. The provenance of this book, with his own dedication on it, is interesting - marred somewhat by the unnecessary pencil marks by the ICE librarian.

Spine extremities slightly pulled, ffep and cover of first publication detached, otherwise very good. Hedges was a key figure in promoting electrical lighting at the end of the 19th century. As well as the second edition of his book with Spon, this binding includes two important articles: one an extract from the proceedings of the Institute of Civil Engineers, the other a paper read at the annual meeting of the Association of Municipal Engineers and Surveyors in Oxford in 1883.

Hoppus's Practical Measurer; or, Measuring Made Easy to the Meanest Capacity, By a New Set of Tables...

London, John Smith (1737) 1848? xl, 205pp, many tables on tabbed pages, fold-out plate at front. 18x8, decorative green calf binding, Edges worn and rubbed, some surface loss on spine, binding cracking and some ancient tape repairs to the tabs, owner's name in ink on ffep. Hoppus was an early English surveyor who developed many techniques and skills for more accurate estimating of quantities required. His proposed unit "the Hoppus Cubic Foot" for estimating how much raw timber would be required for a specific volume of finished timber after processing and wastage, and was used in forestry until metrication (it was roughly 21% larger than a 'normal' cubic foot.There appear to be two John Smith versions, one from 1848 and one from 1861, each with identical pagination(WorldCat). There is no indication that this is a second impression or edition, so it assumed that it is the earlier version.
