FAIRBAIRN William
An Account of the Construction of the Britannia and Conway Tubular Bridges with A Complete History of their Progress, from the conception of the original idea, to the conclusion of the elaborate experiments which determined the exact form and mode of construction ultimately adopted.
London, John Weale and Longman, Brown, Green and Longmans, 1849. Fold-out frontis transverse section of Conway Bridge, xii, 291pp inc figs plus 19 fold-out plates. Plate number 9 is not present (as published) and not called for in text. 24x17, cloth, quarter bound in leather, glt lettering on spine. Front board previously loose now reattached with tape internally and externally, corners bumped, rubbing to edges and spine, some pages heavily foxed, all folding plans present and complete but with a number of creases and closed tears, well-used fair to good copy thus. Fairbairn was an important civil engineer who worked extensively with wrought iron. He also worked with Stephenson on the design of the Britannia Bridge over the Menai Strait, opened 1848. There was some controversy over Fairbairn's contribution to the bridge and he wrote this book to give his version of events. An important work in the history of civil engineering. Uncommon.
