Edges heavily rubbed with some loss of surface, front and bottom edges untrimmed, book plate (Sir Alfred James Newton) on ffep, binding cracked in a couple of places, fair to good copy thus. Gives a history of bridges in this area of London, followed by a detailed account of the new bridge and its background.Sir Alfred Newton had a distinguished career as a businessman, during which he was involved with the stock market flotation of Harrods, where he served as Chairman for many years. He became Lord Mayor of London in 1899, and was made a Lord the following year. He died in bizarre circumstances in 1921 when he was apparently accidentally poisoned by strychnine in a medicine made up at the pharmacy in Harrods.
