RIDDELL Robert
The Carpenter and Joiner, Stair Builder and Hand-Railer. With thirty-three plates.
London, Thomas C. Jack, c1870, 2nd ed revised. Single sided frontis and single sided plates with nine illustrations of 'Dignity in Mechanic Art', 82pp, 33 single-sided plates, including one fold-out. 34x28, half bound in black with black patterned cloth, glt lettering, all edges glt. Contemporary owner's name in ink on ffep, dated 1871, rubbing and shelfwear to calf and cloth, one corner bumped not affecting pages, internal hinges repaired; overall a very nice edition. Riddell's first edition had sold out in just 90 days, so this new edition gave him the chance to add the 'Dignity of Mechanical Art' plate at the beginning, as well as changes to plates 9 and 10 as "a very important and decided improvement for the construction of the French or Mansard roof", alongside corrections to the text. However the major change is that the original edition had 59 plates, with templates to cut out to make cardboard models. While the models make finding a first edition intact difficult, this revised edition seems to be considerably scarcer.

RIDDELL Robert
The Carpenter and Joiner, Stair Builder and Hand-Railer. With fifty-eight plates, and a series of cardboard models.
London, William McKenzie c1875, 2nd ed revised. 124pp, 58 plates, of which four are duplicated as cardboard cut out models, one foldout. 35x27, half bound in red calf, glt decoration and lettering, five raised bands on spine, marbled eps and edges. Presentation dedication on fly-leaf, light edgewear, some discoloured spots on rear board, good thus. Cardboard models entirely intact. Riddell's first edition had sold out in just 90 days, so this new edition gave him the chance to make changes to plates 9 and 10 as "a very important and decided improvement for the construction of the French or Mansard roof", alongside corrections to the text. This was one of the few American books republished in the UK during the 19th century, and was very popular. But copies with models intact - indicating that the buyer hadn't used the book as intended! - are unusual. [heavy item, may require additional postage].
