NATIONAL BUILDING AGENCY
The First Ten Years...NBA '64 - '74
London, NBA 1974 12pp, many bw photographs. 30x21, illustrated wraps. Very good. Promotional piece marking the anniversary of the agency's creation. Several projects illustrated, some (very dull) pictures of the board of directors; the highlight is the strikingly good design of the piece itself, including the NBA logo in three colours - good enough for the rather more famous organisation of the same name, perhaps!

NICHOLSON Peter
Nicholson's New Carpenter's Guide: being a complete book of lines, for carpenters, joiners, and workmen in general, on methods entirely new, founded on geometrical principles.
London, Jones (1792) 1825. (improved and enlarged ed) Fp portrait, xii (mostly 'memoir of Peter Nicholson'), 121pp, c. 121 plates, title page and first two pages of "A Practical Treatise on Mensuration" bound in at the end. 28x22, marbled boards, vellum spine, title on label with glt text. Boards a bit worn, especially on edges, significant water mark on a number of the plates (as these are bound in opposite the relevant text description pages, which are not affected, it is clear that the work has rebound at some point). Enlarged version of this notable work. Nicholson's brilliance as both a carpenter and practical mathematician helped to make his Guide one of the most importance guide books for the 18th and 19th century craftsman.

NICHOLSON Peter, revised by Thomas TREDGOLD
Practical Carpentry, Joinery, and Cabinet-Making; being a new and complete system of lines for the use of workmen.
London, Thos. Kelly, 1847. iv, 140pp, 36pp, lxxxiv plates, vi further plates. 28x22, marbled boards, gilt lettered leather spine. Rubbed and marked, front board detached, substantial piece of the spine missing, rear hinge cracked, contents intact and tight, some foxing, bottom edges damp marked. Like previous Kelly editions, this took the original two volumes and printed them together (it is difficult to perceive what Tredgold's revisions might amount to), with seperate paginations. Would make a nice restoration project.

NICHOLSON Peter, revised by Thomas TREDGOLD
Practical Carpentry, Joinery, and Cabinet-Making; being a new and complete system of lines for the use of workmen.
London, Thos. Kelly, 1847. viii, 140pp, 36pp (vol I) lxxxiv plates, vi further plates (Vol II) 28x22, marbled boards, half bound in leather, glt lettering. Small piece of spine missing on vol I, small label on front of each volume, owner's hand-written label (DS Morrison of Scarfskerry), some pages creased, generally good copy of a working book. This version of Nicholson's classic work included options for binding the plates either at the end or separately, or after specific pages of text - in this case the former approach has been taken. The three books of Nicholson's original are all included in the first volume, with books I and II paginated consecutively and book III separately.

NICHOLSON Peter, revised by Thomas TREDGOLD
Practical Carpentry, Joinery, and Cabinet-Making; being a new and complete system of lines for the use of workmen.
London, Thos. Kelly, 1865 xxxvi, 140pp, 36pp, 32pp (The Practical Builders Price Book), 107 plates (109 called for) 29x23, marbled boards, half bound in leather. Boards and spine worn and rubbed, remains of tape repairs on front board and title page, re-bound, browning to most plates; 109 plates called for, 107 present. A later Kelly edition of Nicholson's classic work, with additional plates added (the comparison in quality with Nicholson's originals is striking), and a copy of The Practical Builder's Price Book bound in. The binding instructions list 109 plates, but only 107 are present - whether this is because they are missing or because the instructions were wrong isn't clear.
