Krahl, Regina:
China Without Dragons. Rare Pieces from Oriental Ceramic Society.
07 2020, (22,9 x 30,5 cm), 360 pp. English & Chinese text, 351 colour ills., hardcover.
¶ This fully illustrated and researched catalogue commemorates an exhibition of over 200 pieces of Chinese and related ceramics collected within the members of the Oriental Ceramic Society of London. The selection spans the complete range from Neolithic to contemporary ceramics, from minor kilns in many different regions to the major kilns working for the court, and from pieces of academic interest to world-famous masterpieces. It privileges unusual and rarely seen artifacts and avoids well known, repetitive designs such as that of the dragon, which is so firmly identified with China that it has become a cliche of Chinese art. It also aims to demonstrate the vast variety of wares and the inventiveness of Asian potters well beyond the classic confines. Text in English and Chinese/

Löfgren, Christer:
Understanding Chinese Reign Marks
06 2021, (19,5 x 25,5 cm), 288 pp English, 199 colour ills., hatdcover.
¶ In his third book, Christer Löfgren expands the scholarship on imperial Chinese porcelain with a radical, new interpretation of the term 'Mark and Period'. From identifying only marks on imperial porcelain, to looking at objects associated with those marks, his analysis will change imperial porcelain's image and significantly contribute to the knowledge base of Chinese porcelain experts and collectors. For the first time, it is now possible to group all imperial items in all these periods, from Ming to the end of the Qing period. Based on a database of over 5000 items and marks, this survey provides statistics which make it possible to go deeper into identifying which items and marks are 'Mark and Period', copies, or counterfeits.

Lam, Peter Y.K. & Monique Crick & Laure Schwartz-Arenales:
A Millennium of Monochromes. From the Great Tang to the High Qing. The Baur and the Zhuyuetang Collections.
2-2018, (21,7 x 27,5 cm), 392 pp. English/ French text and Chinese summeries, 240 colour ills., hardcover.
¶ More than any other civilisation, China is renowned for its long tradition of ceramic production, from its terracotta and stoneware works in ancient times to the imperial porcelain manufactured at Jingdezhen from the end of the fourteenth century. These works have been admired and collected over centuries for their outstanding quality and refinement. Now two hundred masterpieces from prominent private collections around the world have been brought together for the first time in a new book. The Baur Collections in Geneva, formed between 1928 and 1951, and the Zhuyuetang Collection (the Bamboo and Moon Pavilion in Hong Kong), which has been building since the late 1980s, reveal the elegance and variety of imperial monochrome porcelain wares produced during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644-1911) dynasties, which followed on from the Tang (618-907) and Song (960-1279) periods. These restrained pieces - both profane and sacred - exemplify the values of simplicity and modesty espoused by classical Chinese texts. With chapters devoted to the historical, cultural and technical contexts in which these pieces were made, this book will be a key reference on Chinese monochrome ceramics for all lovers of the subject, as well as students, researchers and connoisseurs.

Netsuke in comparison. Motifs and Their Variations.
01 2019, (23 x 29 cm), 240 pp English/ german text, 800 ills. in colour and b/w, hardcover.
¶ Netsuke - classic belt decorations for men - are rooted in a historical, mythological and artistic tradition in Japanese culture. Woodcarvers and their pupils, even counterfeiters, continued the work of their role models, in copies or variants of what came before them, and even created major works of art with the smallest of dimensions. Since the opening up of Japan in 1853, the miniature works have gained appreciation, and enthusiasts of them are found all over the world. Today netsuke are still being created in a great variety of motifs. The current publication presents one hundred netsuke from a private collection. For the very first time, it endeavours to juxtapose them with comparative images from collections and literature in order to locate them within this genre and to convey something of their diversity and expressiveness.

The Search for Immortality. Tomb treasures of Han China.
2012, 924,5 x 28,5 cm), 384 pp. English text, 350 colour ills + 120 b/w/ ills., harcover
¶ During the last two centuries BC, the Western Han dynasty of China forged the first stable empire covering all of China and presided over a golden age that shaped much of subsequent Chinese art and culture. From family values to the structure of the civil service, Han thinking and philosophy continue to pervade Chinese society up to the present day - indeed, the majority of Chinese people consider themselves 'Han Chinese'. In their search for immortality, the Han imperial family left an artistic legacy of spectacular beauty and power. The finest of these treasures to have survived - including exquisite jades, silver and goldwork, bronzes and ceramics - have been found in the tombs of the Han imperial family and of a rival 'emperor' of Nanyue and are brought together for the first time in a landmark exhibition at The Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge. The accompanying catalogue, written by an international team of leading scholars in the field, presents a ground-breaking account and is sumptuously illustrated by nearly 500 striking photographs, many of them specially commissioned.

The Baur Collection, Japanese Buddhist Textiles inn teh Baur Collection.
2015, (23,1 x 29,3 cm), 336 pp., English / French parallel textm 410 colour ills., hardcover wist justjacket.
¶ The Asian art collections at the Baur Foundation, Museum of Far Eastern Art, Geneva, are world-renowned. This new volume gathers together for the first time a group of 121 Japanese Buddhist textiles dating from the 18th and 19th centuries purchased by Alfred Baur in 1927. Concentrating not on kimonos or monks' kesa robes, this collection is made up of uchishiki, a type of textile not very well known outside Japan, used to cover temple altars. While small, these cloths provide an important insight into the religious practices of the period as well as being testaments to the extraordinary skill of Kyoto weavers. Like the kesa, they were made from lengths of sumptuous silk donated to a temple by the faithful. With elaborate polychrome decoration, highlighted by gold or silver thread, they stand out as examples of the most intricate and luxurious weaving and give tangible expression to the extent of the donor's faith. Superb photographs are accompanied by a discussion of the history of silk weaving in Japan and the techniques and decorative motifs used, as well as full scholarly notes. This is the twelfth in a series of volumes documenting the Asian art collections of Alfred Baur (1865-1951).

MacGuire, Becky:, Four Centuries of Blue and White. The Frelinghuysen Collection of Chinese & Japanese Export Porcelain.
MacGuire, Becky:
Four Centuries of Blue and White. The Frelinghuysen Collection of Chinese & Japanese Export Porcelain.
11 2023, (24,5 x 28 cm), 432 pp. English, ca. 500 colour ills., hardcover.
¶ This beautifully illustrated and scholarly book presents the Frelinghuysen collection of Chinese and Japanese export porcelain. It is the first major publication to consider Chinese and Japanese blue and white together. This extraordinary collection, assembled carefully over fifty years, features an exceptionally wide array of Asian blue and white porcelain - that most ubiquitous and influential of all ceramics. Ranging from Chinese pieces specially made for Portuguese traders in the 16th century to late 19th century commissions for the Thai royal court, the collection also includes numerous Chinese classics from the era of the European trading companies and a notable selection of Japanese export porcelain. In its vast scope it speaks of the diverse impulses and historical forces that propelled the trade in Asian porcelain and provides a lens through which to view the interaction of East and West from the early modern age to the dawn of the 20th century. More than 300 pieces from the collection are illustrated and discussed in full and another 250 are illustrated in a compendium, all divided into thematic chapters that reflect the many ways Chinese and Japanese porcelain has been traded, collected and lived with around the world. Essays by William R. Sargent, former Curator of Asian Export Art at the Peabody Essex Museum, and noted armorial porcelain authority Angela Howard, precede the thirteen chapters, which include Faith, Identity, For the Table, To European Design and Made in Japan. Great rarities are featured alongside small, amusing pieces and the many export porcelains made to elevate the practices of daily life. With its strict adherence to blue and white porcelain, the collection intensifies our focus on forms, patterns and designs, gathering together wares that are often considered only separately for study while also covering areas of little recent scholarship, such as the Thai market material. The specialized reader will find references to the latest research while the more general reader will appreciate a comprehensive overview of Asian export porcelain. There has not been a significant survey of either Chinese or Japanese blue and white since the 1990s, and they have never been considered together in a major publication.

Seladon in Augenmerk. Jadegleiche Porzellande und Inhre Meister in Longquan, VR China.
11 2019, (22 x 28 cm), 240 pp., German text, 381 ills., hardcover.
¶ This German language book accompanies the exhibition in the Ethnographic Museum at the University of Zurich (CH), 24.11.2019 - 22.11.2020. Since the ninth century, the province of Zhejiang, China, has been known for its fine celadon porcelain with its wonderful shimmering surfaces in magnificent shades of blue and green. The golden age of Chinese celadon lasted from the eleventh to the fourteenth centuries, when it found its way into the imperial collections and was exported worldwide. This craftsmanship then declined, almost completely died out by the end of the nineteenth century, and was not successfully revived until the 1950s in state-owned factories. A first young generation of ceramists, including some females, have now come of age. Some of these ceramists have successfully aligned themselves, under the seal of UNESCO World Cultural Heritage and within the Chinese cultural heritage system, as nationally acknowledged masters due to their unparalleled celadon glazes. They are all glaze enthusiasts, always in search of the perfect celadon. The exhibition of the Ethnographic Museum at the University of Zurich presents the contours of a frame of reference within which this community of ceramists negotiates the valuation of their celadons today.

Miksic, John:
Old Javanese Gold. The Hunter Thompson Collection at the Yale University Art Gallery.
2011. (21,6 x 25 cm), 224 pp. English text, 145 colour ills., hardcover
¶ While ancient Javanese bronze and ironwork have long elicited interest, there is a lesser-known yet equally fascinating aspect of the Indonesian island's history: gold artifacts, including jewelry, clothing accessories, statues, coins, and containers. Not only do these objects display exceptional craftsmanship, they also provide a significant source of information on Javanese society, culture, religion, economy, technology, and art from the 1st century BCE to 1500. This revised and expanded edition of the 1990 publication Old Javanese Gold celebrates Valerie and Hunter Thompson's 2007 gift of Javanese gold objects to the Yale University Art Gallery and the subsequent founding of the Department of Indo-Pacific Art. Along with entirely new photography and a fresh design, the book's essays have been updated to incorporate recent discoveries - including the Wonoboyo hoard, one of the most important gold hoards ever excavated in Southeast Asia. Peranakan Chinese Porcelain is richly illustrated and includes key information on reign marks and factory marks. In-depth discussion of the motifs, colors, forms and functions of Peranakan Chinese ceramics makes this an invaluable reference. Supporting photographs and text introduce related aspects of Peranakan culture including architecture, dress, cuisine and customs, making Peranakan Chinese Porcelain a wonderful contribution to the history of the Straits Chinese.
