Jörg, Christiaan J.A.:
Chinese and Japanese Porcelains in the Frits Lugt Collection.
11 2023, (25 x 28 cm), 272 pp. English, ca. 430 colour ills., hardcover.
¶ When the famous Dutch art historian and connoisseur Frits Lugt (1884-1970) and his wife Jacoba Klever (1888-1969) decided to present their collections in the Hôtel Turgot in Paris, Chinese porcelain ranked among their priorities. They intended to give the French public an impression of Dutch Golden Age interiors and a porcelain cabinet had traditionally been part of Dutch material culture. Lugt started assembling his Chinese porcelain collection when he lived in the Netherlands. After the Second World War, the couple settled in Paris, and Lugt continued to buy from dealers and at auctions in France and England. He acquired a variety of pieces, either made for export or for domestic Chinese use. The result, now permanently exhibited in the Fondation Custodia, is a small but exquisite collection of high-quality Chinese porcelain, ranging mainly from the 16th to the late 18th centuries. It reflects the Dutch preference for Kraak, Transitional and Kangxi porcelain, but a number of unusual or even unique non-export porcelains are also on display. Almost all of these pieces are decorated in underglaze cobalt-blue. In this catalogue, written by Dr. Christiaan J.A. Jörg, Dutch specialist on Chinese and Japanese porcelain, each of the 125 pieces is described in detail and placed in a scholarly context. Special attention is paid to iconography, inscriptions and marks. A longer, informative essay elaborates on the history of the collection and shorter essays introduce each of the six sections into which the catalogue is chronologically divided. Every object has been photographed and reproduced from multiple angles, including the base.

Japan Modern. Japanese Prints from the Elise Wessels Collection.
January 2017, ( x cm), 264 pp. English text, illsutarted in colour, hardcover with dustwrappers,

¶ The Japanese belt accessories for men known as netsuke aroused great interest in Europe already at the end of the 19th century. Today they have become special, highly-prized collector's items all over the world. The main subjects are mythical creatures, gods of popular religion, and exotic animals and also depictions of Europeans, particularly Dutchmen, who fascinated the Japanese in the 18th and 19th century. The craftsmanship is of incomparable perfection, and the materials include boxwood, ivory, horn, coral, tortoise-shell and much else. Famous artists like Yoshimura Shûzan (1700-1773) and Ohara Mitsuhiro (1810-1878) created masterpieces which strongly influenced this art form. The two volumes present more than 850 objects from the collection of Anne and Christian Trumpf, one of the most important netsuke collections worldwide, with in-depth commentary and lavish illustrations. The author, Dr. Patrizia Jirka-Schmitz, is a well-known scholar in this field. A new standard work on netsuke - an area of collecting that over the last few years has grown immensely on an international scale.

¶ BOOKSALE Û 142,00 LAST COPIES NOW Û 69,95 An enduring witness to Dutch-Japanese relations is Arita export porcelain made for the Dutch market in the 17th and 18th centuries. The Dutch East India Company (VOC) was instrumental in ordering and distributing a variety of export wares. Private trade also played an important role. This resulted in the importation of large amounts of Japanese porcelain into The Netherlands, particularly during a period when Chinese porcelain was not available. These objects were assimilated into Dutch life and they stimulated the interest in exotica from the Orient. While many of these exquisite pieces have been lost over time, numerous examples are still preserved in public and private collections in The Netherlands. Professor Dr Jörg discusses the variety of export ware and the extraordinary pieces in those collections, many of which are published here for the first time. This survey offers a fascinating insight into a relatively unknown aspect of Dutch-Japanese interaction and is the first book of its kind devoted to this subject in English. Ramsj

2016, (24 x 30,4 cm), 336 pp. English text, 500 colour ills., hardcover with dustjacket.
¶ Features over 350 exquisite ivories, the most notable artefacts in Sassoon's important collection Essays written by experts in their fields place the objects in their historical context, making this a book that is both accessible and enlightening. Perfect for anyone interested in Asian art, the history of collecting, or the rich and varied relationship between East and West in the twentieth century. Sir Victor Sassoon (1881-1961) lived an extraordinary and colourful life and left a remarkable legacy. He created a trust to preserve his collection of ivories for the benefit of UK citizens. Since its foundation and under the guardianship of the dedicated trustees, the collection has grown by the addition of significant specimens that originally went unrepresented. Chinese Ivory Carvings presents 350 of its most significant artefacts, each illustrated and discussed. Four introductory essays explore the acquisition of the pieces, placing the ivories in their historical and cultural context. In this scholarly celebration of Sassoon's bequest, one can appreciate some of the many facets of Chinese culture both religious and secular. Including minutely carved 'devil's work' spheres, massive figures and exuberantly carved vases, the book is also testament to the technical skills of the craftsmen who produced these wonderful objects. Rose Kerr is former Keeper of the Far Eastern Department at the V&A. Phillip Allen is Secretary of the Sir Victor Sassoon Chinese Ivories Trust. Shi Ching-fei is Associate Professor at National Taiwan University and former curator, National Palace Museum.

Dazzling Official Jun Wares from Museums and Collections Around the World.
08 2021, (26,7 X 31,7 cm), 288 pp. English Chinese text, 425 colour ills., hardcover.
¶ Jun wares were made in north China over a period of 400 years, from the 11th to the 15th centuries. These ceramics are unique both for their artistry and the complex techniques required to produce them. Jun wares are subtle yet dramatic - red and purple bursts of colour splash across thick, cloudy blue glazes, containing bubbles and many gradations of tone. To achieve these effects, the production of Jun ware was complex and ingenious, relying on novel techniques. This book gathers illustrations and descriptions of some of the finest Jun wares in private and public collections around the world. The account starts with ceramics dating to the Song, Jin and Yuan dynasties and proceeds to the stunning 'Official' Jun wares made in the early Ming dynasty. Copious illustrations are augmented with a scholarly essay. Highlighting over 191 pieces of Jun ware with 425 illustrations from 17 major museums, Dazzling Official Jun Wares will inspire collectors, students and anyone with a love for Chinese ceramics.

¶ This marvelous book discusses Song Dynasty Yaozhou and Qingbai ceramics. Ilustrated from one of the finest private collections in the world, it is authored by the world-renowned authority on Chinese ceramics Rose Kerr. It looks at two very distinct ceramic types, that were greatly admired in China at the time of their manufacture. It acts as an introduction to two important Chinese kilns and their products, but goes on to place the ceramics in their historical, geographical, economic and social contexts, using the latest research from both China and the West. How were ceramics used, where were they employed and who owned them? How were they made, and where were they sold ? Why are Yaozhou and Qingbai ceramics treasured by connoisseurs? All these questions and more are addressed in the text. Abundantly illustrated with pictures, details and marks of pieces in the collection, the text is amplified with pictures from historical sources, and by beautiful new photographs of contemporary China. The ceramics shown in this publication form a private collection of the highest quality, that includes many exceptional items. Over the last 20 years the collector has sought objects of refinement and rarity across the world. The books' innovative design and abundant use of colour marks a new departure for books on Chinese ceramics. Designed by Irma Boom, an Amsterdam-based graphic designer and specialist in hand-made books. 04 2022, (26,6 x 32,7 cm), 288 pp. English/ Chinese text, 711 colour & 3 b/w. ills., hardcover.
¶ Yaozhou ware is one of the finest Chinese celadons, made in north China over a period of 700 years, from the 7th to the 14th centuries. Their style developed and changed over time. In the Tang dynasty (618-906) black, brown, lead glazed and black-on-white painted ceramics were made. During the Five Dynasties period (907-960) a technical peak was achieved, and white-bodied wares with beautiful blue-green glazes appeared. During the Northern Song and Jin dynasties (906-1279) more olive-toned celadon glazes became the norm, their intricate decoration and lustrous surfaces supplying a unique aesthetic. At the end of the Jin dynasty the kilns declined and started to manufacture folk ware. 'Yaozhou Wares from Museums and Art Institutes Around the World' gathers illustrations and descriptions of some of the finest Yaozhou wares in private and public collections around the globe. The account considers ceramics in sections, according to their form and decoration, and includes the finest-quality 'official wares' requisitioned for imperial use. Copious illustrations are augmented by a scholarly essay. Highlighting over 400 pieces of Yaozhou ware, the book contains 711 colour and 3 black-and-white illustrations from 56 major museums and art institutes, and will inspire collectors, students and anyone with a love for Chinese ceramics.

Knol, Meta & Remco Raben & Kitty Zijlmans.
Beyond the Dutch. Indonesië, Nederland en de beeldende kunsten van 1900 tot nu.
2009, (23 x 27,5 cm), 200 pp. Dutch, numerous ills., hardcover.

Krahe, Cinta:, Chinese porcelain in Habsburg Spain.
Krahe, Cinta:
Chinese porcelain in Habsburg Spain.
March 2016, 17,5 x 28 cm), 586 pp. English text, 345 colour ills., hardcover.
¶ Although Spain was one of the main commercial and colonial powers of the Modern Age, its role in the circulation of Chinese export porcelain was far from being very clear. The present work, which examines the reception of pieces of this kind during the reign of the Habsburgs, is therefore intended to fill an important gap. Together with lacquered objects and exotica, porcelain circulated throughout the Spanish Empire, passing through the Americas, but until now there had been no record of the pieces that reached the Spanish market. However, Krahe reconstructs the journey of this porcelain ware from southern China, analysing what it was like, how it was displayed and stored, to what uses it was put and how it was valued in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Spain. Based on thorough archival research, a systematic survey of archaeological discoveries, a rich documentary corpus and a great deal of illustrations, the author provides an insight into a hitherto unknown aspect, opening up new perspectives for historians, art historians, and historians of material culture and taste.
