Shunga. Sex and pleasure in Japanse art
October 2013, 24,5 x 28,9 cm), 560 pp. English text, 420 colour ills., hardcover
¶ In early modern Japan thousands of sexually explicit paintings, prints, and illustrated books with texts were produced, euphemistically called spring pictures ( shunga ) . Frequent ly tender, funny and beautiful, shunga were mostly done within the popular school known as pictures of the floating world ( ukiyo - e ), by celebrated artists such as Utamaro and Hokusai. Shunga is in some ways a unique phenomenon in pre - modern world cultu re, in terms of the quantity, the quality and the nature of the art that was produced. This catalogue of a major international exhibition aims to answer some key questions about what is shunga and why it was produced. In particular the social and cultura l contexts for sex art in Japan are explored . Erotic Japanese art was heavily suppressed in Japan from the 1870s onwards as part of a process of cultural modernisation that imported many contemporary western moral values. Only in the last twenty years or so has it been possible to publish unexpurgated examples in Japan and this landmark book places e rotic Japanese art in its historical and cultural context for the first time. Drawing on the latest scholarship and featuring over 400 images of works from major public and private collections, this important book looks at painted and printed erotic images produced in Japan during the Edo period (1600 1868) and early Meiji era (1868 1912). These are related to the wider contexts of literature, the atre, the culture of the pleasure quarters, and urban consumerism

Clunas, Craig & Jessica Harrison-Hall:
Ming. 50 years that changed China.
September 2014, (24,4 x 28 cm), 304 pp. English text, 250 colour ills., hardcover.
¶ This publication accomapnies a major exhibition at the British Museum (sept. 2014). A ground-breaking, beautifully illustrated book exploring the early Ming period, a time when China was the largest state in the world, ruled by a single family. Ask anyone what single object they associate with China and the most common answer will be a Ming vase. Probably without even knowing the dates of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), people are aware of the fragility of its porcelain, its rarity and value. But porcelain is just one part of the story of one of the most glorious époques of Chinas past. By focusing on the significant years of the early Ming dynasty and through the themes of court people and their lives, extraordinary developments in culture, the military, religion, diplomacy and trade, this magnificent book brings the wider history of this fascinating period to colourful life. This was an age of great voyages of exploration, undertaken for many reasons including trade and diplomacy. Long before the regular arrivals of Europeans in China, court-sponsored expeditions were sent to Asia, the Middle East and the African coast, bringing back knowledge of and objects from lands thousands of miles away gold, gems and foreign fashions. This period also saw the compilation of the worlds first comprehensive encyclopaedia (worked on by over 2000 scholars); the undertaking of major building projects such as the Forbidden City and Ming tombs; the creation of beautiful textiles, paintings, ceramics, gold, jewellery, furniture, jade and lacquer. The engaging narrative is richly illustrated with over 250 images, drawing on the objects specially selected for the British Museums major exhibition. Some of these are the finest pieces ever made in China.

Cohen, Michael & William Motley:
Mandarin and Menagerie. Chinese and Japanese Export Ceramic Figures. Volume I: The James E. Sowell Collection.
2008, (25,4 x 31,5 cm), 304 pp. English text, numerous colour ills., hardcover and dustjacket. Condition Very good.
¶ This book covers the largest and most important collection of Chinese and Japanese export figures currently exisiting in the world. Collected by James E. Sowell of Dallas, Texas, there are over 170 items including over 50 bird figures, a dozen dogs, and a unique pair of leopards possibly made for the Imperial Summer Palace. It includes a history of the european trade with Canton and contains an informative guide to the dating of many of these pieces, with many pictures of the bases of the figures. The book catalogues the James E. Sowell collection in detail, arranging the animals according to approximate zoological taxonomie groups and commenting on some of the scientific knowledge available at the time. Traditional theory says that the Chinese potters were simply copying European species and models but the book proposes that, with a few significant exceptions, the resulting porcelain models are inspired by Chinese fauna. Mainly consisting of Chinese export figures of the 17th, 18th and early 19th century, there are also a few related figures from Japan.

March 2015 (24 x 28,5 cm), 456 pp. English text, 360 ills., (incl. some foldouts) hardcover with dustjacket.
¶ The Baur Foundation, Museum of Far Eastern Art in Geneva, Switzerland, houses one of the most important collections of Asian art in the world: some 9,000 works from China and Japan. This new book celebrates the 50th anniversary of the museum and the 150th birthday of Alfred Baur (1865-1951). Lavishly illustrated with stunning new photographs, the book showcases the diversity and quality of Baur's collections, which span netsuke, lacquerware, saber fittings, prints, jades, imperial ceramics, textiles, and much more. The Baur Foundation, Museum of Far Eastern Art, this book presents one of the major collections of Asian art through an opulent selection from the 9000 objects of the arts of China and Japan, today housed in an elegant private mansion constructed in Geneva during the late nineteenth century. 'Alfred Baur, Pioneer and collector' combines the history of the Far East with that of the man who founded the company A. Baur & Co. Ltd. in Colombo (Ceylon) in 1897. Guided by the stunning photographs of Hughes Dubois, readers are led into the museum to discover both the essence of the collection and the life of a man fascinated by the arts of the Far East. Sabre fittings, netsuke, lacquer ware, prints, jades and imperial ceramics: the illustrations show the diversity of the works and the quality of the collection as a whole. The precious Japanese objects, so meticulously worked and of technical perfection, reveal the outstanding skills of Japanese craftsmen, while the simplicity of the forms of the Chinese monochrome ceramics display the contemporaneity of the visionary master ceramists of the Song dynasty.

Splendid Impressions/ Japanese Secular Paintings 1400-1900 in the Museum of East Asian Art, Cologne.
November 2011, (25 x 30,3 cm), 360 pp. English text, numerous colour ills,, hardcover.
¶ This publication focuses on the collection of Japanese secular painting in the Museum of East Asian Art in Cologne, a large part of which was acquired by the museum's founders Adolf and Frieda Fischer before 1913. Six internationally renowned specialists of Japanese art present new insights and approaches to pre-modern Japanese visual culture in this exquisitely illustrated catalogue. The publication is divided into two parts: the first section discusses the reception of Japanese art and the dawn of East Asian art history in Germany, as well as shedding new light on the role of the monk painter as mediator between Chinese and Japanese concepts of secular art. The main body of the publication is the catalogue section. Here, 94 works (divided into seven subject categories) are presented: hand scrolls, fans, hanging scrolls and folding screens. All works are reproduced in full colour, many scrolls being shown in their entirety. Each chapter is preceded by an introduction, elucidating the historiographical, aesthetic and methodological questions that are central to current research in the visual culture of pre-modern Japan. The illuminating entries are followed by a comprehensive appendices section, including photographs of the paintings' signatures, seals and transcriptions of the inscriptions in the paintings. Splendid Impressions will serve as a reference source not only for curators, scholars and students of Japanese art and culture, but also for anyone who has a personal interest in Japanese painting

The Secret of Colours. Ceramics in China and Europe from the 18th Century to the Present. / Le Secret des Couleurs É
12 2022, (21,5 x 26,3 cm), 180 pp. French English text, numerous ills., softcover.
¶ This book, which accompanies an exhibition at the Fondation Baur, explores the intriguing story of porcelain glaze at the end of the 18th century in China, in the 19th century in France, and in the work of two 20th century ceramic artists. Part one investigates the development of opaque glazes for use on porcelain and copper during the 18th century in work from three collections: Alfred Baur's vast collection of imperial ceramics; the Canton glazes of the Zubov Foundation; and export porcelain from the Ariana Museum in Geneva. The second part begins in France, in the 19th century, at the Sèvres factory, tracing the various journeys to China to bring back samples of colour, analyse them chemically, and tirelessly attempt to reproduce them. The catalogue ends in the present, with the experiments conducted by the American-born artist Fance Franck (1927-2008) on 'sacrificial red' and the work on color carried out by the Austrian ceramist Thomas Bohle.

Davison, Gerald:, The Handbook of Marks on Chinese Ceramics. (New and revised edition)
Davison, Gerald:
The Handbook of Marks on Chinese Ceramics. (New and revised edition)
revised edition 2021, (16 x 24 cm), 400 pp. English text., over 4.200 marks., hardbound.
¶ Almost 10 years in the making it is the only reference work in any language to deal so exhaustively with the entire range of these very diverse marks. This time, the almost 3,400 individual marks are beautifully reproduced in colour and compiled in sections and groupings to make recognition of such unfamiliar shapes as easy as possible. All of the marks are translated into English together with the pinyin Romanisation. The range of marks includes not only those in the regular kaishu script but also some 500 marks redrawn in the classical zhuanshu seal script form together with a range of pictorial symbols. Finally the very detailed 70 page directory section then provides a wide range of historical, dating, geographical and mythological information, where available, for each mark. Building on the gradual success of first the unique small format 'Guide' (250 marks) published in 1987 which was reprinted twice, and then the much acclaimed and more comprehensive 'Handbook' (1800 marks) published in 1994, this NEW and EXPANDED publication now contains 4.200 marks spread over 320 pages.

Delery, Claire & Huei-Chung Tsao & Monique Crick, et al:, Chinese Porcelains of the Santos Palace.
Delery, Claire & Huei-Chung Tsao & Monique Crick, et al:
Chinese Porcelains of the Santos Palace.
2022, (24,5 x 28 cm), 480 pp. English text, 610 ills., hardcover.
¶ The Palace of Santos in Lisbon, today the seat of the French Embassy in Portugal, conceals a treasure: a small square lounge, topped with a pyramidal roof in gilded wood, on which are hung nearly three hundred dishes and plates Chinese porcelain with predominantly white and blue decor. Unique in the world, this collection of Chinese porcelain, constituting the incomparable and sumptuous decor of the '_Porcelain Room_' of the Palace of Santos, illustrates the history of ceramic production in China, between the beginnings of the 16th century and the end of of the 18th century, and its trade with Europe. The importation by boat of cargoes of Chinese ceramics as well as many other productions from the 16th century had a considerable economic impact, but above all opened a window on two worlds. Europe then discovered China, and China Europe, via return shipments. These exchanges have also given rise to technological transfers and astonishing artistic creations on European soil. Although this collection constitutes the largest collection of Chinese porcelain that arrived so early in Europe, it is almost unknown to Chinese specialists and a fortiori to the general public, both Chinese and European.

Diaz, Rocio & Maria Antonia Pinto de Matos:, Chinese Armorial Porcelain for Spain
Diaz, Rocio & Maria Antonia Pinto de Matos:
Chinese Armorial Porcelain for Spain
2010, (24,7 x 30,5 cm), 416 pp., English text, 429 colour ills., hardcover.
¶ is the first book published on the subject of armorial porcelain made in China specifically for the Spanish market. It includes important new documentation and information unearthed after years of methodical research by the author. From the 16th century onwards, Spain was a dominant force in European trade from China. First through the Manila Galleons (Spanish trade ships that criss-crossed the Pacific Ocean sailing from Manila to Acapulco) and later through an eastern trade route that traversed the Indian and Atlantic oceans, Spanish traders imported large quantities of Chinese porcelain to Spain and New Spain. Much of these wares were armorial porcelain intended for Spanish Royal and aristocratic patrons. This publication examines and discusses seventy-three different Chinese export porcelain pieces or dinner services made for the Spanish market as well as provides interesting information on the historical, political and sociological world at the time including insights into the individuals that ordered these objects from China.

Doesschate Chu, Petra ten & Ning Ding:
Qing Encounters. Artistic Exchanges between China and the West.
2015, (18,1 x 25,4 cm), 318 pp.. English text, 108 ills. (62 colour), paperback.
¶ Qing Encounters: Artistic Exchanges between China and the West examines how the contact between China and Europe in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries transformed the arts on both sides of the East- West divide. The essays in the volume reveal the extent to which images, artifacts, and natural specimens were traded and copied, and how these materials inflected both cultures' visions of novelty and pleasure, battle and power, and ways of seeing and representing. Artists and craftspeople on both continents bor- rowed and adapted forms, techniques, and modes of representation, producing deliberate, meaningful, and complex new creations. By considering this reciprocity from both Eastern and Western perspectives, Qing Encounters offers a new and nuanced understanding of this critical period.

Imperial Porcelain from the Shanghai Museum.
2011, (23 x 29,5 cm), 144 pp. English text, 100 colour ills., paperback.
¶ Only the best was ever good enough for the court of imperial China. It had its own special factories using the highest quality porcelain, the most virtuoso craftsmen and the finest pigments to produce the crème de la crème of Chinese ceramics. Now, for the very first time, a hundred of these masterpieces from the collection of the Shanghai Museum are to be exhibited outside Asia. However, the forthcoming Sovereign Splendour exhibition at the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag will not present these magnificent examples of imperial porcelain in isolation: through a focus on the symbolism and significance of their decoration, it will also introduce the public to the fascinating myths and traditions of pre-revolutionary China.

Eliens, Titus M.:
Keizerlijk porselein uit het Shanghai Museum.
2011, (23 x 29,5 cm), 144 pp. Dutch text, 100 colour ills., paperback.
