HARRIS, NEIL; TERI J. EDELSTEIN; SARA PARETSKY (INTRO), Chicago Apartments: A Century and Beyond of Lakefront Luxury
HARRIS, NEIL; TERI J. EDELSTEIN; SARA PARETSKY (INTRO)
Chicago Apartments: A Century and Beyond of Lakefront Luxury
Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 2020. Second Edition. First Printing. Hard Cover. Signed by authors Neil Harris and Teri Edelstein on the Title Page. Publisher's full gray cloth, gilt lettering on spine, printed endpapers. Profusely illustrated with 350 photographs and plans. "The Chicago lakefront is one of America's urban wonders. The ribbon of high rise luxury apartment buildings along the Lake Michigan shore has few, if any, rivals nationwide for sustained architectural significance. This historic confluence of site, money, style, and development lies at the heart of the updated edition of Neil Harris's Chicago Apartments: A Century and Beyond of Lakefront Luxury. The book features more than 100 buildings, stretching from south to north and across more than a century, each with its own special combination of design choice, floor plans, and background story. Harris, with the assistance of Teri J. Edelstein, proves to be an affable and knowledgeable tour guide, guiding us through dozens of buildings, detailing a host of inimitable development histories, design choices, floor plans, and more along the way. Of particular note are recent structures on the Chicago River and south of the Loop that are proposing new definitions of comfort and extravagance. Featuring nearly 350 stunning images and a foreword by renowned Chicago author Sara Paretsky, this new edition of Chicago Apartments offers a wide-ranging look inside some of the Windy City's most magnificent abodes.". Both the volume and the unclipped dust jacket are in perfect, pristine condition; unread, unmarked, tight, square, and clean. A large, heavy book (6 pounds) - additional shipping charges may apply. HITCHCOCK, HENRY-RUSSELL, Architecture: Nineteenth & Twentieth Centuries
HITCHCOCK, HENRY-RUSSELL
Architecture: Nineteenth & Twentieth Centuries
NY: Penguin Books, 1958. First Printing. Hard Cover. Publisher's full red cloth, gilt lettering on spine, gilt medallion on cover. Profusely illustrated with 192 pages of glossy black & white plates, and 57 in-text drawings and plans. Includes bibliography and index. Henry-Russell Hitchcock (1903-1987) was a leading American architectural historian of his generation. A long-time professor at Smith College and New York University, he is best known for writings that helped to define Modern architecture. Over the course of Hitchock's career, he produced more than a dozen books on architecture. His "Architecture: Nineteenth and Twentieth Centuries" (1958) is an exhaustive study of more than 150 years of architecture that was widely used as a textbook in architectural history courses from the 1960s to the 1980s, and is still a useful reference today. The scope of this volume is international; it covers not only the countries of Europe but also North and South America and Australia, and considers the work of the most influential architects and movements. [It is] an attempt to bring out in each of the successive aspects of architectural production since 1800 its own intrinsic merits. In particular the chapters on commercial architecture and on the nineteenth-century Anglo-American house represent the first serious attempts to tell these notable stories consecutively. This is a large and heavy volume - additional shipping may apply. Former owner's name on fep, otherwise unmarked, tight, and square. The dust jacket, now in Mylar, is in tatters. VERY GOOD+/FAIR. The Pelican History of Art Series. Plates and Drawings. 4to 11" - 13" tall. xxix, 498 pp. Very Good+ in Fair dust jacket .
