New York: D. Appleton, 1856. First American edition. Pp. 388, (8, ads) + steel engraved frontispiece of Napoleon Bonaparte; pp. vi, 372, (12, ads); + steel engraved frontispiece of Joseph Bonaparte. Publisher's original purple cloth, lettered in gilt on the spines and ornately blind-stamped in circular patterned decorations on the front and rear covers, sm 8vo (7.75 x 5.25 inches). These two volumes contain a translation of all the Letters and Orders of Napoleon originally published in the memoirs of Joseph Bonaparte. No ownership marks and few signs of use. At the top of each title page, there is a former owner's signature that is dated 1856, the same year the set was published. The spine cloth of both volumes have been sunned which makes the spine titles difficult to read, there is also marginal sunning to the borders of the boards, the text is bright and clean with no signs of use, there is offsetting from the frontispiece plates on to the title pages; aside from the summing to the spines, this is a tight and clean copy in very good condition..
