Vol. 3: 367p. In vol. 2 the title is misbound after p.14, and pages 3-14 are re-margined at the fore-edge. Contemporary vellum; remains of ties; spine of vol. 2 repaired, covers of vol. 3 slightly sprung and a few quires loose. ***** The author, born at Alcalá de Henares in 1610 is known for his poetry, his lively and witty plays and for this important work of literary historiography. A model of Castilian prose, Solís's account of the conquest of Mexico (first published in 1684) covers a period of two years: from the journey of Juan de Grijalva in 1518 to the final surrender of Montezuma in 1520. Clean tear in E3 (repaired with transparent archival tape). 19th-century mottled calf, very slightly worn at edges; gold-tooled spine, with wear at head and foot of spine; marbled endpapers; red-edged leaves. Early shelfmarks in ink on front flyleaf and on half-title. ***** Solis is primarily remembered for his Historia de la conquista de México (1684), but he was also a a lively and witty dramatist and in addition he produced a large corpus of poetry, much of it in the style of Góngora, which was published posthumously in a collected edition in 1692 with the title Varias poésias, sagradas y profanas. Both covers marked and faded at edges. Very slight discolouration on a few pages. ***** Ventura de la Vega (1807-65) was born in Buenos Aires but left Argentina for Spain in 1818. In Madrid he became a pupil of the poet, Alberto Lista, and later taught literature to Isabella II, having made a reputation at an early age by translations of the Song of Songs (1825) and of the Psalms (1826). His plays reveal the influence of many dramatists, but in particular that of Leandro Fernández de Moratín. Palau 355171.
