There is a rough translation of this work on the internet. A Neat printing on laid paper THIS IS NOT A MODERN FACSIMILE.

A very full and successful life of the famous Dutch Admiral.

A few early pages have some pale foxing but otherwise all pages are clean and crisp. The text includes greek text as well as footnotes and some marginal printed references. A very handsome book.

Blackie and Co., Printers, Villafield. 1862 500 + engravings, colour maps. . Quarto, Volumes I and II of III, several maps with colour (including a fine one of Indian subcontinent); tissue guard on frontis; 10" tall; heavy wear to edges and spine. Decolouration on covers of both volumes, particular wear to edges of Vol I. Pagination excellent in both volumes however, despite some minor wear to edges. *Vol I and II chart the history of India from the first landings by European Merchants to the Indian Rebellion of 1857. Vol I ends with Clive of India's conquest of the subcontinent. Henry Beveridge was a prominent Scottish Calvinist who made a career translating the works of Calvin, he published this history of India without ever visiting. His son however was a notable figure in the Indian Civil Service, and his grandson was the prominent Liberal MP William Beveridge.

The doublepage titlepage and Burns' family register are Misbound as stated above and a few gatherings are slightly proud with 4 or 5 leaves a bit creased or crumpled but the text well printed and is indeed very tiny.

Payne. . 2 volumes half leather on 4 raised bands with gilt overall design to 6 compartments and 4 compartments with title & vol. number. Marbled boards to covers (edges worn), frontis + engraved title + printed title +[2]pp Preface +298pp; Vol 2 299-408pp + [4]pp index + "History of London Part I" 171pp +Part II 76pp. Three plates with creases and some fingering and signs of use and about half a dozen pages with some foxing. A few pages at beginning have marginal damp marks, and a few gatherings of text pages are uniformly tanned, but all pages well attached, and the paper supple. Quality of engravings very good and the plates are delightful: full of people, carriages etc depicting appearance of London vividly at that time.

Small octavo thin vellum with gilt title & date with gilt rules [all gilding rather hard to distinquish hinges worn with some vellum repairs/lower cover has a sm pink stain & spine a brown one] Titlepage + [5p=To reader & table of contents + first woodcut with summary here called "Argomento" above the woodcut and "Allegory" below. 1-400 leaves [last misnumbered 600] some other misnumberings but complete] Some browning,mainly to edges,some damp staining but nothing affecting legibility or the strength of the paper, There are some worm holes, usully single pin prick size, but two sections with some narrow worm tracks.A few pages have worm damage to the fore-edge-margin but never touching any print. In a few places the top margin is cut rather short but never actually encroaching on the running headlines.Bookplate of Douglas Strachan and ? Name to top margin of title. The woodcuts are about a third of the page in size and well printed with many lively scenes.

Front endpapers with MS calculation of investment returns from selling horse for £96 + more recent Leicestershire & Rutland County Library stamp. About 100 leaves, plain paper with double red-ruled margins, a few pages watermarked "C. ANSELL 1851" (paper as then used by India Office in London). Only ten leaves used by first 19th century owner for MS calculations, mostly based on numbered exercises from one of William Birkin's editions of the Tutor's Assistant by Francis Walkingame.
