Anonymous, illustrator probably Emily Eden (1797-1869)
FLOWERS FROM AN INDIAN GARDEN
Dusseldorf, Arnz & Co. 1846 Coloured lithograph plates (12) + titlepage within sepia printed floral wreath on buff background, from watercolous probably by Emily Eden (1797-1869). . Large folio (37.5 x 28cm) narrow red spine, buff paper-covered boards, front board with green/gilt title and floral ornamentation (some marks & remnants of varnish, gilt dulled, edges & corners bit worn, spine leather repaired with matching red cloth). All edges gilt, all pages printed one side only. Titlepage has at foot Prussian copyright treaty stamp (enclosing eagle and "vertrag von 13 mai 1846"), next leaf with coloured plants on right & left of text (printed in gold with caption "Help Us!" + 5 verses) + 11 fullpage colour printed & hand-finished plates of flowers, each with title at foot, giving Latin botanical & some Indian or English names (e.g. "Abutilon Striatum, Mahabuleshwur Forget-me-Not"). Final leaf printed in gilt has poem on Passion Flower (pictured on page opposite) and the Christ Child, with citations from Language of Flowers and Florists Magazine Vol.5. Lacks original front free endpaper (replaced), blank back of some pages and backgound of 2 final plates lightly browned, else remarkably clean and crisp throughout. *Beautiful and very rare illustrated botanical book with only 1 copy of this 1846 1st Series in UK libraries (Wellcome) + 2 abroad (Frankfurt & McMaster University Ontario). Attributed by Halkett & Laing to Anne Fulton Hope (1809-1887), but this is unlikely. The illustrator is almost certainly Emily Eden - an amateur painter, novellist & traveller, who accompanied her brother George, Lord Auckland, to India 1836-1842 when he was Governor-General (see citations with supporting evidence in Bulletin of the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation, Vol. 15 No. 1, Spring 2003. Reference courtesy of Florilegius JP, who offer the Dusseldorf 2nd Series (c.1860) of this fine botanical book.
