Anon, but attributed to Peter Walsh (1618?-1688)
THE ADVOCATE OF CONSCIENCE LIBERTY OR AN APOLOGY FOR TOLERATION RIGHTLY STATED shewing the Obligatory Injunctions and Precepts for Christian Peace and Charity.
[London acc. to Wing], Publisher not identified 1673 . Octavo (165x105mm) in darkened calf-covered boards, neatly repaired, with remnants of original spine leather, [viii]+310pp+[2]pp blank. Titlepage missing upper right corner but text not affected, staining to lower edge throughout but not affecting text. Ink ownership dated 1750/1 at top of titlepage, another ("Catherine Sponer") on verso of final blank. Fore-edge staining/soiling, mainly to beginning and end, expecially in bottom left hand corner, but not affecting readability. Corners rounded but with good margins throughout. *Peter Walsh was born in County Kildare. He was guardian of the Franciscan friary at Kilkenny 1648-1650, and then served as chaplain to Castlehaven’s army in Munster. All Catholic clergy captured by the Cromwellians were executed and Walsh, in danger of death, fled Ireland, eventually to London where he lived obscurely until the Restoration. Walsh remained a devout adherent of the Catholic Church, but kept friendly relations with the Anglicans. He wrote (1672-1684) a series of controversial letters against Pope Gregory VII's doctrine of papal supremacy, a History of the Remonstrance (1674) and various other works critical of his fellow Catholics. This book - very rare in its first edition as here - is usually attributed to him. It argues for tolerance between religious factions, calling for true liberty of conscience. It condemns persecution in relation to religion, arguing that Catholics have as much right to be tolerated as Recusants. As long as other faiths hold doctrines that are consistant with peace and government they should be allowed to follow their conscience. Such writings put Walsh at odds with the Catholic church, but before his death in 1688 may have influenced King James II`s 1687 declaration of indulgence (referenced by Wing W627).

Anon [attributed to Sir George Nayler], A COLLECTION OF COATS OF ARMS Borne by the Nobility and Gentry of the County of Glocester
Anon [attributed to Sir George Nayler]
A COLLECTION OF COATS OF ARMS Borne by the Nobility and Gentry of the County of Glocester
London, J. Good, 159 New Bond Street 1792 Copperplates (62) + Titlepage vignette (with coat of arms of Gloucester and its cathedral in background) in total 370 coats of arms engraved by Ames of Bristol. . Small folio linen spine with contemporary blue paper wraps. Engraved titlepage + 62 plates of coats of arms. Titlepage partly torn across and repaired on back and hinge strengthened, else a neat copy with only a little light freckling. There is no text or subscribers list in this version (the book was sold both with and without 49 pages of text which listed and briefly described the coats of arms pictured in the plates). The arms of Gloucestershire families are derived from Sir Robert Atkins' History (1712) and a few from Rudder's New History (1779). Printed 6 per page, they are alphabetical first from Atkyns up to plate 53 which has only 4 arms ending in "Yate". Then the alphabet begins again with A from Rudder but ends with "Cassey". A further volume was intended but the work was never completed. *Generally attributed to Sir George Nayler (born at Stroud), Garter King of Arms, but the Dict. Nat. Biog. xl.130 states that "it was in reality the work of one Ames, an engraver at Bristol".

Anon. [But the author was William Shippen 1673-1743]
FACTION DISPLAY'D a Poem from a corrected Copy.
London, H.Hills 1709 . Octavo 19th century disbound. 16pp. This issue with the the second line of imprint starting under the N of "and" in the first line of imprint. There is also an issue with the line starting under the R of "Printed" Initially attributed to Matthew Prior who denied he was the author it is also sometimes attributed to Daniel Defoe [1661 -1731] but it is in any case another of Hills' pirated editions from a first edition of 1704. It was Shippen's first publication and attracted much attention and was published in a pirated edition within days of the first edition of 1704. This second printing, also a counterfeit is squeezed into 16 pages instead of the 20 of the original in that th type font from the top of page 13 to the end on page 16 is noticeably smaller as is the line spacing. Anon [text], engravings after Franz Stöber [not named here]
DER MYTHOS ALTER DICHTER in sechzig bildlichen Darstellungen. Dritte umgeararbeitete Auflage.
Wien (Vienna), Mayer & Compagnie 3rd revised edition. 1841 Frontisplate + 59 other steel-engraved plates (lacking pl.50 Sisyphus) originally engraved on copper in 1815 by Franz Stöber (1795-1858). . Large octavo (24cm x 15.5cm) newer linen-spined boards with old paper relaid on covers and spine (has title but lacks original paper at spine head and foot). Unpaginated, but each numbered plate has tissue guard and facing leaf of text in German to explain each myth. Lacks plate 50 (maybe cut out by censor). Some foxing, and light marginal damp marks at gutter not touching engraved part of plates. *The steel-engraved images of gods, nymphs and heroes are quite small (9.5cm x 6.5cm), printed on strong paper at centre of each plate, but of very fine quality and detail. They are closely based on similarly numbered copperplate engravings by Franz Xaver Stöber, first published Vienna 1815 in similar large octavo format, but with completely different anonymous German text. The detail of these later steel engravings only differs from Stöber's original 1815 copperplates by covering up some female breasts, better to comply with 1840s more prudish moral code. They still retain the strongly erotic impression given by many of the originals, thus helping to maintain their popularity over more than 25 years.
