STEREOPHOTOS JEWISH QUARTER
Collection of 34 Stereophotos of the Old Jewish Quarter in Amsterdam (1930 ),
Amsterdam, 1930. Collection of 34 original stereophotos (3 D) on cards of the old Jewish quarter in Amsterdam.Taken by the Amsterdam municipal photographer Nico Swaager (1910 - 1983), who worked for the municipal Building and Housing Service from the late 1920's on. One of his tasks in the early 1930's was to produce a systematic photographic record of the streets in two Amsterdam areas: the old Jewish quarter, and the workingclass neighbourhood Jordaan. During that time the local government developped plans to tear down part of these quarters as a consequence of the deteriorating quality of the houses. The set of stereocards that is now for sale was part of the photographer's private collection. After his death is was discovered by his relatives and sold at an auction. The quality of the photos is excellent. Some of them offer a fascinating image of the poverty of the inhabitants, and several photos show striking examples of streetlife. The cards measure 12,3 x 5,9 cm and are in excellent condition, sharp and clear. There are a.o. photos of Waterlooplein, Jonas Daniël Meijerplein, Jodenbreestraat, Markenplein, Joden Houttuinen, Zwanenburgwal, Oude Schans, Nieuwe Uilenburgerstraat, Uilenburgersteeg, Markensteeg, Valkenburgerstraat, Lazarussteeg, Houtkopersburgwal, Foeliestraat, Rapenburg, Foeliedwarsstraat, Rapenburgerplein. and Foeliedwarsstraat. Several of these streets have been demolished and don't exist any more. (For more information contact us bij mail or phone).
