In March 1848, he discovered gold in Butte County, and today is known as the founder of Chico, California.

The lithograph shows the Monitor and the Merrimack firing at each other during their historically important battle of 9 March 1862, with other named ships [Cumberland -- Newport News -- Jamestown & Yorktown -- Congress -- Sewell's Point -- Minnesota] in the background, with the Cumberland sinking on the left [the first ship sunk by the Merrimack, i.e. CSS Virginia], the two having engaged the day prior. The printed leaf with pp [iii] - iv ["To the Reader"] bound in after p. 8, vice the title leaf. Contains forms for various business letters and legal documents (pp. 114 - 121). Contents page begins p. 122. 12mo. 6-5/8" x 4-1/4". General wear. Age-toning, and some offset to eps. Prior owner name stamp of Geo. R. Brush to t.p. First few gutters with darkened spots from the old stapling, the final two leaves at back have pulled away at the stapling. Rear board with vertical crack near rear joint. Withal, a VG copy. "To the Reader" prefatory material notes that the "..primary object of this Manual is to teach natives to converse in English. It is designed to help carry out the plan of the Government, to extend English schools among the indigenous race of these Islands. At the same time, the work is designed to assist strangers, speaking the English, to acquire the correct colloquial speech of the Hawaiians." Somewhat uncommon.. Adhesive with opaque paper remnants to verso, only faintly obscuring the text near the mask's string holes. Else only minor wear, clean and crisp. VG. Feisty political flyer from William E. Bittner's campaign for the Controller's office in the 1950 California elections, implicitly accusing the incumbent, Thomas Kuchel, of figuratively robbing the people while in office. Kuchel beat Bittner for the Controller seat, and later was appointed to fill Richard Nixon's Senate seat when, in 1952, the latter was elected Vice President.
