Octavo; pp; xx, 755, with index, 23; black cloth, spine lettered in gilt; Internally very good and complete with the addition of the Chandler "Suggestions" bound in at the rear; the binding is chipped and worn, the front joint is broken but holding, overall a fair copy externally but a good or better copy internally. This 1872 Congressional Investigation dealt with the irregularities in the running of the District. Sen Sumner also advocated for better treatment of the Negro in the District in terms of schooling. An important investigation and a look into the workings of DC in the post Civil War era and in the time of great corruption in the Grant Administration. This copy is bound with the related Chandler piece. Good + .
