Erenburg, Ilia
Fabrika Snov (the Dream Factory)
Berlin, Petropolis, 1931. First Edition. First edition in book form (initially appearing in three issues of the journal "Krasnaia nov" in the same year); 7 1/2 x 5 1/2; pp. [2], 5-243, [5]; beige wraps, printed in red, with an elaborate green border; closed cuts to tips of spine; two chips to fore-edge and lower corner; partially unopened; overall in very good- condition. Ilia Erenburg (1891-1967) was a writer, journalist, and translator, who left Russia after the Revolution and lived and worked in various European cities well into the 1940s. He was a prominent figure among the Russian dissident intellectuals, including Pasternak, Esenin, and Maiakovskii. During the Great Depression in the US, he wrote a series of novels that dealt with Capitalism and its workings, one of which was "The Dream Factory." Although presented as a documentary report, it was in fact a fictionalized, anti-Hollywood film industry novel. Although it carried a strong, anti-Capitalist bias, the book was not accepted by the the authorities, thus it was published in Berlin. Very good - .

Flagg, Josiah; et al.
A Small Collection of Manuscript Documents, from the Court of Josiah Flagg, Justice of the Peace of Rockingham County, New Hampshire
Chester, NH, By the author, 1785. Six manuscripts, 1785 - 1792; pp. [12] altogether; laid paper with text in brown ink; each document with a red wax seal to upper left margin; overall in very good condition, with only one leaf with closed splits to edges, otherwise the rest with mild spotting, foxing, and wear. All, but one of the documents were written by Flagg (and he was one of several signatories of the last) and addressed the Sheriff and the constables of Rockingham County, in regard to the apprehension of various miscreants for several offences, including a threat to "beat, wound, maim, or do some bodily harm" and refusals to repay money lent. Fowler, Deborah
Manuscript Inheritance Receipt of a Colonial Businesswoman
South Kingstown, Rhode Island, By the author, 1773. Manuscript document; 5 1/2 x 7; single sheet of laid paper, filled in brown ink; red wax seal to lower right corner (a bit dry and crumbly); old crease lines and a few minor spots; in very good condition. A receipt, written and signed by one Deborah Fowler, attesting to receiving forty five mild [sic.] dollars, "it being in full of a legasee which my Honoured Father gave unto mee it being for one Cow and twenty five Silver mild dollars which was Given me by will I say Received.." Interestingly enough, research has shown that Deborah and many other female citizens of the region did not conform to the women’s roles in the 18th and 19th centuries, which were centered around home and childrearing. In this case, most of their men were involved in maritime-related trades - off to sea, building sailing vessels, etc. - and as a matter of practicality, women, who had the desire, could take on societal responsibilities, which would not be normally tolerated in most communities in the country. After the onset of the Revolution, Deborah Fowler would open and operate a highly-successful bakery, which would be adjacent to a house, which she also single-handedly owned. There is little doubt where the initial investment for the business had come from. Very good .

G. & W. Endicott, Lithographer
National Birth-Night Ball. Under the Special Patronage of Mrs. Polk, Mrs. Madison, Mrs. Adams, Mrs. Hamilton. The Honor of [ ] Company Is Requested at Jackson Hall, on the Evening of the 22d February, 1848
S. l. s. n. 1848. Broadside; 12 1/4 x 7 1/2; illustrated with a lithographed half-portrait of George Washington at center, with the facsimile of his signature below; text in four columns; three old, horizontal fold lines with short, closed splits to edges; two small chips to right edge; a few minor spots of foxing, mostly to verso; overall in very good condition. Called one of the rarest George Washington portraits by bookseller, cataloger, auctioneer, and leading authority on Washingtoniana Stanislaus Vincent Henkels (1854 - 1926) and one of the first records of Congressman and future President Abraham Lincoln’s social life, the broadside presented an invitation to the National Birth-Night Ball of February 22, 1848, which was to be held under the patronage of four former- and current- First Ladies and 104 managers - representatives from various states. Due to tragic circumstances, namely former President John Quincy Adams' having a stroke on February 21 and his death two days later, the ball would be postponed until March 1, out of respect for Adams and his family. It has been said that for future President Abraham Lincoln (47th on the list of managers on the current invitation) and his wife - this appointment was likely "the first opportunity to enter the higher social life" of Washington, DC, as he had just taken his seat in the Thirtieth Congress of the United States and brought his family to the city in December of 1847. It has also been speculated that the main reason for his appointment to the event was that he was the only Whig congressman from Illinois. This invitation was addressed to one Mrs. Wheeler in faint pencil (unidentified). One copy recorded at the American Antiquarian Society; none other in the trade and none appearing at auction in the last hundred years. Very good .

He was also an educator and founder of the Mossy Creek Academy in the Shenandoah Valley. The maps showed the coal fields in hand-colored pink, the Kanawha River in blue, with all its major tributaries and creeks, the railroads in red, and vertical scales of coal deposits in black. Howe, Julia Ward; Savage, Minot J.; Beecher, Henry Ward; et al
City of Boston. Memorial Services in Honor of Ulysses S. Grant, at Tremont Temple, Thursday, October 22, 1885" Together with "a Ticket Stub from the Event
Boston, Rockwell and Churchill, Printers, 1885. First edition, large brochure; 10 3/4 x 8 1/4; pp. [4]; illustrated with an engraving of a stylized seal of Boston, curiously embelishing the original design with stacks of books around it and what-appears-to-be a magic lamp; two circular glue residue spots to upper margin of first page; old intersecting crease lines; in very good condition. Ticket stub, 1 1/4 x 3; ;ight-blue card stock, printed in black to recto; penciled-in manuscript note ("By Henry Ward Beecher..") and a small rubbed spot to verso; in very good condition. Tremont Temple's history dated back to 1839, when it was officially recognized as the First Free Baptist Church. It was co-founded by businessman, abolitionist, and president of the 1850 Boston Vigilance Committee Timothy Gilbert (1797 - 1865), who had been expelled from the New England Church in 1836 for inviting several African-Americans to join him in his pew. The church would be renamed Tremont Temple in 1843 and would become the first one in Boston to abolish pew rental fees. It would also become known as the "first integrated church in America," stating that "all who practice slavery or justify it shall be excluded from the church and its communion." It would quickly become tied to Boston's Underground Railroad and to the Suffrage Movement. It would also serve as a venue for public events and speeches, including Charles Dickens' first reading during his 1867–1868 tour of the United States. The current program, listing the order of exercises and printing several poems and songs in their entirety, was published in connection with the memorial services held at the temple and honoring Ulysses S. Grant. The event was organized by author, lecturer, abolitionist, and suffragist Julia Ward Howe (1819 - 1910), whose "Ode" was featured in the program; Unitarian minister, author, and ardent advocate of Darwinian Evolutionistic Optimism Minot Judson Savage (1841 - 1918); social reformer, abolitionist, brother of Harriet Beecher Stowe, and author Henry Ward Beecher (1813 - 1887); and others. OCLC lists one copy at Brown; none in the trade (as of January 2023). Very good .

Keller, Ellen (Keller, Helen); Sellivan, A. (Sullivan, Anne)
Istoriia Zhizni Ellen Keller. S Dopolneniiami Iz Pisem Eia Vospitatelnitsy Miss Sellivan (Life Story of Helen Keller. With Additions from Letters by Her Teacher Miss Sullivan)
Moskva, E. V. Malysheva, 1905. First Russian edition; octavo; pp. 147; printed, thick-paper wraps; illustrated with three portraits - one printed in-text, two more on unnumbered leaves of plates; wraps aged and slightly brittle around edges, with losses at spine ends and extremities; text paper well tanned at margins; in good to very good condition. An extremely-uncommon first Russian translation of Keller's The Story of My Life, published in 1905, the year of the first socialist revolution in Russia and, perhaps not coincidentally, the year that Keller first became affiliated with the Socialist Party of America. It also appears to be the first work devoted to Keller published in Russia. What makes it particularly valuable to research is that the translation is not attributed, but would appear to be an abridgment and a free adaptation, as the English-language version (1903) ran to more than 400 pages. No institutional holdings in OCLC or KVK, nor any mention of the publisher, E.V. Malysheva. If OCLC is to be believed, no complete Russian translation of Keller's autobiography appeared until 2003. Very good .

L. G. Quinlin & Co.
Grain, Cotton, and Provision Market Broadside
New York, L. G. Quinlin & Co. Grain, Provision, and Cotton Brokers, Representing Jno. T. Lester & Co. Chicago, 1882. Broadside, dated Saturday, January 21, 1882; 10 1/4 x 12 1/4; thin yellow stock, printed in black; a few tiny nicks to edges and several minor spots to lower margin; old crease lines; in very good condition. An uncommon survivor of American financial history, the broadside referenced the Chicago Board of Trade, the New York Produce Exchange, and the New York Cotton Exchange and listed the prices (opening, highest, lowest, closing) for wheat, corn, pork, lard, etc. on the Chicago Grain and Provision Market , for cotton on the New York Cotton Market, and even some data on foreign markets. By the late 19th century, Chicago and New York had had complex and multi-functional infrastructures developed to receive, process, and store grain, cotton, and livestock from manufacturers all throughout the United States and to ship them to Europe. There were also related financial exchanges, which offered various futures and liquid spots markets. Historically, cotton prices would reach an all-time low in the aftermath of the Civil War and would not recover until World War I. Very good .

Burke, Virginia, By the authors, 1986. Printed document; 14 x 8 1/2; single sheet, text to recto only; old crease line through the middle, else minor wear; in very good or better condition. Karl Linnas (1919 - 1987) was an Estonian-American, tried in absentia by the Soviet Government and sentenced to death in 1962 for allegedly serving as commandant of a Nazi concentration camp in Tartu in the early 1940s and for personally executing civilians, including small children. In the meantime, after WWII, he had spent time in Displaced Persons camps in Germany and had immigrated to the US in 1951, becoming a citizen in 1960. In 1979 he was charged by US immigration officials with providing false statements, in order to enter the US. In 1981, he was stripped of his US citizenship for having lied about his ties to the Nazis. In 1986, a federal appeals court upheld his deportation order and in April of that year, he was imprisoned, while awaiting the result of his final appeal. In 1987, he was flown to the Soviet Union, where he would die in a prison hospital in ST. Petersburg three months later. The current circular was created by his three daughters in August of 1986, while he was in prison awating deportation. It described a conspiracy between the Justice Department and the KGB to fabricate evidence and implored people to write to their senators in Karl's support and to contribute to their father's defense fund. Mann, Al Jr.
Aleksei Nicholaevich Romanoff, Rightful Heir to the All-Russian Imperial Throne Is One of America's Greatest Benefactors and Protectors
Los Angeles, Keep America Committee, 1975. First Edition. First separate publication, n. d. (1975); 10 1/4 x 8 1/2; pp. [4]; illustrated with a photographic image; two horizontal fold lines, with two small punctures along spine; age-toning to margins; a stamped note to last page; in about very good condition. Michael Goleniewski (1922 - 1993) was a Polish officer, Counter-intelligence Deputy Head in the Polish People's Army, Russian spy, and a triple-agent (revealing Polish and Russian secret documents to the CIA and eventually defecting to the US in 1961). His biggest claim to fame was his statement that he was Tsarevich Aleksei Nikolaevich Romanov, who had officially been murdered with his family, by the Bolsheviks in 1918. The current publication initially appeared in "The Truth Crusader, No. 52" journal and later in the "Double Eagle" monthly bulletin, the latter edited and issued by Michael Goleniewski. The entire leaflet was centered around Goleniewski's history of helping the US, his work for this country, the various scientific proofs that he was indeed Aleksei Romanov, etc. It was published by the Keep America Committee, a conservative, anti-Communist, women's organization in Los Angeles, which among other things, together with other similar groups, launched a concerted campaign against UNESCO, for allegedly spreading internationalist ideas, in line with Communist ideology. OCLC lists one copy at U of Kansas; none in the trade (as of February 2020). Very good .

Maynard, P. A.
Patriotism. A Manuscript CIVIC Education Essay
Concord, Mass. By the Author, 1833. Manuscript; 12 x 7 1/2; pp. [4]; brown ink on cream stock; old fold lines with a few minor punctures at intersecting folds; mild age-toning; very good condition. Penned in February of 1833 at the Concord Academy, the essay was written by a schoolmate of Henry David Thoreau, while the latter attended the school from 1828 until 1833. It poignantly began: All men are bound by a strong attachment to the place where they received their birth and education..It is common to all to the slave as well as the freeman, though perhaps in a less degree to the former, to have an ardent attachment to their native hills and valleys."It went on to declare: "..his actions (the patriot) may reach the ears of people bound down in slavery and prompt them to make an effort for liberty and to regain long lost rights, to drive their tyrants from the throne which they have so long held and from which they have sent forth the chains that bind the necks of the people with grievious and insupportable burdens, to establish a good government and free institutions and enjoy that freedom which is the natural right of man. Mrs. Parkhurst; [Words by] M.; [Melody by] T.
Sweet Evelina. Composed and Arranged for the Piano Forte, As Sung by All the Minstrel Bands
New York, S. T. Gordon & Son, 1863. Early edition (published in 1863 by at least three New York publishers - Horace Waters, H. De Marsan, and S. T. Gordon & Son); 14 x 10 1/2; pp. [4], numbered both [1], 3-5 to top margin and 150-153 to bottom margin; text of song in four four-line stanzas, each with two-line chorus; verses 2-4 printed as text on pp. 3; off-white wraps, engraved with an intricate border; thin, closed split along spine; scattered spots, mostly to margins; in good to very good condition. Writer and composer Susan McFarland Parkhurst, aka Mrs. E. A. Parkhurst (1836 - 1919) created her piano arrangement as a lovely, sentimental ballad of a lost love amongst the early American frontier. Presumably likening Evelina to their own girls they had left behind, the song would become immensly popular with soldiers during the Civil War. It was also, allegedly, the favorite song of Confederate General J. E. B. Stuart. In point of fact, after the Confederate victory at Bull Run in Virginia, a parody would be written to the music of Sweet Evelina, titled The Retreat of the Grand Army from Bull Run. Although becoming largely forgotten after the war, it would regain popularity again in the 1920s. Good .

Ostrander, Leroy Farrington
Fifty Years in Bulgaria. Jubilee Publication of the Collegiate and Theological Institute of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions, Samokov, Bulgaria
S. l. By the author, 1911. First Edition. First edition; 9 1/4 x 6; pp. [2], 5-63; speckled gray wraps, printed in black; illustrated with numerous photographs, tables, and a map; sun-fading to margins of wraps and a faint mark to lower right corner (removed bookshop label [?]); small closed cut to fore-edge of front wrap; in very good condition. Present day American College of Sofia, regarded as the oldest American educational institution outside of the US, began its life as a school for boys in Philippopolis (Plovdiv) in 1860, while Bulgaria was still under Turkish occupation. Funded by the American Mission Boards of the Congregational Church, it was established by missionaries led by Dr. James F. Clarke. Three years later, they also founded a school for girls in Eski Zagra (Stara Zagora). Both would be remebered as the first boarding schools in the country. The schools were moved to Samokov in 1871, where they prospered until 1926, when the Mission Boards decided to close them and leave Bulgaria, but met with great discontent and protests - both institutions were transferred to the Sofia American Schools Organization and continued operating in Simeonovo (a suburb of Sofia). After WWII, the program was shut down and the property of the college was confiscated by the Party and used as quarters for the State Police. The college reopened in 1992. The booklet, published in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the school by its longtime principal Leroy Ostrander, gave a brief history of the political and religious situation in Bulgaria and the influence of the American school to it students, described the campus and the classes taught, and so on. Very good .
