ALMANAC. BULLFIGHT.
Messager Boiteux Almanach historique  Contenant des Observations astronomiques sur chaque mois. Le cours du Soleil et de la Lune.... Pour l'An de Grace 1845... Par Antoine Souci.
A Vevey, Chez L'OErtscher et Files..., 1845. 4to, 208 x 168, pp. [64], title-page with woodcut red and black on fifth leaf, Le Veritable Messager Boiteux de Berne et Vevey on woodcut front cover (soiled), woodcut illustrations in text, 2 full-page woodcuts in text, folding engraved woodcut of "Combat de taureaux a Quito en Amerique," plate area measuring 280 x 160 mms., with French - Swiss exchange rates for five francs on verso, stitched as issued; lacks rear cover, edges worn and creased, but text clear and clean. This almanac is notable for being an exceedingly rare publication from the tiny township of Vevy in eastern France, and for including a very early depiction of bullfighting. The commune of Vevey had a population of only 398 residents in 1841, and a more recent census, conducted in 2013, recorded a population of merely 251 residents. The engraved title-page gives a variant title, Le Véritable Messager Boiteux de Berne et Vevey, which indicates that the coverage of the content includes Berne, the "de facto capital of Switzerland" (Wikipedia). Why a French-Swiss almanac would include an image of a bullfight in Quito, the capital city of Ecuador, in the first half of the nineteenth century, is not a question that I can answer. According to the title-page, the almanac includes astronomical observations keyed to each month, the cycles of both sun and moon, the principal fairs scheduled for Switzerland, Germany, and France, plus a series of narratives and anecdotes accompanied by illustrations. The title-page also assures the reader that he or she is in good hands as the author of the almanac, Antoine Souci, is both astronomer and historiographer. Wikepedia. Why a Swiss almanac would include an image of a bullfight in Ecquador is not a question I can answer. No copy of this 1845 edition in COPAC. The only copy I have located of this almanac in a library is the one at Harvard (catalogued under the engraved title, Le Véritable Messager Boiteux de Berne et Vevey, at Houghton shelfmark FC8.A100.845m).

ALMANAC. ABERDEEN.
The New Aberdeen Almanac and Northern Supplement to Oliver & Boyd's Edinburgh Almanac for 1838: Comprising Lists connected with the City of Aberdeen, and the Counties of Aberdeen, Banff, and Kincardine.
Aberdeen: Prepared and Published by Lewis Smith & Peter Gray..., [1836]. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 12mo (in 6s), 146 x 88 mms., pp. [ii], 144, 24, original printed green boards (rubbed and slightly soiled), red roan (rubbed and a little worn), but a good copy with the contemporary autograph "Wm Burnet Craigie/ Linton/ 1838" on the recto of the front free end-paper. The twenty-four pages at the end contain the publishers' announcement and adverts. This would appear to be their first venture at an Aberdeen almanac; "The Publishers of the New Aberdeen Almanac are not unaware of the fact that there is yet ample room in it for still farther improvement. But they beg their fellow-citizens to receive with indulgence this, the first attempt at improvement, where they conceived improvement was loudly called for." Uncommon: OCLC locates a copy in Aberdeen University Library.

JAMAICA ALMANACK.
The New Jamaica Almanack, and Register, Calculated to the Meridian of the Island, For the Year or our Lord 1802. (Being the Sixth after Bissextile, or Leap Year.
Kingston: Printed by Stevenson and Aikman, [1802] 12mo (in 6s), 149 x 92 mms. pp. [iv], 189 [190 - 191 continuation of Index, 192 note and errata, 193- 204 tables, followed by lower corner of one leaf, followed by 11 leaves of notes mostly in pencil, and mostly of names, with occasional sums and calculations, bound in contemporary wallet style sheepskin, with gilt borders on covers, and the name in purple ink of "William Bowyer/ Woollard/ 1887/ June 8," with more purple ink on the title-page and on the verso of the preceding leaf. One of the publishers, William Aikman fled from America during the 1776 Revolution and set up business with another refugee, David Douglass. Thomas Stevenson joined the firm in 1796. One of the most striking features of their almanacs was the use of Hebrew type, page 15 being a "Kalendar Of Months, Sabbaths, and Holidays, which the Hebrews or Jews observed and keep, for the years 5562 and 5563 of the Creation." Aikman and Douglass began incorporating details about Jewish worship from the beginning their partnership. Almost as striking is the number of Masonic lodges to be found in Jamaica, with 18 listed on page 178; the first Lodge was instituted in 1738. The most interesting feature of this almanac is, however, the large number of names recorded in pencil on the blank leaves at the end of the volume. "Mingo" was for example a common name given to slaves, as well as "Sambo," both of which appear in pencil on one of the leaves. The literature on slave names in the West Indies is vast, and an experienced scholar or genealogist would probably find much documentary detail about slaves in the West Indies in the early 19th century. Parliament abolished the slave trade in the British Empire in 1807 (slavery itself was not abolished until 1833). As for the provenance, I would assume that the 1887 ownership is that of a William Bowyer who lived in Woollard in the Chew Valley in England. However, Woollard also appears in England as a surname. The handwriting appears to be that of a juvenile. The William Bowyer(s) known to most booksellers are the two William Bowyers, father (1663 – 1737) and his son (1699 – 1777). A creative bookseller or scholar could doubtless find a connection between the 19th century owner of the 1802 Jamaica Almanack and the distinguished 18th century printers. The only copy that I have located is in the New York Historical Archives; this copy is described as "186, [12] pages, [1] folded leaf of plates : map ; imperfect: missing p. 5-8. Mss. notations throughout."
