A good copy of a very rare children's book about travelling. J. Brez: Middelburg 1771 - 1798; he was clergyman of the Waalsche Gemeente at Middelburg from 1796 until his death and the author of i.a. Flore des Insectophiles... (Utrecht, 1791) and Histoire des Vaudois. (Utrecht - Lausanne, 1796). Nagtglas page 79. Possibly J. Pittoni had a boarding-school at Bodegraven, early 19th century.

Later marbled wrapper, 14pp. Oblong: ca. 27,5 x 41 cm.Engraved title, engraved dedication and twelve engraved plates, in all fourteen plates with manuscriptual calligraphy in German (for the greater part) and French, signed by artist and engraver; some plates lovely decorated and illustrated. Plate 14 and 13 (?) are placed in front; probably three plates missing; small imperfections along extremities; discolouring in places; good copy. First edition of an attractive calligraphy manual by Brunner, who worked in Bern, but originated from Basel and dedicates the work to the youth of both cities. Brunner gives a detailed introduction to calligraphic writing, with information on different strokes, and complete alphabets of varying complexity. He is clearly concerned with practical writing styles, and the elegant arrangement of letters. The engraver was Carl Gottlieb Guttenberg (1743-1790). Despite the date on the title, at least one plate is in fact dated 1767. Berlin 4912; Bonacini 286; Doede 190; Becker 173.

According to Michaud in his Biographie universelle, Chaussard was "a writer who would perhaps have failed to make a lasting reputation if he had lived under other circumstances". In 1809 he was elected a correspondent, living abroad, of the Royal Institute of the Netherlands. Bookmark tipped-in; top of spine is missing a narrow piece; otherwise a good copy.
