Bolitho, Hector,, FINEST OF THE FEW - (originally published as COMBAT REPORT : The story of a Fighter Pilot).
Bolitho, Hector,
FINEST OF THE FEW - (originally published as COMBAT REPORT : The story of a Fighter Pilot).
Amberley, Stroud, ND (copyright 2010), 1st in imprint, 214pp, 79 half tone ills./facsimiles in text, [x] ads., black cloth lettered in gilt at spine, pictorial montage dustwrapper. Originally titled 'Combat Report', first published in 1943 and now re-issued with a new title and additional illustrations, the author met John Simpson as a fellow shipboard passenger in July 1934 en route from Australia to the UK and a friendship was born. The book is based mainly on the letters the author received from him although until WW2 he was also a frequent visitor to the author's home near the RAF base at Debden, north Essex, as were many RAF officers from that Station. He relates Simpson's career until June 1941, from joining the RAF in 1936 at the age of 23, his early flying training and posting to 43 Squadron at Tangmere flying the Hawker Fury, the carefree pre-war squadron life converting to Hurricanes in late 1938, the early battle experiences of WW2 from RAF Acklington and Wick in the north of England and his first crash in February 1940 (including an account by Peter Townsend of 43 Squadron action while Simpson was recuperating), his discovery in early May that with losses and postings he was now the oldest member of the Squadron (the Norwegian campaign from reports from others), his return to Tangmere in May 1940 in time to assist at Dunkirk, with little respite before the even heavier losses during the Battle of Britain, bailing out of a burning Hurricane in July 1940 he was further injured on landing, after recuperation taking command of 245 Squadron at Aldergrove, Northern Ireland, light bump lower edge lower board, near fine in a fine dustwrapper,
