A facsimile of the first edition published in 1904, "including twenty-six original paintings by Maxfield Parrish" - color and b&w - and a brief history of seventy-five villas and their gardens. The first edition was published with decorative stamping on the front cover, but without a dustjacket, which has been created for this facsimile and which is enclosed in a Brodart removable sleeve. "Elegantly written, informed by Wharton's intelligence and wit." Small "publisher's" bump at the bottom of the front joint Clean throughout; tight binding; as new. Fine/Fine.

With twenty-six illustrations by Maxfield Parrish and twenty-six photographs, described as follows: 14 tissue-guarded full-page full-color plates by Parrish, 12 tissue-guarded full-page b/w plates by Parrish, 19 tissue-guarded b/w photoplates, 7 b/w drawings in the text. Includes chapters on Florentine, Sienese, Roman, Genoese, and Lombard villas, as well as villas of Venetia and villas near Rome. VG-, somewhat loose and one signature slightly pulled. Covers and spine are moderately bright and clean, lightest wear to extremities, tips are sharp and barely worn through on front cover, top edge gilt. Some foxing spots to free endpapers and paste-downs, as well as frontis illustration and tissue guard. An overall nice copy of the scarer London edition.
