Torrey, J.
Plantae Fremontianae or descriptions of some new plants collected by Colonel J. C. Frémont, in California.
Washington, DC, Smithsonian Institution, 1853. 4to (31.7 x 24.0 cm). 24 pp.; ten mounted, lithographed platess. Later blue boards with printed label on the front board. = An important early contribution to the botany of the American West Coast by the American botanist John Torrey (1796-1873), based upon material collected by Colonel John Charles Frémont or Fremont (1813-1890). Frémont, as is spelled here, "...was an American explorer, politician, and soldier who, in 1856, became the first candidate of the Republican Party for the office of President of the United States. During the 1840s, when he led five expeditions into the American West, that era's penny press and admiring historians accorded Frémont the sobriquet The Pathfinder." (Wikipedia). Published in the Institute's Contributions to Knowledge. Plates shorter than the text leaves (as published) and reinforced with linen on versos. Very uncommon. Currently no other copies on the internet. A very good copy. Stafleu and Cowan, 14759.

Joseph Torrey, The Remains of the Rev. James Marsh
Joseph Torrey
The Remains of the Rev. James Marsh
Boston , Crocker and Brewster, 1843. Cloth. A first edition of this biography of an American philosopher, with an interesting provenance. Pencil signatures of the men who have owned the book, and typed description of its journey through the American civil war to the front pastedown. Blindstamp of B. Beadley, Binder, Robton to front free-endpaper. James Marsh (1794–1842) was an American philosopher and president of the University of Vermont from 1826-1833. Marsh was educated at Dartmouth College, graduating in 1817 from the college-in-exile in opposition to Dartmouth University, the state university that was set up in an attempt to destroy the Dartmouth College. He worked as a congregationalist minister and built a philosophy based on the works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge. As president of the University of Vermont Marsh instituted a program of a unified study where all seniors took a course in philosophy that sought to create a centralized model of knowledge. Joseph Torrey (1797–1867) was an American professor of philosophy at the University of Vermont and acting president of that university for five years. In a cloth binding. Externally worn, front board detached, water damage to rear board, backstrip missing. Internally, the textblock is split down the middle, held together by the cords, otherwise firmly bound. Internally, firmly bound. Bright but with marginal foxing and tidemarks. Fair . Ill.: None. Fair .
