James & Charles Taylor Backhouse, The Life and Labours of George Washington Walker
James & Charles Taylor Backhouse
The Life and Labours of George Washington Walker
London , A W Bennett, 1862. First edition. Cloth. A first edition of this biography of the Quaker missionary, written in part by his missionary partner James Backhouse. In his missionary works he undertook detailed investigations into the plight of aborigines and convicts. The Australian dictionary says of him and James Backhouse that, "As they visited from house to house or presented to large gatherings their version of a simple practical Christianity, they encouraged schools for the poor, temperance, cleanliness and care in hospitals, humane treatment of the insane, and generally tried to arouse a social conscience among the inhabitants of every colony.. "His Quaker grey and 'thees and thous' were outward labels of a nineteenth-century puritan, but he contributed to the community the enlightened leaven of a Dissenter, the care for humanity of an Evangelical, and the gentle methodical persuasion of a Quaker resolved to effect a change in a vicious brutal world." Rebound in cloth with gilt titles to the spine. Externally smart though with some bumping to the head and tail of the spine. Internally the first few original pages, including the frontispiece, are torn with minor loss. The contents of the frontispiece are unaffected. Internally, lightly age toned and cockled. Otherwise clean and firmly bound. Good . Ill.: None. Good .

Bancroft, Sarah, (and) Kelsey Corbett, (and) Alex Taylor, (and) James Rosenquist
James Rosenquist: Visualising the Sixties
London, Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac, 2019. Hardcover. A teal matte hardcover book with printed boards. The title is printed in light blue both across the front cover and down the spine. The headband is white and navy. The front and back free and pasted end pages are a black-and-white photograph. Pages: (5), 6-143, (1). Profusely illustrated with many full-color images and black and white photographs. There are also several foldout pages. The 1960s was a defining decade for James Rosenquist (1933-2017), one of the most revered and influential American artists of his generation. His paintings radically tested the possibilities of perception, of the image and of the painted medium itself, propelling him to the centre of art-world attention. At the forefront of his time and the nascent Pop art movement, he combined figurative painting techniques, collage and the use of found objects to convey the contradictions inherent to the American experience -- juxtaposing John F. Kennedy and the American Dream with images relating to the Vietnam War, mass consumerism, segregation and technological innovation. The first UK exhibition in over thirty years with an in-depth focus on this pivotal decade, 'James Rosenquist: Visualising the Sixties' will not only illuminate why the early years of the artist's career were so groundbreaking, but will also demonstrate the innovative and experimental techniques Rosenquist employed throughout the decade, pushing the boundaries of his medium in an era that redefined the field of painting. Exhibition: Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac - Ely House, London, UK (11.09-22.11.2019). VG+: A book in excellent condition. Clean pages and strong binding. Looks like it was rarely, if ever, taken from the shelf .
