(Sherman, Major-General William T.; Harriet Beecher Stowe)
Harper's Weekly (March 12, 1864)
New York, 1864. First Edition. 0 pp. Disbound. COMPLETE AND ORIGINAL ISSUE, NOT A REPRINT. A RARE HISTORICAL DOCUMENT. In remarkable condition--still bright and clean with no tears except to spine where disbound. Two pages do show fading and there is scattered, light foxing. Excellent cover illustration of Major-General William T. Sherman sitting on a camp chair in a field with a messenger at his side taking notes with his horse waiting in the background. Spectacular center-fold collage, "Story of the Sea, Incidents in the Life of a Sailor" which shows in exacting details 8 stirring scenes in the story of a wreck of a ship and the rescue of its sailors. Literary review (in one paragraph) of the "Life of Lynman Beecher," the father of Harriet Beecher Stowe. "The work though edited by Charles Beecher is really the joint production of serferal members of the family." Remarkable full-page illustration of "Escaping Union Officers Succored by Slavfes" with story. This page is one of two showing fading but the picture is still very clear and stark. The fading is uniform, and with all the ink in the drawing, is hardly noticeable. Also of note is a full-page "Map of the Campaign in East Tennessee, Mississippi, Georgia, Alabama, and Florida." Chps. 3 and 4 of "Quite Alone" by George Augustus Sala. Also, seven illustrations: portraits of Major-General Palmer and Brigadier-General W.S. Smith, "Bridge Across The Holston, at Knoxville, Tennesee" by C.H. Perring, "Sanderson Florida, Occupied by Our Advance Before the Battle of Olustee," "Scene of the Fight at the Plank Bridge over Big Creek, at Barber's, February 19, 1864," "Barber's House at the Ford on Big Creek, Colonel Barton's Headquarters," and "Wreck of the 'Bohemian' as Seen the Morning after She Sunk.". Very Good.

(Sherman, William T.)
"Sherman's March through Columbia, S.C." in Harper's Weekly (April 1, 1865}
New York, 1865. First Edition. 0 pp. Disbound. Complete and original issue. NOT A REPRINT BUT THE ORIGINAL, RARE DOCUMENT. Very good with moderate wear to spine where disbound and stray foxing, tiny knick to foredge of first two pages and .2" closed tear to foredge of another page. This issue has many illustrations and a cover story about General Wm Sherman's march through Columbia, S.C. The cover portrait shows "General Sherman's Entry into Columbia, South Carolina, February 17, 1865." Two entire pages are devoted to "Sherman's March through the Carolinas" with article and 11 illustrations of sites in Blackville, Hanging Rock, Rocky Hill, Chesterfield, Winnsborough, Fayetteville, and, of course, Columbia. The centerfold contains 6 drawings related to the ruination of Columbia, including a view from the State Capitol and a cityscape of the devestation the "morning after the fire." Sherman's "foragers" are shown in two illustrations on another page as well as Ft. Sumter (by Stanley Fox), "Long Dock at Hilton Head--Landing of Recruits from Charleston" (by Stanley Fox) and "Negro Recruits at Charleston." An editorial contrasts the nobility of Robert E. Lee with the "old politician," Jefferson Davis. Unrelated to the Civil War is an interesting editorial on the need for New York City to clean up its tenant-houses and streets with 500,000 people living in unsanitary tenent-houses and a death rate as high as 70 per 1000 yearly in some of them. Very Good.

(Agnew, Spiro; Hamar, Sherman C.). Butler, Richard (1918-2004). White supremacist founder of the Neo-Nazi Aryan Nations.
Rare 1964 White Supremacist "Christian Defense News" Racist & Anti-Semitic Broadside on Newspaper Stock. This Broadside, Accompanied by 2 Letters Signed by Sherman C. Hamar, Was Mailed to Spyro Agnew, Richard Nixon's Future Vice-President Who Was Then Running for the Office of Governor of Maryland.
Los Angeles, CA: Christian Defense League, 1964. 1964. - Folio, a 22-1/2 inches high by 16 inches wide broadside. The May 13, 1964 Volume One, Number One issue of the "Christian Defense News" broadside is printed on newspaper stock. Titled below the banner headline proclaiming "Extra! Extra!" the broadside consists of provocative articles and photographic illustrations under bold headings such as "'White Christians' Now a Minority Group,' says Editor", "Enemies of Christianity on the March", and "Bible Out Of Schools". Folded several times for mailing, else fine.

A 2-page mechanically reproduced letter signed by Sherman C. Hamar, typed on both sides of legal-sized 14 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide paper, is addressed "Dear Friend". Dated September 1966, the letter appears to be intended as a list of talking points for Republican candidates and lists 45 points drawn from the January 10, 1963 Congressional Record which the author views as demonstrating that the Communist party intends to take over the United States. He includes "Eliminate the House Committee on Un-American Activities" which, in conjunction with Joseph McCarthy's efforts in the Senate, had conducted witch hunts and was responsible for the Hollywood black list. Seven numbers are penned in blue ink at the top of the first page, no doubt in order to emphasize the corresponding points.

An additional 8-page mechanically-reproduced letter, printed on both sides of 4 sheets of legal-sized 14 inch high by 8-1/2 inch wide paper, bears the heading "A Republican Christian Congress in '66. Be Informed." Dated May, 1966 and signed by Sherman C. Hamar, the letter outlines strategies which the party should employ while subtly supporting anti-Communist, White Christian and White Supremacist values. "You can & must win" is penned in blue ink at the top of the first page. There are several paper clip stains to the top edges of the first and last pages.

The broadside and letters were mailed to Spiro Agnew who was then running for Governor of Maryland and includes an original postmarked mailing envelope.

PROVENANCE: From the estate of Vice President Spiro T. Agnew's Chief-of-Staff, Arthur J. Sohmer.

Spiro T. Agnew [1918-1996] was Governor of Maryland and Vice President of the United States under Nixon. He was indicted for tax fraud and forced to resign.

The American white supremacist Richard Butler (1918-2004) dedicated himself to the Christian Identity movement and founded the Neo-Nazi group Aryan Nations in the 1970s. After studying aeronautical engineering and science, Butler was sent to India by his company to work on aircrafts for the Royal Indian Air Force. Some assert that his experience with the caste system influenced his later beliefs. Though he joined the Army Air Corps at the start of the Second World War, Butler never saw action. He became increasingly Anti-Semetic and Anti-Communist during that period. Influenced by William Porter Gale and also the Klansman and pastor of the Anglo-Saxon Christian Congregation Wesley Swift, Butler joined the Christian Identity movement. In the 1960's Butler was involved with the California Rangers, the paramilitary arm of the Christian Defense League and, in 1970, took over from Henry Beach as the leader of Posse Comitatus. Purchasing a large piece of land at Hayden Lake, Idaho, Butler founded the Aryan Nations group as a political wing of the racist white supremacist Church of Jesus Christ Christian. Fine .
