London, Henry Bohn, 1846. Leather. An historical work on the court of Charles the Second. Lacking title page and frontispiece. This work is Bohn's 'Extra Volume' as the publisher doubted 'the propriety of including Count Grammont's Memoirs in his 'standard library'&apos. This is because the work, despite being praised as 'a classic work, the delight of every man and woman of taste', is full of 'curious historical information&apos. To the leaf on the verso of the half-title, Bohn questions if this work meets up to the standard of other works in his library series which is why it is published as an 'extra volume&apos. This work was originally claimed by Antoine Hamilton to have been dictated to him by Philibert, Count de Gramont, however it is likely that Hamilton was the true author. Gramont was the protagonist of these memoirs. This particular edition is edited by Sir Walter Scott. This work made Hamilton one of the classical writers of France. In a half vellum binding with cloth covered boards. Externally, rubbed to the joints and t o the extremities. Handling marks and a few small tidemarks to the spine. Vellum has dulled. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown, R B Colvin. First three leaves are loosening. Rear hinge is strained but firm. Final two leaves are loosening to the tail of pages. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned. Scattered spotting to pages. Good . Ill.: None. Good .

Limited edition, number 159 of 780 copies printed for England and America. Written by his brother-in-law Antoine Hamilton. Count de Gramont was the younger half-brother of Antoine III of Gramont and uncle of Catherine Charlotte de Gramont, Princess of Monaco. Illustrated with thirty four etchings on India paper by C Delort. This biography was first published in 1713 after being composed between 1704 and 1710. It has been said that some of the work was written at Gramont's dictation. This work made Hamilton one of the classical writers of France. This edition has been edited with notes by Sir Walter Scott. In original cloth binding with gilt stamping to spine and front board. Externally, generally smart with small areas of bumping to the extremities and to the head and tail of spine. Small patches of slight rubbing to the joints and to the head and tail of spine. Front hinge is slightly strained but firm. Bookplate of one Lily E X Routhe by E M Blake to the front pastedown. This work is illustrated by thirty-four etchings on India paper by C Delort. The biography of Count Grammont was first published in 1731 after its composition between 1704 and 1710.
