Cochin, one engraved vignette and 18 engraved plates (17 folding) by Sebastien Le Clerc depicting Turkish costumes. Contemporary calf, flat spine richly gilt, rubbed and hinges weak, spine ends chipped. The second French edition of this important work on the Ottoman Empire mainly based on Rycaut's personal experiences. Amsterdam, Abraham Wolfgank, 1670, in 12 de 498-(6) pp. joli titre-frontispice gravé, et 19 planches gravées dont 18 sont dépliantes et hors-texte, rel. d'ép. de plein velin ivoire à rabats, dos lisse avec titre ancien manuscrit à l'encre brune, 2 planches restaurées ont conservé des traces de ruban adhésif, sinon bon ex. Édition de la même année que l'originale in 4, de la traduction française par Pierre Briot, qui fut considérée comme la plus exacte. Cette histoire de l'état présent de l'Empire ottoman publiée pour la 1re fois en anglais en 1668 fut le premier ouvrage à bien faire connaître les mÏurs des Turcs, ainsi que les ressources et la politique de cet Empire. Il fut traduit dans presque toutes les langues de l'Europe et continua, malgré les nouvelles informations qui furent recueillies par la suite sur la Porte, d'être lu avec intérêt. Il passe même pour l'une des sources pour les "Lettres persanes" de Montesquieu, qui en possédait un exemplaire dans sa bibliothèque.

Leather title label on smooth spine. Vellum slightly soiled, some pages with some minor stains but on the whole a fine/good copy. Rycaut ( London 1629 - Hamburg 1700) wrote this study on the Greek and Armenian Churches at the command of king Charles II; as stated in the title of the first - English - edition ( London, John Starkey 1679). The Middelburg edition is the first French translation . The author , being in diplomatic service at Constantinopel and Smyrna, was one of the first in Western Europe to describe and understand the difficulties of the Greek Church at that time nearly being crushed between Turkish and Catholic beliefs. .

VG, some wear to covers, markings on front pastedown and flyleaves, otherwise remarkably clean and tight considering age .

(8), 607, (9) pp.First edition; with armorial bookplate of Earl of Rosebery. - This is Rycaut's continuation of his history of Turkey, the first part of which was printed in 1680 as The history of the Turkish Empire from 1623-1677. It forms the third volume of the first collected edition of Rycaut's histories and his edition of Knolles' history of the Turks. The plates include portraits of Rycaut, of Mehmet IV, Count Tököly, Soliman, Achmat, and Muustapha (Atabey p. 577). A one-volume supplement covering the period 1679-1699 in great detail (Blackmer p.310). Paul Rycaut (ca. 1630-1700) was a diplomat and Middle Eastern scholar. In 1661 he was appointed secretary to the Earl of Winchelsea, who became ambassador to the Ottoman court at Constantinople. Rycaut accompanied his employer to Turkey and remained there for eight years, during which he acquainted himself with the manners, customs, and religion of the Turks (Howgego p.919). - A fine copy written by an authority on the Ottoman Empire.Blackmer Collection 1466; Atabey Collection 1077; Apponyi 2100 (French ed.).
