First published in 1723, the Causes of the Greatness of the Romans and Their Decline begins with the founding of Rome in 753 BC, and continues until the Fall of Constantinople in AD 1453. Montesquieu's study later inspired Edward Gibbon's more extensive work, The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. Montesquieu was a French judge, historian, and political philosopher whose anonymously published The Spirit of Law influenced the Founding Fathers of the United States. Montesquieu was also the principal source of the theory of separation of powers, in which the those making, enforcing, and adjudicating the law are split into separate branches.
