FUKASE, Masahisa
Masahisa Fukase - Private Scenes - [Japanese].
Kyoto, AKAAKA Art Publishing, 2023. 19.5 x 24.5 cm. [192] pp. Hardcover. Illustrated in b/w and colour throughout. - Text in Japanese - 'Private Scenes' presents the entire eponymous series for the first time, revealing a new dimension in the work of Masahisa Fukase (1934-2012) - the artist struggling with his medium. The series is made up of photographs in which the artist inserts himself, comprising two sets: 'Letters from Journeys', with images taken in 1989 in various cities around the world, and 'Private Scenes ?92', which focuses on his daily life in Tokyo. In the latter, each print is now enhanced with colour paints, becoming a unique work. It bears witness to Fukase's questions about his own practice at the end of his life and the place of the photographer in his work, when subject and object overlap. - New copy

FUKASE, Masahisa
Masahisa Fukase 1961-1991 Retrospective. [Second edition] - [New].
Kyoto, AKAAKA Art Publishing, 2023. 22.5 x 15 cm. 208 pp. Clothbound. lllustrated in b/w. - Text in English and Japanese - Photographer Masahisa Fukase (1934-2012) carved out a unique place in the history of Japanese photography in the 1960s by focusing on his personal life. He pointed his camera at those in his immediate surroundings: his wife, Yoko, his extended family, his cat. Yet, while exposing his own life through a loving gaze and carefree sense of humour, he simultaneously set about exploring the madness deep within himself. Fukase's career was tragically cut short when he suffered a fall in 1992, subsequently suffering severe memory impairment and aphasia. He never took another photograph. This retrospective collection offers an intimate tribute to his entire oeuvre. - New copy
